1967 VW Baja

Purchased last week to turn into my daily driver.

Landlord is unhappy with my collection of non-running vehicles.  As this is the one I've put the least amount of sweat and blood and time into, I'm willing to list it for sale.  The 78 Chevy pickup from New Mexico already has a lot of my sweat in it, so I'd prefer to keep it.

I literally only know what the previous owner told me, and what I've witnessed with my own eyes.  I work a lot so I don't have time to mess with this.  Previous owner added an auxillary fuel tank and powered it with a tiny 12v fuel pump.  He said the fuel tank lines were clogged, and it was easier for him to add the spare tank than to mess with removing the original and lines.  Since he only used it for fun, goofin' around on his land, a small tank on the back was all he ever needed.  Says the small tank on back would prolly run it for a coupla hours.  Brake pedal goes to the floor, so it'll need a master cylinder at least.

This is an older Baja creation, with older (worn out) interior, but the pans are solid (save for under the battery tray) and the body is solid.  There's some rust-through where the side step rails used to be, but not so bad that it's structurally worrying.  It can be covered up by new side rails and stay like that forever, unless you're gonna take it up north and run it in the salty winters up there.  Previous owner drove it around last month and didn't have any problems with it getting around on his property...said he was actually impressed with the ride.  When I towed it home, it tracked straight and true, without any bad bumping or wagging, so it looks to me like it's in overall good shape, just needs some cleaning up and it can be put back on the road as a street legal daily driver here in Texas. This was my original intention, but the landlord is unhappy.

This is a project....will need brakes, battery, tune up, oil looks good (isn't dirty, isn't gas fouled), will need little things like the rear brake lights affixed more securely, better wiper blades, the basic stuff like that.

This lil Bug has got a lotta things that other projects don't have.  The interior is in bad need up updating, but it's VERY solid...the dash is in one piece, nothing is TORN up to pieces, all the metal is still in great shape.  The glove box is even in GREAT shape...for old cardboard that's really impressive ;-)  There's no animal nests inside, there's no front end body damage (isn't that how most Baja's are created anyway?), no bondo anywhere that I can find.  This lil bug has heart...it just needs some lovin to get back on the road!

I did get a chance to throw some jumper cables directly to the battery cables off my truck and the lil engine will spin over easily...in fact it's one of the better sounding v-dubs I've owned, which makes me not really want to get rid of it.  This auction is a test to see if the general public thinks this car, as-is, is worth enough dough to talk me out of it.  If someone wants it bad enough, it'll save me from having to pay for storage while I finish my 78 pickup...any dough I spend on storage will only slow my progress with the old Chevy anyway.  So...best of luck with the auction, bid early and bid often. ;-)

PS - clear Texas title, and I can deliver for one dollar per loaded mile from Canton, TX to your location, paid in advance via Paypal only (NO EXCEPTIONS).  The tires hold air well enough to tow, but it looks like they go down after a week, I'll throw some fix-a-flat in em before I start towing to you, that way if that'll fix it, it'll be fixed by the time the Bug gets to you.

Any questions...DO NOT ASSUME...please come check out this bug in person!  I will *try* to answer questions...but do not give me a hard time if it takes me a day or two to respond.  THANKS for reading!! :-)

Recharge Wrap-Up: Tesla, CarCharging and the EPA

Sat, Aug 23 2014

Credit Suisse analysts are bullish on Tesla. The group gives the electric car company's stock an "outperform" rating with a target price of $325. For its continued success, Credit Suisse cites the vehicles' superior technology, in turn offering more torque, roominess and reliability. Says analyst Dan Galves said of Tesla's competition with ICEs, "If Tesla can get to cost-parity with Internal Combustion vehicles and still offer $1,400 to $2,500 per year fuel savings to the consumer, it won't be a fair fight." Read more at Yahoo Finance or at Business Insider. In other Tesla news, Tesla Model S owners will be able to unlock and start their car using an iPhone. The Tesla app is adding this functionality soon, perhaps with the update to iOS 8. It's not yet clear how this function will work, but it's one more innovative convenience feature that Model S owners can enjoy. That means drivers will have less to carry in their pockets or purses when they go for a drive. Read more at 9 to 5 Mac. CarCharging Group has remotely lowered the amperage on some of its residential users' Blink charging stations to 24 amps. This will slow down the charging time for affected customers with 6.6-kilowatt charging by about 15 percent. The company cited safety reasons for the move, with concerns about overheating. The amperage reduction is temporary, until CarCharging is able to provide replacement parts for the chargers. Some are concerned about the delayed action, as well as the fact that the reduction was handled without owner permission. Read more at Plugin Cars. Ford is halting test drives and sales of certain C-Max hybrid and Focus models due to a safety concern. Cars made during a single week this month at a Michigan factory may not have enough ball bearings in the steering gear assembly, which could lead to loss of control. None of the affected cars have been sold, Ford says, and about 50 units are currently at dealerships. Just over 600 will need to be recalled. Dealerships have been notified of the problem. Read more at Reuters and the The Detroit News. A new EPA report shows that urban air in the US is becoming less toxic since the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The report shows a 66-percent reduction in benzene, almost 60 percent reduction in mercury from man-made sources, 84 percent less lead and more.

VW GTI Clubsport Concept celebrates model's 40th birthday with 261 hp

Sat, May 9 2015

Volkswagen is celebrating the four-decade milestone for the GTI with the world debut of the GTI Clubsport concept at the annual Worthersee festival in Austria. While the version in these sketches is just a prototype, European buyers at least are set to get a production model in early 2016. The Clubsport is essentially a way for VW to split the difference between the already well-liked GTI and the hotter Golf R. In concept form, it packs 261 horsepower, compared to 220 hp from the standard version in the US with the Performance Package or 292 hp from the R. A temporary overboost function even lets the Clubsport make about 10 percent more power for short periods. Beyond just the mechanical upgrades, the concept in these sketches also wears a revised lower air dam at the front with a mesh grille and big strakes at the corners, and there's a new roof spoiler and rear diffuser at the back. VW also promises a more "individualized" interior. Unfortunately, the North America might not be getting this more powerful GTI. "There are no plans to bring the car to the US currently," VW spokesperson Mark Gillies told Autoblog. At this time, VW only has info about the Clubsport in German, which you can take a look at below. Related Video: Weltpremiere des Golf GTI Clubsport am Worthersee Exklusives Jubilaumsmodell zum 40. Geburtstag des GTI Golf GTI Clubsport debutiert mit 265 PS und Boost-Funktion Im kommenden Jahr feiert der Golf GTI seinen 40. Geburtstag.

Volkswagen kills planned 10-speed DSG

Sat, Sep 19 2015

If there are two things in this wild and crazy industry that keep growing, they are the size of cars and the number of gears in their transmissions. It wasn't ten years ago that cars with six forward gears – either manually or automatically shifted – were a relative rarity. Now, there are a multitude of sub-$30,000 cars with at least a six-speed automatic. But while eight- and nine-speed automatics are becoming increasingly common, no automaker has delivered a production ten-speed automatic (which may be a good thing, considering the reception to most nine-speed gearboxes). Ford and General Motors were collaborating on one as recently as April 2013, and Hyundai has was allegedly working on one way back in 2011. Most recently, though, Volkswagen announced a ten-speed, dual-clutch automatic in November 2014. And now, less than two years later, the project has apparently been shelved. That's according to our Vegemite-loving friends at Motoring.com.au, which report that both the cost and complexity of project has proved unfeasible for VW. "In the end, we had to balance what our priorities were with our transmissions and other things are more important and more urgent," an unnamed source at the Frankfurt Motor Show told the Aussie website. The ten-speed DSG was slated for a number of three- and four-cylinder models from VAG's entire range of affordable vehicles. It was also, allegedly, to feature in the ultra-high-performance Golf R400, Motoring reports. It's unclear how its cancellation will impact the company's future projects, if VW will look elsewhere for its small-car gearboxes, of if there's another – perhaps conventional – new transmission in the pipeline. Currently, VW's highest gear-count dual-clutch is the seven-speed DSG, shown above with company CEO Martin Winterkorn.
