This is my 1956 Oval Window. I am the 2nd owner of this California Oval. The original owner was my mom's best friend since childhood. I got the bug from her brother who stopped driving it in 83. I got the bug in rough shape. It was originally Diamond Green. It was hit 2 years ago in the left front quarter. I had the section replaced by A&B Restorations in Temple City. I used all original German metal. The paint job is not the best but looks good for a driver. I had the front beam replaced by Jim's VW in Monterey Park along with all new shocks, tie rods, steering, etc. Brakes are fine. New cylinders and master cylinder installed when I began driving it. Along with all new brake lines. He has done all the engine work, maintenance for me. The tires are new with less than 500 miles on them. The numbers match body and pan. I have used this as a daily driver for several years. It has a 36hp motor which I drive on the freeway at 65mph no problem at all. I have been averaging about 35mpg. Original transmission shifts great. Still 6Volt. I had the interior redone by Tito's Upholstery in Rosemead. Seats are in great shape and the cloth headliner is perfect. The pans are in good shape with the exception of directly under the driver seat. It needs to be replaced. There is a patch piece currently there but it needs to have the rusted part cut out and a new quarter pan welded in. I had this done on a 63 Bug I used to own and total cost parts and labor was about $140. All windows are original German glass except the front windshield. The passenger door still needs the rubber replaced which I have (from Wolfsburg West) and the luggage area and engine compartment need the rubber moulding (which I have) Thanks for looking. Clear title with CA yellow plates. More pics on request. This car drives great. This is one solid bug.

Tanner Foust drifts in with new VW Passat [w/video]
Thu, Apr 9 2015Tanner Foust, like many drifting and rallycross names, may have had a long track record with Ford, campaigning Blue Oval drifters in Formula D, the X Games and the Global RallyCross Championship. He won a few medals with Nissan too. But these days he's all about the Volkswagens. He drives a Beetle in the aforementioned GRC, but is now set to return to Formula Drift with the Passat you see here. The Top Gear USA co-host's new ride is ostensibly based on the German sedan we all know, but instead of a 1.8 turbo, a V6, a TDI or even a W8, this one packs a 7.4-liter V8. That mammoth mill sends about 700 horsepower to the rear wheels through a four-speed transmission, but will churn out a good 900 hp on nitrous. In short, it should be better suited towards drifting than the Passat 4Motion this writer tried to slide so many times in his youth. The beast is sponsored once again by Rockstar Energy, and we're looking forward to watching Tanner use it to try and retake the titles he won in 2007 and 2008. At least 30 VW managers knew of emissions cheat
Wed, Oct 14 2015You know how the Volkswagen diesel scandal is very, very, very bad? Well, if a report from Germany's Der Spiegel is true, it's about to get a lot worse. Throughout the entire affair, VW has maintained that it was a small, isolated group behind the so-called defeat devices. Der Spiegel, though, claims that at least 30 managers knew what was going on and that dozens will be suspended for their role in the scandal. The story cites both an external probe ordered by VW and conducted by US law firm Jones Day as well as the company's own preliminary findings. This report flies directly in the face of what Volkswagen of America CEO Michael Horn, shown above, said in his sworn testimony to congress last week. Horn straight up said that the scandal "was something individuals did," blaming a sort of rogue group of software engineers (although he also acknowledged such an argument was hard to swallow). If it's proven that he was among the 30 employees involved, or he can be otherwise connected, the embattled exec could be in big trouble. According to the Der Speigel story, a VW spokesperson said, "The number is without foundation." Der Spiegel also cited a VW engineer, who said that any diesel engine, like the EA188, EA189, and EA288, that could get by without pricey emissions controls should "have [made] any engine developers leery." We should expect additional information on VW's internal response to the scandal later this week, when Group CEO Matthias Mueller addresses management.
Top 10 small cars with the longest total driving range
Thu, Mar 19 2015Editor's Note: Since this article was originally posted in the spring of 2015, much has changed in the automotive landscape, especially among those shopping for small car economy. With thanks to Volkswagen for their blatant cheating – and subsequent cover-up – on diesel emissions, the largest player in the diesel passenger car segment isn't playing – they're paying; billions are going for both car buybacks and federally-imposed penalties. And for a few VW execs there exists the very real possibility of jail. With the absence of a big player and the abrupt entrance – via Chevy's new Bolt – of an affordable EV with 200+ miles of range, we've limited the diesel listings to Jaguar's new XE. And for those wanting an updated look at efficiency and range, Autoblog has it – or the EPA has it. Long before electric vehicles were part of the mainstream conversation, car lovers and skinflints alike would boast about the total range of their vehicles. There's something about getting farther down the road on one tank of gas that inflames the competitive spirit, almost as much as horsepower output or top speed. Of course, the vehicles with the very best range on today's market are almost all big trucks and SUVs; virtually all have the ability to carry massive reserves of fuel. Top up a standard Chevy Suburban and you can expect to travel almost 700 miles (you'll need to stop before the Suburban stops...), while a diesel-fed Jeep Grand Cherokee manages almost as many. But what about vehicles that are smaller? The EPA has, essentially, three classifications for 'small' vehicles: Minicompact, Subcompact and Compact. All three are measured based on interior volume, meaning that some cars with rather large exterior dimensions and engines slot in next to traditional small cars. But even though impressive GT coupes from Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes-Benz may have much larger gas tanks to feed their powerful engines, that capacity is offset by higher rates of consumption... in most cases. We used the EPA's Fuel Economy Guide for model year 2017 cars as a start, calculating the official highway miles per gallon rating with each vehicle's tank capacity. The resulting numbers aren't necessarily real world, but they do offer a spectrum for total theoretical range. The eventual top ten surprised me on a few occasions, and comprised quite a varied list of vehicles. 10.
