After Land Cruiser, Everything Changed
1980 Land Cruiser FJ40 with 5-Speed, PS, A/C and more
1980 – Pac Man is introduced. CNN becomes the first 24hrs News Station. Post-It Notes are invented”. Meanwhile,
Toyota Motors introduced its best Land Cruiser yet. For a half-century, over a million Land Cruisers have traversed
paths from the South Pole to the Sahara.
This 1980 FJ40 was restored by Cool Cruisers of Texas in 1996 and has been lovingly cared for and improved upon
continually ever since. She has some great upgrades I have outlined below. Painted in the factory 653 - Olive
Brown. This rig is mechanically and cosmetically 100%. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow.
I have three folders full of records going back to the early 90's documenting all expenditures on the truck. I
haven't added these up but I'm guessing it's over $50K!
Exterior / Mechanical
- Excellent body and frame. Recently received $3500 in paint and sheet metal work
- H55F (Toyota 5 speed transmission) conversion with new Tom Woods double cardan drive shaft. The truck will drive
at 70 MPH all day long with one hand on the wheel.
- Rides on new 33 10.50 15 BFG KM2 tires with brand new OEM wheels and hub caps.
- OME (old man emu) 2.5in suspension lift with new steering stabilizer and new Bilstein 5100 series shocks.
- Factory power steering
- Vintage air AC that will keep the you cool on hot summer days
- Both axles have been rebuilt by Independent 4X in Richmond, VA. This work was done within 4k miles ago. Has new
Warn premium hubs on the front.
- Rear axle has an ARB locker installed at the time or the rebuild/regear.
- Has the larger ARB compressor for airing up tires, etc. and was plumbed to the rear axle with an upgraded
stainless braided line, not the ARB blue plastic line.
- Rear axle has disc brake conversion.
- Front bumper is the HFS Cool Cruisers bumper and a freshly rebuilt/restored Warn 8274
- Custom door hinges that look factory for easy removal of two front doors.
- IPF halogen headlight upgrade
- Custom belly skid plate on underside.
Motor
In 2010, the engine had a burnt valve on cylinder 6 and the owner did a ton of work with the "while I'm in here"
mentality. The head was completely cleaned, milled and reworked with all new Toyota parts. Rebuilt the entire
cooling system to include all hoses with new full stainless hose clamps, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat. The
bottom end looked great so it didn't get pulled. Installed a brand new oil pan and magnetic drain plug. The motor
was desmogged by the previous owner. If you are familiar with the FJ40 Land Cruiser world, the work was completed
by a very knowledgeable specialist named Jim Chenoweth in Ohio. Jim also rebuilt the carb at that time. There is a
K&N air filter installed and an Optima Red Top provides electrical juice. The motor runs like a top.
Interior
- New CCOT front floor mat.
- Tuffy lockable center console with the stereo installed in it.
- Custom switch panel in original stereo for ARB locker and pump control as well as interior winch control
- Upgraded lights in dash board improves notoriously dim factory lights - You can now see the gauges at night.
- New shift boot on transfer case
- Front seats are OEM Style but far more very comfortable
Summary
Every bolt that has come out on this truck has been replaced with metric stainless. Countless hours removing
hardware to replace it with anti-seized stainless hardware. There are lots of little details that have been
completed on this truck, replacing all the gaskets under hinges and the hard top, new stainless latches, powder
coating, fuel filler cap, cigarette lighter, etc.
This is one very cool SUV that's still every bit as functional today as it was in when it drove off the showroom
floor. It's very tight, rattle free, and drive smooth, comfortable, quiet and capable. It's the kind of cool piece
that would be right at home parked at your favorite Friday night dive next to other vintage cars, or perched on a
mountain conquering your latest Saturday afternoon adventure. If you're looking for a cool classic that's fun,
unique and ready to hit the road, this is it!

