They don't get much nicer than this 2005 Toyota Prius. It is just as clean as the day it was new. It has had one owner, runs and drives 100%, has a clean Autocheck and is being sold with no reserve. The 1.5L four cylinder electric/gas hybrid engine purrs along without a miss, smoke, fluid leaks or any issues. The hybrid system works perfectly. It charges and assists as necessary and the autostop engages when stopped. No "check engine" or warning lights of any kind. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly without hesitation. The brakes, suspension and steering work like new. No exhaust leaks. The exterior is a glossy silver with no dents, dings or scratches. There are a few tiny stone chips on the front of the hood. The lights and lenses are bright with no cracks. The tires, on factory alloy wheels, have about 50% tread (see pic). No windshield cracks but there is a chip behind the passenger side wiper. The overall appearance should be considered way above average. The interior condition is equally as clean. The carpet is very clean with no stains, holes or wear areas. Same thing with the cloth seats. All the power options such as cruise control, side mirrors, windows, etc. work as designed. There is a factory sound system with CD and steering wheel controls. The heat is hot and the AC is cold. The interior looks hardly used. This was obviously a well maintained Toyota Prius. We think that there are many more years of reliable service with this car. There are no mechanical problems and no indication of any impending issues. The new owner will be able to drive home, with confidence, no matter where they live. In Jamaica, it's not easy to sell or buy hybrid cars
Wed, Jan 15 2014Jamaica's mellow reputation and Rasta vibe contributes to an international reputation of an island nation that moves at a leisurely pace. And the term "leisurely" certainly applies to the rate of sales of hybrids there. And we thought Mitsubishi i sales in the US have been slow. The country's Toyota dealership is still in the process of explaining hybrid technology to many of its prospective customers, with the widespread perception remains that a standard Toyota Prius needs to be plugged in for electrical charging, the Jamaica Gleaner reports. Because of such slow exposure, Toyota has only sold about 10 hybrids in Jamaica since the Japanese automaker started selling them there in 2010. And we thought Mitsubishi i sales in the US have been slow. Toyota dealers in Jamaica continue to tout hybrid technology that can boost fuel economy by about 30 percent but are going up against the fact that Toyota's hybrids now need to be pre-ordered and aren't kept in stock because of sluggish demand. There's also the fact that Toyota's Japanese operations insist on an approval process that ensures the hybrids sent there can handle Jamaica's road conditions, and it typically takes three to four months for a Prius to get to Jamaica once ordered. Island locales provide a curious dichotomy for advanced-powertrain vehicles. On one hand, the driving distances tend to be relatively small, lengthening the amount of time it takes to pay back the original cost premium. On the flip side, importing fuel to islands makes gas prices skyrocket and can prove costly for the economy in island nations. Late last year, for instance, the government of another Caribbean nation, Barbados, estimated it spends about $250 million a year on gas used for personal vehicles. That's why the government there is pushing for more electric-vehicle adoption, though the number of EVs on the island was in the low double-digits as of mid-2013.
Cleanliness of Toyota Mirai fuel cell exhaust depends on air quality
Sat, Nov 29 2014Is the water vapor coming out of Toyota's first production fuel-cell vehicle drinkable? If you're driving through the Sierra Nevadas? Probably. Cruising through Beijing? Not so much. Toyota executive Seiji Mizuno discussed whether the water vapor emitted from the Toyota Mirai is safe enough to drink and, according to Automotive News, the short answer is "yes," since the slightly-acidic vapor has "fewer organic impurities" than milk. The catch, though, is that the vapor immediately gets mixed with the surrounding air. That means that there's always the chance that something funky gets mixed in with the air intake, especially if the Mirai's driving through a smog-infested city. That makes the idea of swigging off the tailpipe a slightly riskier venture, so it's best to keep that reusable bottle full of tap water handy. Toyota, which recently showed the Mirai off at the Los Angeles Auto Show, confirmed earlier this month that the Mirai would start sales in California in 2015 with lease rates starting at $499 a month. While the model's MSRP will be $57,500, federal and state incentives could bring that number to less than $45,000. Fewer than 200 Mirai vehicles will be available in the US by the end of next year.
