1997 - Toyota Land Cruiser on 2040-cars
San Clemente, California, United States
1997 Land Cruiser Wagon in white with a tan leather interior. Nicknamed "Watson". The Kelly Blue Book on this car appears to be almost 9,000. It has very low mileage at 113,321 miles!!! It drives beautifully and looks fantastic! Every time I take it to be serviced or detailed auto workers ask if I want to sell it. It has never been in any kind of accident of any sort. We have taken good care of it, getting it serviced regularly at Torrance Toyota and saved all service records. We saved the original window sticker and have the original bill of sale. We have owned it for the past 16 years and bought it from a dealer in Northridge, California when there was only about 14,000 miles on it. When we took it for its last service, Torrance Toyota recommended getting 2,000 worth of work done which I listed above. As much as we love this car-- and we do-- we decided to sell it instead. The main repair needed is the Axle Seal. The dealership service center said both outer axle pivot seals are leaking diff oil and they recommended front axle overhaul. We didn't get a second opinion on this. Here is the information from the window sticker, which I saved: Mechanical and performance: 4.5 DOHC Engine w/24 Valves 4-speed ECT Automatic overdrive transmission Full time four wheel drive Viscous Coupling Center Differential Front and RR Coil Spring Suspension Front and Rear Stabilizer Bars Power Assisted Recirculating Ball Steering 2nd Gear Start Switch 4-Wheel Ventilated Disc Brakes P275/70R16 Radial Tires (5) Towing PKG w/Trans Oil Cooler Safety: Driver/Passenger Airbag (SRS) 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake System Side-Door Impact Beams Center High-Mount Stoplight Exterior: Color-Keyed Dual Outside Mirrors and Door Handles Tinted Glass Rear Window Defogger Front and rear Mudguards Fender Flares 16x8JJ Silver Styled Wheels Comfort and Convenience: Leather Seats Full pile-cut carpeting CFS-Free Air conditioning premium ETR Cassette w/9 Speakers and power antenna Height adjustable front shoulder belt anchors FR and RR intermittent Wipers Front and Rear Heaters, Cruise Control with Digital Clock Tilt Steering Power Windows/Doors Locks/Mirrors Auto-Off Headlamps The window sticker said it gets 13 miles to the gallon in the city and 15 on the highway. We paid 42,972.25 for this car on August 5, 1998 and have that contract. The odometer reading at the dealership was 14,177 and they said it was new.

Toyota aims to build autonomous car around 2020 [w/videos]
Tue, Oct 6 2015The race is on to get increasingly sophisticated forms of autonomous driving technology on the road, and brands like Tesla are bringing these solutions to some drivers now. But as one of the world's largest automakers, it's no surprise to see Toyota competing in the field, as well. By 2020, the company thinks a person could be largely unnecessary for freeway trips. With a suite of tech called the Highway Teammate, a modified Lexus GS is already showing what's possible. Using a combination of millimeter wave radar, LIDAR, and cameras, the GS gets a full view of the road, and software processes all of the info to make decisions. The result is a ride on the freeway without human interaction. The system can merge, change lanes, make passes, take curves, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Accurate map data is a necessity to make this work, so the system currently only being tested on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway. While Highway Teammate might not be the best name, it accurately communicates the way Toyota thinks of the tech. The company is making big investments in artificial intelligence to assist drivers, not completely replace them. You can see the system in action in the video below, and the second clip's gravely serious narrator explains the company's idea of having a fully connected road someday. New Toyota Test Vehicle Paves the Way for Commercialization of Automated Highway Driving Technologies Toyota City, Japan, October 6, 2015-Toyota has been testing a new automated driving test vehicle called Highway Teammate, with the aim of launching related products by around 2020. In addition to demonstrating the capabilities of next-generation safety technologies, the vehicle represents Toyota's view of the evolving driver-car relationship in the age of artificial intelligence. Toyota believes that interactions between drivers and cars should mirror those between close friends who share a common purpose, sometimes watching over each other and sometimes helping each other out. Toyota refers to this approach as the Mobility Teammate Concept, and Highway Teammate represents an important first effort to give form to this concept.
Toyota officially outsells GM, VW through first three quarters
Tue, 29 Oct 2013When it comes to global vehicle deliveries, the term "Big Three" doesn't apply to Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, but instead Toyota, GM and Volkswagen - in that order - through the third quarter of 2013. Toyota sold 7.41-million vehicles through the third quarter and is on track to deliver more vehicles this year than GM and VW, which sold 7.25-million and 7.03-million, respectively, through the same period, Bloomberg reports.
During the third quarter, from July to September, Toyota's 2.5-million deliveries helped to push it higher than its closest competitors this year. In that period, GM delivered 2.4-million vehicles while VW posted 2.33-million deliveries.
Part of the reason behind Toyota's and other Japanese automakers resurgence globally is the weakened yen, which can be attributed to policies made by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe since he took office in December 2012. Many refer to those monetary easing policies as 'Abenomics,' which has led some, such as Ford, to call Japan a currency manipulator and is a big reason why the US is lobbying to oppose Japan's entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Toyota Hilux gets heart transplant from Lexus IS F
Thu, Sep 10 2015The Toyota Hilux might not be sold in the US, but Toyota's venerable pickup has an international reputation of being able to go anywhere and do just about anything. The trucks aren't really known for their speed, though, at least until Toyota South Africa Motorsport's new, one-off project. This bruiser ditches the usual diesel engine and replaces it with an unrestricted 5.0-liter V8 from a Lexus IS F making 449 horsepower. Of course, it takes more than power to handle the rigors of high speed off-roading. The motorsport team also adds bigger, competition-spec brakes, fully adjustable dampers, new springs, and retuned gearing to make the truck look practically ready for the Dakar Rally. The gearbox is really the only part that carries over. The V8 gives the special Hilux quite a mean growl, too. With the new Tacoma just launching in the US, maybe the engineers at TRD need to apply this same concept over here for its own Lexus-engined, one-off pickup.
