Here's one of the 330 RAV4 EVs, Factory made Toyota EVs made from 1998 to 2003, in private hands. This one is in really great condition, having been garaged day and night it's first 9 years of use in the Bay Area of California. It now resides 10 miles north of Washington, DC, in Laurel, MD, and is an active participant in local EV events, and is my daily driver.
Check out Wikipedia for "RAV4 EV" - you can see this very EV sitting on the floor of the Washington DC Auto Show in two pictures.  Efficiency of this AC drive system is one of the highest- EPA rating was an equivalent of over 130 mpg(e).  Car comes with  electric power steering, heat pump AC and heat, anti lock brakes, RAV4 EV Specific tires (Bridgestone Ecopias that actually say "For EV use only" on the sides!),  timer delayed charging, and a magnificent NiMH battery pack made of 24 Panasonic EV-95 batteries for a 288v pack voltage.

As a new EV, Toyota claimed 100-110 mile range.  That was a little optimistic, but I can tell you that, at this very moment, I can do 80 miles, by driving conservatively, and driving on local roads, where 50 percent was secondary highway (50-55 mph), and the rest lower speed (30 mph). Of course, driving faster affects your range, as does fast acceleration, etc.  Still, my best guess is that the pack has suffered less than a 10 percent to 15 percent degradation in range over the life of the pack. Amazing. Oh, by the way- that range estimate? That's to the bottom of the yellow, not running the EV into the red bar on the "gas gauge", at all. In other words, I won't run it to dead- it's got more range than that, but you just shouldn't run into the red, and I've only run into the yellow 4 times in 4 years of ownership. (FYI, reconditioned battery packs are available from Battery MD in Sacramento, but you won't need one for several years!)

Top speed is about 80mph, but range will suffer a bit at that speed. Nonetheless, people that have bought Nissan Leafs claim that the RAV, even with a 9-13 year old battery, equals the Leaf in the city, and is slightly better on the highway in range. It's an almost competely silent driving experience, but is designed to 'act' like a 'regular' gas vehicle. It's really, really rewarding to drive.

And, there are EXTRAS!
It comes with TWO brand new, and two used Bridgestone Ecopia EV tires, AND, a thousand-dollar value, very rare, second Toyota "TAL" charger!  Both the stock Toyota TAL chargers have been "Portabilized"- that is, designed to be carried in the car if you want to- so I kept one in the back of the RAV, and one in the garage. Both work flawlessly, but the pretty charger has a cracked paddle handle that has been repaired and taped up, and the weathered charger, well, looks like it sat on a post outdoors for 5 years, which is true. Both chargers work flawlessly. It's inductive charging, so you can plug in in the rain, the snow, etc.  There's a demo out there of someone plugging the charging paddle in to the receptacle underwater in a fish tank. NO exposed wires. It's that safe. By the way, if you want to pay for shipping, and are patient, I'll find the stand designed for this charger somewhere in my garage, that you bolt onto a concrete pad. (Think an old fashioned pay phone designed to mount on a wall, or on a metal stand). It is free to the buyer, but you can't have the stand till I find it.....

Looks GREAT, drives perfectly, inexpensive, unbelieveably reliable.  I'd park it at the Auto Show, having used 1/3 to charge, and come back 10 days later, to have the charge at exactly the same place. My new EV won't do that. Kind of made me want to keep the RAV.

