1972 Superbeetle, great restored running condition.  Needs very little work for a complete restoration. If your are serious, please read on.... All rust on body, pan, wheel wells was professionally repaired by very reputable local VW shop including replacement of battery tray and front lower frame head.  Very presentable older (5+ years) exterior paint (original red paint in interior and trunk), a few nicks and dings typical of a 40+ year old car that can be driven anywhere, but a real head turner standing 5-feet back or driving down the road.  Strong 1600 Dual Port engine has no end play on main shaft.  Good clutch and transaxle, car shifts very smooth in all gears. Transmission side and main seals replaced.  Good CVC joints.  New Solex carb, new correct distributor, new fuel pump, new exhaust system, new hoses and lines and engine wiring.  Rebuilt starter, recent battery.  Solid working heater boxes and channels, heat works perfect.  All correct engine tin is in place with new engine bay seal and the thermostat and flappers work perfect, this car runs cool even after 100 miles on a hot summer day.  All air ducts replaced, vents, cables and levers fully functional, even the defrosters work.  Two-speed fan fresh air motor rebuilt and works as it should, wiper motor rebuilt and works, washer converted to electric pump.  All NEW BRAKES just done including brand new drums all around, lines where needed and new front wheel bearings.  Master and wheel cylinders all checked and in good non-leaking working order.  New parking brake cables installed, handle rebuilt.  New urethane front bushings and steering damper. New rear shocks, good non-leaking front struts.  Tires on car have less than 3000 miles, comes with two extra new, unused tires, one mounted on extra rim and a brand new mounted spare tire in trunk, three extra tires in all.  Gas tank fully cleaned and all lines and seals replaced, new sending unit installed, gas gauge works perfect.  Car has NO gas smell inside or in garage, white plastic evaporator tank is intact and re-vented below car (sorry, the charcoal canister is long gone!)  New TMI seat re-upholstery kit, front and rear.  New 3-point shoulder belts and new rear lap belts. Nice original carpet and new mat set. Replaced interior door and rear side panels.  Custom orange shift ball.  New Dual stereo radio with SD, USB and Aux inputs, mp3 player/Pandora radio from your phone ready!  Four new speakers with new kick panel baffles in front. New antenna too. Car comes with original working rebuilt Sapphire AM-FM radio and a new 5" in dash speaker if new owner desires to switch it back to original.  Original working VDO optional clock!  All lights on dash pod work as they should. New glove box liner.  All wiring has been gone over and every thing works including back-up lights and dome light.  New tail and parking light lenses and a new beep beep horn!  Underdash Aux charging jack also added.  Body has many new gaskets and all new fender bead installed.  Car is fully undercoated.  Good original door seals.  All locks work, 3 sets of keys included.  New trunk latch and cable plus custom emergency override cable installed in wheel well. Good trunk liner and nice custom carpet.  Fresh chrome bumpers with NOS bumper guard strips, new dual mirrors and chrome hood trim, nice original side moldings.  Nice new rear mudflaps and rare dealer aux rear reflectors!  Car also comes with shop manuals and some spare parts, trim rings, see photo.  Now for what I prefer to call projects for the next owner, not negatives. The engine does have some typical VW oil leaks, mostly from the push rod tube seals from what I can tell.  There is also some white smoke at start up after sitting awhile indicating some valve stem seepage.  Again, I leave it to the next owner to have a shop or him/her to do it yourself to overhaul the engine at some point with a new gasket and seal set.  (if you know these cars, then you know it will probably leak again within months of rebuilding it, just the way they are!)  The only other thing it may need is the original headliner has a few tears, stains and patches and the dash has a few caulked up cracks, part of the patina of a vintage car.  These items are replaceable but up to the new owner to decide if they want to go that far. Present odometer reads 80,XXX, not sure if this is original, could be based on body condition, but may have turned over once, I do not feel this is an issue with so much repaired or replaced.  Overall the car has had a lot of TLC, time and money invested over the past 4 years, as much or more than the asking price.  Buyer to arrange all transportation of the vehicle.  Willing to deliver within reasonable distance and then remove my plates.  (Call first to discuss)  $500 Paypal deposit required at end of sale. Balance by cash or certified bank check at delivery. This is a great running 99% RUST FREE East Coast Superbeetle ready for years of driving enjoyment with all the major work already done.  You will find very few cars with as much done to them and everything working on them as this one at this price.  This is a vintage car being sold as-is with no warranty of any kind but has been fully described herein.  The car is located in Central New Jersey, about 20 miles from New York City.  Test drives and inspections are welcome.  Feel free to send any questions or call 908-447-1621 and ask for Jeff.

Recharge Wrap-up: VW exec predicts EVs with 375-mile range

Wed, Oct 8 2014

Volkswagen says EV ranges over 300 miles aren't too far in the future. Plug-in hybrids are merely a bridge to all-electric mobility becoming more practical for people who need to travel longer distances, according to Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen's head of powertrain development. Energy density is increasing rapidly in new batteries. Speaking about the e-Golf, Neusser says, "I expect the next generation in 2015-17 will increase to around 300 km [186 miles] and the following step will be around 500-600 km [310-372 miles]." Neusser also says he believes that charging infrastructure will improve to catch up with these more advanced batteries. Read more at Motoring. BMW is offering higher incentives for the all-electric i3 than the range-extended version. More buyers are opting for the i3 REx, with its 78 extra miles of range. So, to move the standard i3 (which is already cheaper), BMW is offering $2,000 in incentives for October - double what is offered for the i3 REx. The added incentives help close the price gap between the BMW and other EVs with similar ranges. The deals won't last long, though. According to New Jersey BMW salesman Manny Antunes, BMW's current incentives are "as aggressive as they're going to get" for a while. Read more at Green Car Reports. Honda is changing its research and development process for all cars after a series of Fit Hybrid recalls. The hybrid version, which makes up more than half of all Fit sales in Japan, was the subject of four recalls within nine months. In response, Honda will change the way it develops cars worldwide, with one extra "gate" to pass in the process. Honda will do prototype testing earlier in the research process to see how separately developed components work together before moving onto the car's development phase. It will add time and cost to making cars, but Honda hopes it will help prevent problems - like those that come with a flurry of recalls - down the road. Read more at Automotive News. A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon leaked ahead of official unveiling

Sat, 02 Mar 2013

Wagons ho! These three images of the upcoming Volkswagen Golf Wagon have leaked online ahead of the car's official debut, which may very well be at the Geneva Motor Show. Looking over the photos doesn't really bring any surprises - after all, this is a VW Golf with a wagon rear end grafted on, or basically what we expect next Jetta SportWagen will be.
We can only share these three images at this time, but fret not, folks. There's little doubt that all the details and images will be flowing from Volkswagen in short order. In the meantime, click on the images above to view them in high resolution.