Honda Civic losing ground to Toyota Corolla, sales crown threatened

Wed, Dec 17 2014

Oh, what a difference a year has made. When the numbers were tallied for 2013, the Honda Civic was riding high by claiming its segment's sales crown in the US despite being challenged by the latest generation of the Toyota Corolla for part of the year. However, with just a month to go in the battle for C-segment supremacy in 2014, it looks like Toyota gets to hoist the trophy this time. Looking at November sales numbers, Honda moved 300,644 Civics through the first 11 months of the year, down 2.1 percent in volume. Furthermore, for the month alone, the company sold 23,060 Civics, a 12.3 percent drop. Meanwhile, on Toyota's side, business has been booming comparatively. Through the first 11 months it sold 309,373 Corollas, a 10.6 percent jump, and for November alone it moved 25,609 examples, a 14.2 percent improvement. With fewer than 10,000 cars between them, it would take quite a December slump for the Corolla to lose this fight. According to The Truth About Cars, the Civic actually started out the 2014 somewhat positively with 5 percent growth over the previous year, though still behind the Corolla's figures. However, the Honda has seen a slide since then with five consecutive months of sales drops. Meanwhile, the Toyota has generally kept showing growth. Being the newer model of the two, the Corolla comes to this fight with an advantage. Honda hasn't let the Civic languish; it gave the model a CVT in 2014 to boost fuel economy. That's nothing like the Toyota's thorough recent rethink, though. According to TTAC, Honda does have reason to crow about the Civic, just not necessarily in the US. The model is on track to be the bestselling vehicle in Canada for the 17th consecutive year and have its best sales since 2008 there.

Trucks, SUVs — and Camry — shine in mixed U.S. January vehicle sales

Thu, Feb 1 2018

DETROIT — Automakers posted mixed U.S. new vehicle sales data for January, with American consumers continuing to abandon passenger cars for the larger pickup trucks, SUVs and crossover models that manufacturers also love because they are far more profitable. Total industry auto sales for the month rose 1 percent versus January 2016. According to Autodata Corp, which tracks industry sales, the seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of U.S. car and light truck sales in January fell to 17.12 million units from 17.44 million a year earlier. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a January SAAR of 17.2 million units. U.S. auto industry sales fell 2 percent in 2017 to 17.23 million vehicles after hitting a record high in 2016 and are expected to drop further in 2018 despite a solid economy. Interest rates are rising and around 4 million late-model used cars will return to dealer lots this year to compete with more expensive new ones. Automakers have used consumer discounts to boost sales, a growing concern for observers who say this undermines resale values and profits. Discounts declined in January, but remained above 10 percent of manufacturers' recommended prices. ""I think the industry has accepted that (sales) volumes will fall somewhat in 2018 ... and I don't think the industry is going to go over the cliff with insane incentives," Mike Jackson, chief executive officer of AutoNation Inc, told Reuters after his company, the largest U.S. auto retail chain, posted a higher quarterly net profit. Mark Wakefield, head of the North American automotive practice for consultancy AlixPartners, had a gloomier perspective. The industry's less-than-stellar sales performance for January showed "we are now past the peak," he said. "Automakers are now selling the deal instead of the vehicle," he said. "That's a tough spot to be in because that treadmill is hard to get off once you're on it." General Motors January sales rose 1.3 percent, driven by a 16 percent rise in fleet sales. Sales to consumers fell 2.4 percent. GM posted strong gains for models such as the Silverado pickup truck and Equinox crossover model, while its passenger cars continued to struggle. Ford The Blue Oval posted a 6.6 percent sales decline for January, with retail sales down 4.3 percent. Sales of Ford's F-Series pickup trucks - America's best-selling vehicle brand for decades — rose 1.6 percent. Passenger cars were down more than 23 percent.

Toyota Harrier gets a whale of a facelift [w/video]

Thu, 21 Nov 2013

Historically, the Toyota Harrier has been a doppelgänger for North America's Lexus RX - at some points, it was little more than a badge-swap and a few options away, at least aesthetically. That appears to be changing with this just-revealed new generation at the Tokyo Motor Show.
That's because this two-row, five-seat Toyota is in possession of a bold new look, dominated by a jutting, baleen-like grille edged in chrome, along with new headlamps and fascia. The greenhouse has likewise been revamped and gotten more pointed at the rump, which has new taillights, a resurfaced tailgate and a faux rear diffuser. Were it to be ported over to North American Lexus dealers intact, the Harrier's look would be jarring in light of the brand's spindle-grille-based design language, so we suspect that if the RX gets any of these updates (it was just refreshed for 2013), it will strike out on a different path visually.
Unlike the US RX, the new Harrier will rely on smaller-displacement four-cylinder engines, namely a 2.0-liter paired with a continuously variable transmission or a 2.5-liter four backed up by an electric motor. We'd like to see a smaller-displacement option for the US RX (it presently runs with 3.5-liter V6 engines in both gas-only and hybrid guise), but suspect it won't arrive until the next all-new model.
