Greetings

I am selling my 1999 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner SR5 Extended Cab RWD pick-up truck. I was the first and only owner. It's been my ride for 15 years and I hate to part with it but my automotive needs have changed so I'm moving on. Overall the truck is solid. It has normal and reasonable wear but there are no known problems and it is not in need of any servicing. I maintain it well and always repaired things immediately if they broke or wore out, usually with better parts than it had to begin with. I had all Toyota services done as close to the recommended intervals as possible. It's a healthy truck and I'm sure has many years and miles left to go. All work has been done by either me, Jiffy Lube, or a Toyota dealership. I have some maintenance records and beyond that can answer any additional questions you may have.

Engine

Toyota offered two different straight 4-cyl engines for this truck. This one has the larger 150 hp 2.7L 4-cyl. The timing chain has never been replaced, however, it is a chain not a belt and Toyota does not specify a recommended replacement interval as long as the engine oil is maintained properly, and it was. There are no fluid leaks I'm aware of. It did have a small leak in the oil cover gasket very recently, but I had the gasket replaced by Toyota so that's all fixed. Also had them install new NGK Iridium IX spark plugs and two new serpentine belts at the same time, for preventative maintenance. It has a K&N air filter which works great and saves money because you can just clean it and reinstall it, you don't have to ever buy new air filters. Many years ago the starter died and I replaced it with a better one and have not had a problem since.

Transmission

The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smooth and properly, no known mechanical issues. I towed a 1300 lb boat for two summer seasons early on and it pulled effortlessly, haven't towed anything since then, and the rear axle has never been submerged coming in / out of the water. This PreRunner also comes with switchable ECT which allows easier towing by keeping the transmission in lower gears longer so you have more pulling torque.

Exhaust

Quiet, no rust-through, holes or leaks. No loose hangers, metal, or rattles.

Fuel & Emission

About a month ago I had a check engine light. I had Toyota diagnose it, the charcoal evap cannister needed replacing, I installed a new one, all is good now. Runs on unleaded, gets 18-19 mpg on average just like the sticker advertised. It's been that way since I bought it. I run Red Line fuel system cleaner through it at every oil change and the injectors have never had a single problem. Other than the charcoal cannister I've never had a check engine light for any other emission related component. When they recently diagnosed the cannister I had them do a throttle body cleaning at the same time, just in case.

Electrical

Electrical system is sound, all components (wipers, headlights, turn signals, hitch lights, cruise control, etc) function properly. There's one dash light bulb out behind the heating / cooling temperature knob, but it doesn't affect any functions. Power windows work great. The driver's side window motor died a couple years ago and I replaced it with a brand new one, perfect ever since. The truck has dual airbags and the passenger side can be turned off manually with the ignition key when you have a child passenger.

Heating & Cooling

Air blows as cold as when I first bought it, freon has never been recharged. No squealing or issues with the compressor. Don't need heat often in FL but that works fine too.

Radiator

A few years back the radiator developed a pinhole so I replaced it with a performance radiator. It has worked perfectly since then and the engine has never over-heated (either before or after install.) I also replaced the fan clutch as it was spinning too freely. All good now.

Steering & Suspension

Tight, no vibrations wobbles or drift, holds alignment like a rock, doesn't pull to either side. Turns tight and is easy to park. No squealing or straining in the power steering pump. The front disc brakes developed a pulse a few years after I bought it. I learned Tacomas tend to do that because the front OEM disc rotors are not well made. I replaced them with aftermarket slotted and cross-drilled performance rotors. The pulse never came back. At that time I also replaced the rear drums plus new pads all around at the same time, just so everything matched. That was years ago and pads eventually wear out, so I just replaced them with new pads a few months ago. Brakes should be set now for a long time.

Body & Paint

It was garage kept for the first half of its life, then outside for the second, so the body does show some paint wear in some spots as seen in the photos. There's no serious rust spots, just minor surface stuff like the little pit on the hood and some worn paint spots on the roof and fender flares. Front edge of the hood also has lovebug scars, but that's hard to avoid in FL. The paint has worn off the chrome under the driver's window, not sure why it's fine on the passenger's side. Back sides and rear windows are factory dark. Driver and passenger windows were tinted later to match. Many years ago someone bumped me from behind, like a 5-10 mph thing. Caused a minor ding to the rear bumper and tailgate. I had the tailgate repaired and repainted and it still looks like new, but I left the bumper dinged as it was so minor. Other than that it has never been in any other accident (vehicle history report will be 100% clear if you decide to pull one.) Front grill and headlights are aftermarket replacements. They're showing signs of age but it's just cosmetic, they're fully functional.

