Up for auction is my 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser. It is a super original Land Cruiser with a cool patina that really turns heads everywhere I go. I purchased it from the original owner family. I'd drive this thing to Alaska with no concerns.

She has some rust on the rear fenderwells, but far less than is typical with these trucks. The frame and the rest of the body are very solid.

The good:

Very original down to the paint. Runs/stops/drives on the highway great and is completely reliable. 4WD runs smoothly in high and low. Has a newly rebuilt tranny and water pump (I was told by the P.O. about 5,000 miles ago). Shifts better than any rig I've owned. I've put ~700 miles on the truck since September. I also just installed a new windshield and gasket. Original 2F with all emissions equipment intact.

The less good:

Paint is faded. Leaks a lot of oil. Stereo does not work. Needs driver's side window regulator replaced (I have a good used one that will be included in sale). Rear running lights don't work at night (but blinkers and brakes are fine). Parking brake needs adjustment. Has wear and tear as would be expected for a vehicle of this age, but nothing that keeps the truck from making it safely from A to B.

Has the auto industry hit peak hybrid?

Hybrids are known for their great fuel economy and low emissions, but it looks like given current market conditions, only about three percent of new car consumers are willing to pay the premium for them. A new study from IHS/Polk finds that the hybrid market share among overall US auto sales are falling, despite more models with the technology on sale than ever before.
The study examined new car registrations in March from 2009 through 2014. In that time, the auto industry grew from 24 to 47 hybrid models available to consumers, but market share for the powertrain remained almost stagnant in that time. As of 2009, hybrids held 2.4 percent of the market; it fell slightly to 2.3 percent in 2010 and grew to 3.3 percent in 2013. However, 2014 showed a drop back to 3 percent. Overall hybrid sales have been growing since 2010, but they just aren't keeping up with the total auto market.
According to IHS/Polk, this isn't what you would expect to see. Usually, each new model in the market brings along with it a boost in sales. The growth in hybrid models 2009 to 2014 should have shown a larger increase in share for the segment.

Thieves still love older Hondas and pickups most, says NICB [w/video]

No one wants to have their car stolen, but a new study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau has some bad news for older Honda owners and pickup drivers. Fortunately, it has better news for drivers overall. The group is reporting that according to preliminary data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, thefts were down 3.2 percent in 2013 (versus 2012) to fewer than 700,000 cars. That's the lowest figure since 1967. That's also less than half of the peak of over 1.66 million thefts in 1991. "The drop in thefts is good news for all of us," says NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle. "But it still amounts to a vehicle being stolen every 45 seconds and losses of over $4 billion a year."
Honda drivers might not find it such good news with older Accord and Civic models topping this year's theft study. Toyota and Dodge can't really celebrate, either, with two models each on the list, as well. Overall, this year's list was split evenly between foreign and domestic models, which were mostly pickups.
