The last of a great breed, and one of the last 40-series
production units: this is my 1984 Australian FJ45 Troopy, VIN FJ45406186. Built
front to rear for expeditioning plus lots of goodness like a rebuilt engine, air conditioning,
power steering, upgraded alternator, new tires, full floater
axle and more. There are dozens of cool and new parts on the Troopy. I am detail oriented, so crack a beverage,
sit down, and read the full description. Built with input from 4WD Toyota Owner magazine, a publication solely for 4WD Toyota and Land Cruiser owners. Check them out online. 1984 model. Literally one of the final 40-series Land Cruisers to come off the production line, and in the extremely rare FJ45 Troop Carrier (Troopy) configuration. Super rare and super cool. Powerful 4.2L 2F engine, rebuilt less than 20,000 miles ago by HM Gem Australia. Runs great. Factory 12V system. The 2F means parts are readily available from US Toyota dealers and aftermarket companies. Has brand new spark plugs and wires, PS/alternator/water pump belts, clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder, installed by Torfab. New water pump, new fuel pump, new fuel filters (2) and new OME steering stabilizer. Brand new spare radiator/ water hoses included. 4-speed H41 transmission with factory granny low range gear. This FJ45 will climb a tree. Literally. The FJ45 runs on petrol or propane (LPG). I have run it on both. It is set to run petrol only currently. The Troopy has two, 40lb (9.4 gallon) propane tanks. A dash switch changes between petrol or propane. You can switch from one to the other on the fly. Propane burns cleanly, is cheap, and yes, the filler fitting works in the USA. Mileage on propane is around 230 miles total with both tanks filled. Factor in the main petrol fuel tank and you’ve got around a 500 mile total range! Dash gauge shows level of propane, too, plus there’s a gauge on the main tank too. FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING. Supremely rare! Compressor spins good, needs belt and re-gas. Factory power steering with rebuilt pump. Works great! Dual battery system. Backup battery is charged by the solar panel on roof (see pics) when engine is off. Brand new main battery from Costco. Upgraded to 150A alternator. Fully tinted windows. Proper large rear view mirrors. Note the original floor mat is in excellent condition. There's an external jump start Anderson plug at right rear corner, and cables are included. Flood and pencil beam spotlights on roof that work with high beams. Brand new 33” Goodyear Duratracs, including spare, on 16” wheels. Factory rear full floater axle (Aussie spec, USA only got semi-floaters). Front disc brakes, rear drums. All new front hardware upgraded to 4Runner units (bigger and better) by Torfab. Parking brake also fully rebuilt by Torfab. She’s a solid old girl, has various patches and bubbles of rust inside and out but no rot, and frame is fine. Overfill of fuel caused paint to flake below inlet. One tie rod end needs replacing. Blue Max shocks and springs, 2.5" lift. POP TOP ROOF TENT! Love this! No harsh wind resistance and not top-heavy like a normal rack mounted rooftop tent. Unlatch the latches, push it up and there is an upper floor with 4” foam mattress for comfortable sleeping for two! Canvas sides with screen windows that zip up. So awesome to not have to set up and tear down a ground tent! Interior/exterior: where to start? Full battery monitoring equipment, rear view camera (I’m keeping the viewscreen but camera stays), rear seats with seat belts, two 20-gallon water cans with powered pump and two outlets, one inlet is missing and common RV-style filter housing needs replaced, hot water shower outlet, fold down table with room for sink, mirror and light on side, 12V outlets, Kenwood stereo with iPod cable but won't turn on, trailer brake controller, heavy duty top-of-the-line voltage monitoring units and power inverter (see pics), interior LED lights, passenger map light on flexible stalk, upper storage shelf at windshield roofline, UHF radio, multiple cubby storage boxes and more. Rare factory digital clock and hand throttle. Large 65-quart capable sliding aluminum freezer/fridge platform comes with Troopy. (Note: EvaKool fridge seen in pics not included with sale, sorry.) You can fly in to Seatac, the Kitsap Airporter will take you direct to Gig Harbor and I will pick you up in the Troopy. Also happy to deliver to Tacoma area. I just got back from an expedition to SE Oregon in her, see pics. Truck is 30 years old, she's not perfect, needs attention here and there--it's a Land Cruiser! ‘Nuff said! Vehicle is sold “as is” with no expressed or implied warranties. Payment via cash or cashier’s check only drawn on a major bank. Clear Washington state title, will release on clearing of valid cashier's check or immediately with cash. I am a Cruiserhead with a small barn of Cruisers, and I’ve sold a few in the last year, see my 100% positive feedback for the HJ61, FJ45, HJ47 etc. Please feel free to ask questions and yes I welcome test drives and mechanic checkouts (you arrange for and pay for). Thank you and happy bidding for a rare and awesome FJ45! |

HyFive hydrogen infrastructure gets $51M boost across Europe
