This Is Toyota Description of the Limited Edition.
The 2013 Toyota RAV4 comes with a 176-horsepower, 2.5L 4-cylinder engine under the hood, fitted to a new 6-speed automatic transmission. The transmission features a new flexible torque-converter lockup feature that permits better efficiency, especially at lower speeds, while smoothing performance as well; EPA ratings range up to 24 mpg city, 31 highway for front-wheel-drive models and there's a new Eco mode that helps aid more fuel-efficient driving. Front-wheel-drive models get an Automatic Limited Slip Differential that can be engaged at low speeds and help negotiate slippery areas like a snowy driveway. The new RAV4 has handling that's more car-like than ever, thanks to a double-wishbone rear suspension as well as a Mac-Pherson strut-type front suspension and, overall, a lowering of the center of mass. Speed-sensitive electric power rack-and-pinion steering provides crisp response. Inside the new RAV4, new thin-profile front seats help maximize legroom in back and front seats. Limited Edition models upgrade the seating further with French stitching on SofTex upholstery and trims. Rear-seat space has been expanded, and the seatbacks can recline somewhat when needed--or flip forward (split 60/40) to expand cargo capacity (with easy-retracting rear headrests).
Safety features include a total of 8 airbags, including a driver knee airbag, as well as anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and Brake Assist. The body structure has also been completely re-engineered, with more high-strength steel than the previous version. And an available Blind Spot Monitor system with Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles. RAV4 come with Alloy wheels, plus keyless entry, cruise control, power locks and windows and air conditioning. Roof rails, a moon roof, fog lamps, folding power mirrors with integrated turn signals, dual-zone automatic climate control, sport-bolstered front seats, and a cargo cover. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, Smart Key entry, push-button start, and a power lift gate. Display Audio sound systems with a 6.1-inch touch screen, as well as AM/FM, CD, a USB port, an auxiliary input, Bluetooth audio streaming and six speakers. Bluetooth hands-free calling capability is also included. Through the audio systems, you can also use the base system to control climate-control settings, use the available navigation system, or access subscription-based En-tune functions--with mobile apps for services like Bing (search) and Pandora (streaming radio). There's also a multi-information display (MID) that can be navigated through buttons on the steering wheel, with easy access to trip-computer functions and other displays. The step-up JBL Premium Audio system that's available on the RAV4 Limited adds a 576-watt, 8-channel amp and a total of eleven "Green Edge" speakers.

Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota battery breakthrough, PSA's millionth BlueHDi diesel

Fri, May 6 2016

Scientists at Toyota have developed battery technology that allows for higher energy density. Using material from hydrogen storage, researchers at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA) in beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan have created an electrolyte that works well with a magnesium metal anode. Besides improving energy density for smaller, more powerful batteries, magnesium is also more stable than lithium, making it a safer alternative. Rather than guarding their secret, Toyota is sharing details of this breakthrough in order to advance the technology in hopes of an earlier mass deployment of magnesium batteries. See the video above, and read more in the press release below. Farmdrop – a sort of online farmer's market in the UK – is looking for help naming its electric delivery "vanimals." The Nissan e-NV200 vans are painted and decorated to look like cows, pigs, and chickens. While three of the vans have already been named, fans can suggest their own clever ideas for the rest of the fleet on social media. Those whose names are selected will win a month's worth of shopping on Farmdrop. Cary McCarface, anyone? Read more at the company's website. PSA has built its millionth Euro 6 BlueHDi diesel engine. The automaker builds two diesel engines – a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter – at its plant in Tremery, France at a rate of 7,000 engines a day. BlueHDi technology uses three different emissions control mechanisms to filter pollutants out of diesel exhaust, including an oxygen catalyst, an additive filter to remove particulate matter, and a Selective Catalytic Reduction system to reduce NOx. BlueHDi is used in all new Peugeot, Citroen, and DS Euro 6 diesel vehicles. Read more at Green Car Congress. Charging Ahead Toyota Scientists Make Breakthrough on Safer, Smarter Batteries May 04, 2016 ANN ARBOR, Mich. (May 4, 2016) -- For anyone (i.e. everyone) who's ever panicked when their mobile device chirped, "low battery," the future could be far less stressful, thanks to the advanced battery research of scientists at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA). A new breakthrough involving magnesium batteries may soon open the doors for smaller, longer-lasting batteries for everything from cars to cell phones. What's the Big Deal with Magnesium? Magnesium metal has long been theorized as a much safer and more energy-dense alternative to current lithium battery technology.

The ugly economics of green vehicles

Sat, Sep 20 2014

It's fair to say that most consumers would prefer a green vehicle, one that has a lower impact on the environment and goes easy on costly fuel (in all senses of the term). The problem is that most people can't – or won't – pay the price premium or put up with the compromises today's green cars demand. We're not all "cashed-up greenies." In 2013, the average selling price of a new vehicle was $32,086. The truth is that most Americans can't afford a new car, green or not. In 2013, the average selling price of a new vehicle was $32,086. According to a recent Federal Reserve study, the median income for American families was $46,700 in 2013, a five-percent decline from $49,000 in 2010. While $32,000 for a car may not sound like a lot to some, it's about $630 a month financing for 48 months, assuming the buyer can come up with a $6,400 down payment. And that doesn't include gas, insurance, taxes, maintenance and all the rest. It's no wonder that a recent study showed that the average family could afford a new car in only one of 25 major US cities. AutoTrader conducted a recent survey of 1,900 millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) about their new and used car buying habits. Isabelle Helms, AutoTrader's vice president of research, said millennials are "big on small" vehicles, which tend to be more affordable. Millennials also yearn for alternative-powered vehicles, but "they generally can't afford them." When it comes to the actual behavior of consumers, the operative word is "affordable," not "green." In 2012, US new car sales rose to 14.5 million. But according to Manheim Research, at 40.5 million units, used car sales were almost three times as great. While the days of the smoke-belching beater are mostly gone, it's a safe bet that the used cars are far less green in terms of gas mileage, emissions, new technology, etc., than new ones. Who Pays the Freight? Green cars, particularly alternative-fuel green cars, cost more than their conventional gas-powered siblings. A previous article discussed how escalating costs and limited utility drove me away from leasing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hyundai Tucson, which at $50,000, was nearly twice the cost of the equivalent gas-powered version. In Hyundai's defense, it's fair to ask who should pay the costs of developing and implementing new technology vehicles and the infrastructure to support them.

Toyota confirms i-Road electric trike for production

Tue, 08 Oct 2013

The wacky, three-wheeled Toyota i-Road we saw in Geneva earlier this year will be heading to production. But before you run down to your local Toyota dealer looking for one of these all-electric "personal mobility" vehicles, chances are, you'll never actually see one unless you visit Japan.
Announced at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) expo last week, Toyota said that the i-Road would be used as a part of the Ha:Mo car-sharing system in Japan. Weighing in at around 661 pounds, with a 28-mile-per-hour top speed and a two-passenger seating arrangement, the i-Road seems more like a fully enclosed scooter than a car, but it does offer a 30-mile driving range and has a nifty articulating front suspension that leans into corners. As for Ha:Mo, Toyota says that the number of cars in the program will increase from 10 prior to October 1 to 100 by the middle of this month, and the number of stations will almost double from 13 up to 21. Toyota has more details about the car and Ha:Mo in the press release posted below.