THE GOOD- This EV looks pretty much brand new. It's been Auto Show quality, detailed by the former BMW professional detailer every year, just before the auto shows. Oh- I detailed it to take the pictures in this ad, so it comes to you cleaner than a dealer would have made it for sale. It comes with California HOV lane stickers.  It's tires are in really good shape. It comes with spare tires- 2 new, two used (I kept them if I needed to retread them.) It comes with a spare charger. There are no dash cracks- like the rest of the car, it appears as new. I kept the seats covered with a waterproof Cordura seat cover, to protect the upholstery. It comes with a cute, snarky Lilo and Stitch sticker in the back window that you can remove if you like. I loved it, so I left it on.
THE BAD-  The RAV4 EVs (until 2003) had a gold filament windshield, very rare, and not replaceable. I've got a small (already filled) 1/3" crack about 4" up from the base of the windshield in the center. It's been stable 3 years, so you don't have to worry about it. You DONT want to replace this windshield- replacement windows don't have the heating elements in them. Also, the HWS (Heated Windshield Switch) is intermittent- I'm pretty sure it's the switch. .Haven't replaced it yet.  It's easy to buy. I haven't bothered with it, because the car still has the normal defroster, and I never needed it that much.   Finally, even though there's almost no dents at all on the car, there is one rear bumper scuff, on the driver's side, that I've never had touched up. If you're not familiar, you should know that RAV4 EVs only charge of 240v (dryer or stove outlets), not 110 (your toaster).  It's very easy to charge, though. 27 amps charge rate, takes about 3-4 hours to charge(if you drove it a long way), and if you buy the right adapter, you can charge your car off the modern J1772 public charging stations that are popping up everywhere.
One final thing. The previous owner (There have only been two) installed a cel phone holster to the left of the steering wheel, and I've never taken it out. You get to.
THE UGLY-   There isn't any. Just that scuff, HWS switch, and repaired charging handle on one of the two chargers(works great).

I've been driving electric since 1998, and I gotta tell you, it's hard to part with this one. If you wonder why you don't see people dumping these on Ebay as the Leafs and Teslas come out, well, we fall in love with them, they seem to run forever, and they put a smile on your face that won't quit. So, people rarely sell them!

I can help arrange shipping, but if you come here to see it and pick it up, I'll give you a very thorough checkout, as I'm an airline pilot, and a member of the board of the Electric Auto Association,  and I want you to be happy with your purchase!

U.S. auto sales fall in July, as Detroit dials back on inventory, rental sales

Tue, Aug 1 2017

DETROIT — U.S. carmakers said on Tuesday they continued to slash low-margin sales to daily rental fleets in July as General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles struggled to curb a slide in retail sales. July is on track to be the fifth straight month in which the annual pace of car and light truck sales declined from the same month a year ago, in part because of fewer fleet sales, analysts and industry executives said. July 2016 sales hit a strong 17.9-million-vehicle pace. GM said the seasonally adjusted annual sales rate fell to an estimated 16.9 million vehicles in July. At midmorning on Tuesday, GM shares were down 3.4 percent at $34.77, Ford was down 2.8 percent at $10.91, and Fiat Chrysler shares were down 0.3 percent at $12.05 in New York. GM sales dropped 15 percent from a year ago to 226,107 vehicles, as the company cut rental fleet sales more than 80 percent. The automaker said inventories of unsold vehicles at month's end were 104 days, down from 105 days at the end of June. GM has promised investors to reduce inventories to 70 days by year-end. Ford said its July sales dipped 7.5 percent to 200,212 vehicles, as it cut fleet sales more than 26 percent. Inventories fell to 77 days from 79 the previous month. Fiat Chrysler said sales dropped 10 percent to 161,477, as it also cut back sales to daily rental fleets. Among the top Japanese companies, only Toyota reported a year-to-year gain, with sales up 4 percent to 222,057 — just 4,000 units behind GM. Honda sales were down 1 percent to 150,980 — its first-quarter sales continuing to decline in North America but seeing a big increase in China. And Nissan sales fell 3 percent to 128,295. GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler have cautioned that second-half financial results likely will be lower than first-half results, in part reflecting production cuts in North America and pricing pressures. The automakers this year have been deliberately dialing back sales to rental-car companies, which often generate little to no profit, while struggling to keep retail sales from sagging further, according to industry analysts. Industry consultant LMC cut its full-year forecast for new vehicle sales to 17 million vehicles. Automakers sold a record 17.55 million vehicles in the United States in 2016.