Interior

I don't smoke so it's clean and clear inside. The interior shows normal minor wear, nothing terrible, just some minor carpet discoloration and a couple cracks in the vinyl where my elbows rest, as seen in the pics. No other cracks in the dash or console other than those. When it was brand new I did replace the OEM radio with a Kenwood tape player + 6 disc CD changer (under the driver's seat.) Works perfect, sounds great, removable faceplate for security, and I think I even have the manual for it in the glove box. I do not have the OEM Toyota radio anymore. Headliner is good, no sign of it coming down, although there's a faint mark or two.

Bed

Originally the truck came with a plastic bed liner but I removed it and had LineX professionally installed. Best thing ever, that stuff has protected the bed really well.

Wheels & Tires

16" alloy American Racing with some hairline spidering from where the chowderheads at the tire place nicked them during rotations. Have no idea if that's fixable but it's not terribly obvious unless you're looking for it. The pictures also show some brown on the rims, that's just dirt I didn't have time to get off, rain clouds were rolling in. The wheels actually clean up even brighter than what you see in the pics. Tires are Firestone Destination LE (Highway All-Season) P265/70R16 . They run smooth, none of the vibration or balance problems I've had with other large tires. They rank 2nd in category on Tire Rack with all Excellent and Superiors and are expected to get 60,000 miles based on manufacturer warranty. These were installed Oct 2010 so they should have a good 20,000 miles or more left on them. As you can see in the pics the treads are still really thick.

Options

Here's the complete options list for this truck, just in case I missed anything above:

SR5 package, Air Conditioning, Sliding Rear Window, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Cruise Control, Power Steering, Tilt Wheel, AM/FM Stereo, Cassette, CD (Multi Disc), Dual Air Bags, Bed Liner, Towing Pkg, Alloy Wheels, Wide Tires, Two 12v Outlets, Rear Jump Seats, and a Hitch Receiver with Ball.

Also, three (3) master ignition & door keys, all the tire jack stuff that came with the truck, the lug lock for the wheels, and the spare tire that came with the truck (located under the bed) as well as the owner's manual, a repair manual (Haynes or Chilton, can't remember) and I'll even throw in about $100 worth of touch-up paint I bought to fix the hood and flares, but never got around to doing.

Terms and Conditions

As you can see by my 100% positive feedback, and hopefully this thorough auction description, I am a reputable eBay user with a solid history and would love to keep it that way. If you have any questions at all, please email me prior to placing bids so we can clear up problems before they happen.

I've made a conscientious effort to describe my truck in detail with both text and photos; however, it's pre-owned, not brand new, not perfect. Signs of wear might be more obvious in person, under close scrutiny, like small nicks or chips, light scratches or minor abrasions, wheel scuffs, or other indications of normal wear and tear not described or shown in the photos. By bidding you understand and accept that fact. If you click the images on the left you'll get larger hi-res versions, so check them out.

The truck is sold as is. No warranties, neither expressed nor implied, are included. Pre-sale inspections and test drives are welcome if you're local and we can work out scheduling. If you'd like me to take specific additional photos please let me know and I'll do that and get them to you.

If you win the auction you must pay in full by cashiers check, money order, cash in person, or bank to bank wire transfer, so please make sure you have funds available or are pre-approved for the full loan amount before placing any bids. If funds are not received within the time limit you will be reported to eBay and the truck will be re-listed. Payments are subject to bank verification and must fully clear before I do the title transfer.

By winning the auction you are entering into a legal and binding contract. Please make sure you can pay before bidding on it. Any unqualified bidding, shill bidding, auction interference, or any form of harassment will be reported to eBay. I reserve the right to cancel bids from anyone with bid retractions, excessive negative feedback, or empty eBay accounts with little to no history.

The truck is free from any liens and has a clean title which I currently hold in my name so after you win the auction things will be simple

  1. You will need to submit payment in full and that payment must be verified and clear
  2.
  3. We will both sign a FL HSMV 82050 Bill of Sale document
  4.
  5. I will fill out the title and sign it over to you.
  6.

