This is a rare custom converted FJ80 to a 1HZ Toyota diesel with a 5 speed manual transmission and 2 speed transfer case. The donor vehicle was a 1991 Toyota FJ80 with 238k miles on the chassis that was owned and well-maintained by a boeing engineer in Seattle. The diesel drivetrain is a 1HZ Toyota 6 cylinder from Australia, the mileage on the motor is approximately 115,000 miles. The conversion was done by a journeyman mechanic in Alaska. These motors are not turboed, therefore they are absolutely bullet proof (google it). However, they can be turboed if you've got the money. Current mileage on the rig is just over 250k. Compression numbers are strong. The head was replaced with a brand new head, head gasket and valve job. The injectors were rebuilt, a new water pump was installed and an upgraded K&N air filter. The injection pump was just rebuilt by H&H diesel in Seattle with new vitron seals that are compatible with US Ultra low sulfur diesel. There is a dual battery system with a battery isolator switch and a BlueSeas battery isolator that charges the starting battery first then the auxiliary battery. The front hubs, bearings and seals were recently rebuilt and run smoothly. Both differentials, the transmission and transfer case have new synthetic fluids. The rig gets around 20 mpg highway. It has brand new tires and rims, and 3inch Old Man Emu left kit. Brand new stereo with blue tooth/mic and Aux hook ups. The rig is registered in California as a diesel. There is no rust on this vehicle. The only reason I am selling is because I have too many vehicles. The vehicle is currently located in Eureka, CA. However, I will deliver it to the Bay Area with a good non-refundable deposit. If you want to have it checked out I will take it to Ponci's Diesel in Fortuna CA, at your cost, I don't trust anyone else, sorry. The rig is in perfect shape. Email me if you're interested.

Attention: I mistakenly put the VIN for my 1984 Toyota pick up on this listing. The Landcruiser's VIN is JT3FJ8027M0007693

Ford fights back against patent trolls

Fri, Feb 13 2015

Some people are just awful. Some organizations are just as awful. And when those people join those organizations, we get stories like this one, where Ford has spent the past several years combatting so-called patent trolls. According to Automotive News, these malicious organizations have filed over a dozen lawsuits against the company since 2012. They work by purchasing patents, only to later accuse companies of misusing intellectual property, despite the fact that the so-called patent assertion companies never actually, you know, do anything with said intellectual property. AN reports that both Hyundai and Toyota have been victimized by these companies, with the former forced to pay $11.5 million to a company called Clear With Computers. Toyota, meanwhile, settled with Paice LLC, over its hybrid tech. The world's largest automaker agreed to pay $5 million, on top of $98 for every hybrid it sold (if the terms of the deal included each of the roughly 1.5 million hybrids Toyota sold since 2000, the company would have owed $147 million). Including the previous couple of examples, AN reports 107 suits were filed against automakers last year alone. But Ford is taking action to prevent further troubles... kind of. The company has signed on with a firm called RPX, in what sounds strangely like a protection racket. Automakers like Ford pay RPX around $1.5 million each year for access to its catalog of patents, which it spent nearly $1 billion building. "We take the protection and licensing of patented innovations very seriously," Ford told AN via email. "And as many smart businesses are doing, we are taking proactive steps to protect against those seeking patent infringement litigation." What are your thoughts on this? Should this patent business be better managed? Is it reasonable that companies purchase patents only to file suit against the companies that build actual products? Have your say in Comments.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata battles Toyota GT86 on track

Mon, Oct 5 2015

It's got two doors and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine up front, driving the rear wheels. It's made in Japan, and as far as bang-for-your-buck goes, it's a downright bargain. So which are we talking about, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, or the Toyobaru coupe known alternately as the Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, or Toyota GT-86? The answer is "yes," and it just goes to show, roofs notwithstanding, how close these two vehicles really are to one another. Which one is your favorite may come down to a matter of personal taste, but for its latest video, Auto Express set out to find out which laps faster around the track. On paper at least, the Toyota's 200 horsepower will trump the Mazda's 155 any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Then again, the Miata does weigh a good 400 pounds less, even with the 2.0-liter engine and despite its convertible bodystyle – but is that enough to make up the difference? You're going to have to just watch the video for yourself to find out. All we'll tell you is that the match is pretty darn close – what you might call a photo finish, if they were actually racing each other at the same time as opposed to each racing the clock separately. So watch the video above and voice your support for your favorite little Japanese sports car in the Comments section. Related Video:

Japan plans real-world diesel emissions test after companies fail

Fri, Mar 4 2016

Japan's transport ministry plans to start real-world diesel emissions tests after an experiment found four models from Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi that produced more nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions than the nation's rules allow, according to The Japan Times. Regulators there usually only perform emissions checks in the lab. The VW diesel scandal has everyone double-checking their figures. Diesel versions of the Toyota Hiace van, Land Cruiser Prado, and Nissan X-Trail produced up to 10 times more NOx than allowed. The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 was up to five times over the limit, The Wall Street Journal reports. There was no evidence of defeat devices in the vehicles. Mazda performed well in the experiment, though. The CX-5 passed with nearly the same results on the road and in the lab. The Demio, better known as the Mazda2, did nearly as well with only slighter higher figures in the real world than in the controlled setting. The experimenters theorized the reason for the excessive emissions was that cold weather caused the engines' software to shut off the exhaust gas recirculation to prevent damage, according to the WSJ. However, this behavior also increased NOx production. Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi don't have to worry about punishment from the transport ministry because this check was just an experiment. Their models already passed the mandated lab tests, which was the only requirement, according to The Japan Times. As governments begin greater real-world emissions tests, the results suggests diesels aren't very clean. A recent check in France found models from Ford, Renault, and Mercedes-Benz that didn't perform up to the standards. Regulators in India conducted similar evaluations and ordered VW to recall over 300,000 vehicles. Related Video:
