Recharge Wrap-up: Arcimoto SRK video, BAIC EV at CES

Kelley Blue Book took a spin in the Arcimoto SRK three-wheeled EV at CES in Las Vegas. In the video above, KBB Managing Editor Micah Muzio gets behind the handlebars for a spin around an empty parking lot. He notes a gradual throttle tip-in, though from the video, it appears the trike has a bit of pep. While the hydraulic brake pedal requires a bit of extra effort, the regenerative brake lever located on the right handlebar is effective and easy to use. The steering is a little heavy, but manageable, at low speeds. He calls it "kind of a fun little conveyance," adding, "Maybe this is the future." See the full review in the video above. CARB Chairman Mary Nichols spoke with German television about Volkswagen's emissions scandal. In a photo she posted on Twitter, Nichols can be seen in front of cameras with CARB's test bay in the background. In the bay is a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. She says in her tweet, "Discussing VW cheating case w/German TV in front of ARB lab test bay & '07 diesel Jetta. Time to move on to #EVs!" Late last year, a group of environmentalists and Silicon Valley leaders – Elon Musk included – sent Nichols an open letter suggesting CARB help urge Volkswagen to give up on diesels and focus on electric vehicles. See Nichols's post on Twitter. South Korea's most popular EV is the Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) SM3 ZE (also known as the Renault Fluence ZE). The all-electric vehicle has sold 1,767 units since its arrival in Korea since November 2013, with 2015 sales reaching 1,043 units. This makes one in three EVs in Korea a RSM SM3 ZE. The car has been selected as Korea's official government vehicle, and RSM has supplied over 100 EV taxis, 60 of which are in Seoul. Read more in the press release from Renault. BAIC EV announced it has established an R&D center in Detroit at CES. It will work with its other centers in Silicon Valley and Aachen, Germany in order to develop automotive technology and evaluate global demand. The EV branch of the Chinese automaker also debuted its i-Link information system, which uses 4G to connect car telematics to the cloud. The i-Link system also provides wireless phone charging, remote inquiry services and connects sensing technologies to the internet. Read more in the press release below.

EPA finally approves sales of 2017 BMW diesels

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the sale of 2017 BMW diesel vehicles in the US, reports Automotive News. According to Chris Grundler, head of the EPA's Office of Air Quality and Transportation, the vehicles were delayed due to rigorous testing. Following the Volkswagen diesel scandal, the EPA stated that it would review all diesels headed to the US. Last month, the EPA delayed sales of BMW's 2017-model-year diesels due to testing logistics, claimed BMW. Now that the vehicles have been approved, production of the models should begin shortly. While BMW's diesels have been cleared, the report indicates that Mercedes-Benz's 2017 diesel models are still undergoing further testing. "Discussions continue," Grundler stated, but he declined to point to any specifics on why the EPA has not approved those diesel models. Amid the numerous lawsuits against VW, Mercedes has also been involved in suits that claim its diesels use defeat devices, although no major proof has surfaced. Earlier this year, Mercedes confirmed that the US Justice Department, EPA, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), were investigating its diesel models. The 2016 diesel models from VW haven't been approved for sale yet, and the automaker has not asked for permission from the EPA to sell 2017 diesel models, claims Grundler. At this point in the year, it's not likely VW will sell any 2016 diesels. Last year, BMW's diesels accounted for about four percent of the company's total US sales, so the delay is not likely to have a drastic affect on its bottom line. VW GTI Clubsport Concept celebrates model's 40th birthday with 261 hp

Volkswagen is celebrating the four-decade milestone for the GTI with the world debut of the GTI Clubsport concept at the annual Worthersee festival in Austria. While the version in these sketches is just a prototype, European buyers at least are set to get a production model in early 2016. The Clubsport is essentially a way for VW to split the difference between the already well-liked GTI and the hotter Golf R. In concept form, it packs 261 horsepower, compared to 220 hp from the standard version in the US with the Performance Package or 292 hp from the R. A temporary overboost function even lets the Clubsport make about 10 percent more power for short periods. Beyond just the mechanical upgrades, the concept in these sketches also wears a revised lower air dam at the front with a mesh grille and big strakes at the corners, and there's a new roof spoiler and rear diffuser at the back. VW also promises a more "individualized" interior. Unfortunately, the North America might not be getting this more powerful GTI. "There are no plans to bring the car to the US currently," VW spokesperson Mark Gillies told Autoblog.