Once you receive the bill of sale and signed title from me you can take them to the DMV and get the truck transferred over into your name, register it, get plates, and drive it away. DMV will mail you a new title later.

If you win the auction and are local we can do all those things in person, and assuming the payment clears immediately we can swap papers and get everything done right away. If you are remote we will need to do everything by email or US mail and you will have to arrange shipping or someone to come pick it up, I can't deliver it. All shipping costs and charges will be yours, as is securing insurance for the vehicle.

That's it, thanks for reading. Let me know if you have questions and good luck!

Toyota develops new pre-collision system with steering assist

Sun, 13 Oct 2013

A number of automakers are working on developing fully autonomous cars, but it looks like the groundwork for such technologies will likely show up first as semi-autonomous systems for both safety and convenience. Following recent announcements from Nissan and Ford in this area, Toyota has now released information for some of its advanced semi-autonomous technologies that could be offered in production cars over the next few years.
On the safety front, Toyota's new pre-collision system with pedestrian-avoidance steering assist is aimed at protecting the folks who aren't in the car. This system combines visual and audible alerts with automatic brake assist and automatic steering. If warnings don't get the driver to slow down, the brake assist kicks in if a collision is very likely, but if that is still not able to avoid the impending collision (and if there is enough room to do so), the car can automatically steer itself around the pedestrian. This sounds most beneficial for last-second dangers such as a person accidently stepping out into the road in front of a car. Toyota hopes to have this technology available to customers by 2015.
The Japanese automaker is also testing a suite of technologies called Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA). The key part of this is a new adaptive cruise control system that uses vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications rather than a radar-based system. This cooperative-adaptive cruise control allows vehicles to communicate their acceleration and deceleration data with other cars, which Toyota says this helps to improve fuel efficiency and traffic flow. Also a part of AHDA is the Lane Trace Control feature, which sounds like a next-gen lane keep assist. This system uses cameras, radar and a computer to keep the vehicle in a "smooth driving line" by being able to change steering angle, engine torque and braking force. Toyota says this technology could be in place by the "mid-2010s."

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.

These are the cars being discontinued for 2024 and beyond

Fri, Jun 21 2024

While we get new and updated car models every year, its inevitable that we'll need to say goodbye to some nameplates as well. This time around, it feels like we have confirmation or reports of an unusually large number of vehicles being discontinued in 2024 and the coming years.  We shouldn't be surprised. A large number of automakers are approaching their various target dates for electrification of their fleets. As such, some beloved internal combustion cars are going away, sometimes with appropriate fanfare like special editions. Others are slinking away quietly, killed by slowing sales and changing consumer trends. Of course, the end of production doesn't necessarily mean permanent death. Some of these models could be resurrected in later years ... and probably as an EV. With that in mind, here are the vehicles that are being discontinued in 2024 and beyond.   Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Alfa Romeo ended the production of its combustion-only Quadrifoglio models in April 2024 as the Italian automaker moves toward an electrified future. This isn't the end of the Quadrifoglio entirely, though, with Larry Dominique, Alfa Romeo senior vice president and head of North America, writing, "I look forward to presenting the next chapter in the four-leaf clover’s journey."   Chevrolet Camaro GM is ending production of the Chevy Camaro after 2024, but is sending it off in style with a CollectorÂ’s Edition. WouldnÂ’t it be cool, though, if Chevy brought it back as an EV?   Chevrolet Malibu Rumors of its demise have been around for a while, but now itÂ’s official. GM will end production of the Chevy Malibu in November of 2024. The assembly line in Kansas will be retooled to build the replacement for the Chevy Bolt.   Dodge Durango The three-row Durango is slated to be replaced by the Stealth nameplate after 2024. The Durango name could make a comeback later, according to rumors, on a body-on frame SUV based on the Jeep WagoneerÂ’s platform.   Ford Edge This is the last year for the Edge in the U.S., with the final unit rolling off the assembly line in April. On sale since 2007, the Edge topped 100,000 sales in all but three full years of production.   Ford Escape Newly refreshed for the 2023 model year, FordÂ’s popular Escape compact SUV is reportedly taking its leave in 2025 in order to usher in — you guessed it — an EV in its place.