2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross vs. small crossover SUVs: How they compare on paper

Fri, Feb 23 2018

In the midst of the crossover SUV boom, each traditional size segment has become saturated. As a result, automakers are beginning to fill the gaps that separate classes, giving us some interesting in-between options. The all-new 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross jumps right into one of those in-between categories bookended by compact and subcompact crossovers. It's a niche that offers more space and feature content than the smallest vehicles, with an extra dose of style and a lower price than bigger ones. Because of the Eclipse Cross' in-between nature, though, there's not really an obvious direct competitor. As such, we've selected a diverse group of small crossovers that are similar to the Eclipse Cross in some but not all key areas: size, price, feature content, style and likely buyers. The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, 2018 Toyota C-HR and 2018 Nissan Rogue Sport each have elements in common, but are different enough to provide useful points of comparison. A chart of specifications and key standard features is shown below, followed by more in-depth analysis. And if you wish to compare these crossovers with others not listed, be sure to check out our comparison tools. Engines and Drivetrains One of the Eclipse Cross' biggest advantages in this segment will be its engine. Subcompact crossovers, including the other three we've chosen, are sluggish to say the least. This new Mitsubishi should be different as it packs a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that belts out a whopping 184 pound-feet of torque. We say whopping, because the C-HR, Crosstrek and Rogue Sport all have between 139 and 147 pound-feet. Horsepower is similarly unimpressive at just 152 horsepower - the same as the Crosstrek - but that torque should make passing and on-ramp runs much more satisfying. The appeal of crossovers for many people is the availability of all-wheel-drive, and this is where the Subaru gets an advantage. Like with all Subarus that aren't a BRZ, the Crosstrek has standard all-wheel drive. The Mitsubishi comes close, making all-wheel drive standard on every trim level except the very base ES trim level. On the Rogue Sport, all-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels. Depending on where you live, though, being able to have front drive on a high-trim crossover could be a plus because it will save some money and improve fuel economy. The C-HR loses this battle as it's only available with front-wheel drive.

Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota allowed to inspect own hydrogen tanks, Telsa tour reveals expansion

Tue, Sep 2 2014

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Ministry has certified Toyota to self-inspect its high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The approval allows more freedom in production timing, as outside inspectors previously had to be on site during the manufacture of hydrogen tanks for vehicle prototypes. Toyota has passed the stringent standards to become a registered manufacturer of the 700-bar hydrogen tanks, which the company will use in its upcoming fuel cell vehicle (FCV). With the improved efficiency this certification allows in the manufacturing process, Toyota believes it will help to lower the cost of the FCV. Read more in the press release below. A look inside Telsa's fremont Factory shows thriving activity and increased capacity. Analyst Trip Chowdhry, in a rare tour of the factory, describes a bustling facility capable of producing the Model X and Model III alongside the Model S. A part of the floor labeled "Driver Assist" suggests to Teslarati that Tesla is researching a self-driving car. Chowdhry reports that the factory lobby was "busy with European suppliers and Asian suppliers." He also found an energized workforce and culture similar to Silicon Valley startups. The car features a range of almost 75 miles, power steering, infotainment, rear-view parking camera, driver information display and an emergency power reserve feature, called REVive, offering an extra five miles of range activated through a smartphone. Mahindra also launched a program called "Goodbye Fuel, Hello Electric" in which customers pay to use the e2o by the mile. Learn more at The Indian Express. Toyota Approved to Self-inspect and Manufacture Hydrogen Tanks for FCVs Toyota City, Japan, August 29, 2014-Toyota Motor Corporation has received approval from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to self-inspect and manufacture high-pressure hydrogen tanks for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). This makes Toyota the first company to become a registered manufacturer of 70 MPa (700 bar) hydrogen tanks under Japan's High Pressure Gas Safety Act, revised in 1997 by METI. Toyota will now be able to increase the efficiency of the process of manufacturing safe high-pressure hydrogen tanks that ensure customer confidence.