Fri, Apr 4 2014"High five!" was one of the catch-phrases of Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakh comedic alter ego Borat. A real-world HyFive is being announced by a power broker named Boris. And this is serious business. London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a program called HyFive, which will see automakers and other entities invest 31 million British pounds ($51 million US) in a demonstration project for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. By next year, London will have three hydrogen refueling stations, while there will be one each in the Danish cities of Aarhus and Odense and one in Innsbruck, Austria. Leaders of the program are planning for other stations in Sweden, Germany and Italy. The five participating automakers are BMW, Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, while other companies involved include Copenhagen Hydrogen Network, ITM Power and Linde. Those OEMs will make 110 fuel-cell vehicles available for deployment in Bolzano, Copenhagen, Innsbruck, London, Munich and Stuttgart. The program represents an effort to address the "chicken or egg?" challenge inherent to establishing a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market. While the powertrain technology provides benefits by combining fossil-fuel-like refueling times with long driving ranges and zero emissions, establishing a refueling network and building fuel-cell vehicles is prohibitively expensive, especially in low volumes. The London mayor is no stranger to green transportation technology. Late last year, Johnson made himself available for a photo opportunity with Ecotive and Frazer-Nash, which had developed a six-passenger extended-range plug-in taxicab. The mayor got a test drive in the cabs this week. You can check out the HyFive press release below. Global leaders sign up to GBP31m plan to demonstrate viability of hydrogen vehicles International project HyFive pioneers hydrogen fuel cell technology A pioneering GBP31 million deal will be struck today (3 April) to make hydrogen vehicles a viable and environmentally friendly choice for motorists across Europe. Leading motor manufacturers, hydrogen fuel suppliers, the Mayor of London's Office and energy consultancies from around the globe are signing up to the HyFive project, the largest of its kind in Europe, at City Hall in London today.
Toyota previews next Lexus RX with Tokyo-bound JDM Harrier
Wed, 13 Nov 2013The Lexus RX shares much with the Toyota Highlander, but its more direct counterpart is the Toyota Harrrier. Never heard of it? That's because Toyota only sells it at home in Japan, and now it's revealed a new one. So if the Harrier is essentially a Toyota-badged version of the RX, then what's the big deal, you ask? The big deal is that the new Harrier which leaked in July, set to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next week and which you see here isn't quite the same as the Lexus, and those differences could (and in most cases likely will) make their way over to the RX as well.
For starters, the styling is different. Granted that the Lexus version will almost certainly get a spindle-shaped grille, but even so, the Harrier's nose seems to protrude further than the RX's and the headlamps are a notably different shape. The greenhouse is also a different shape, coming to a sharper point at the back, and the mirrors are fixed to the A-pillar not to the door panel. The taillamps are revised, the tailgate has a new profile and there's a pseudo-diffuser at the bottom of the rear bumper. Subtle changes, to be sure, but then Toyota and Lexus are known for their evolutionary approach to styling. The interior has apparently undergone some updates as well, with a more dynamically styled dashboard, a more symmetrical center stack and different seats, steering wheel, door panels... the works. The infotainment display screen has also moved further down from its position in the current RX.
Toyota will offer the new Harrier with a 2.0-liter four mated to a CVT and driving either the front wheels or all four, and a hybrid setup with a 2.5-liter married to a 140-hp electric motor. The RX is offered here with a 3.5-liter V6 either on its own or with an electric assist. We wouldn't expect Lexus to go swapping the larger engines for the smaller ones, at least not for the US market. There's plenty more to the Harrier, of course, than the similarities and differences to the Lexus RX, and if you're buying a premium crossover in Japan, you can delve into the full details in the press release below, together with the images in the gallery above.
Akio Toyoda pledges return to WRC in 2017 with a Yaris
Sat, Jan 31 2015There have been rumors of Toyota returning to the World Rally Championship since the end of 2013, and a Yaris prepped by Toyota Motorsport in Germany has been caught on The Continent several times last year in testing. Akio Toyoda visited Rally Finland while we were there with Hyundai to watch a race up close, and he said that the passion people still had for Toyota's past exploits encouraged him. He finally answered the question about when they planned to enter the series, announcing in Tokyo that they'd line up for the season in 2017. The Japanese company, a legend in rallying, got into the sport in 1979 and left in 1999 after winning seven titles in ten years through the nineties with Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankkunen. The 2017 return is likely due to the regulation changes that year to allow more power than the roughly 300-horsepower in today's challengers and the switch to a fuel-flow formula to let manufacturers use different kinds of engines. Toyota has been sitting in on the WRC rules meetings, and the final slate of changes will be announced at the end of this year. The Yaris that's been testing is powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder that meets current regulations, but we can expect it to change somewhat before it's race-ready. TMG will test the car for the next two years, then it will go up against fellow manufacturers Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Citroen, as well as Fords run by M-Sport. There's video of the Yaris running solo through the Belgian countryside above, and a gallery of the coming car below.
