I bought this car in April 1997 from a private party in Seattle, Washington. At that time it passed emission testing in Seattle and all the gear is still there.  I drove the car from Seattle to my home in Anaconda, Montana.  It operated very nice, just as it was supposed to.  I have not found the time to restore it and most likely will not in the future as I have other cars that have been waiting ‘their turn’ for over 40 years.

The mechanical operation is good with the following qualification:  All of the rubber hoses, boots, fuel lines and etc. should be replaced prior to driving.  They are very old now and well past a useful and safe life.  The odometer reading is 39,195 and I believe that is the true miles.

Car has been thoroughly steam cleaned and purposely left uncoated so that you can see exactly what you are getting.  The only undercoat is the remains of the thin original coat.  It hides nothing from view.

The major pieces of body metal that should be replaced are both rear wheel well quarter panels, the bottoms of both rear doors and the rear sill.  New replacement panels are included in the auction.  There are some rusted places in the floor board beneath the front doors.  These will repair with individual shop-made patches.

New parts included that have not been installed from Spector Off Road (SOR.com):

  • Original seat upholstery kit
  • Cargo Mat
  • Carpet set
  • Dash cap
  • Ambulance door weather strip L/H
  • Ambulance door weather strip R/H
  • Drivers door weather strip
  • Passenger door weather strip

New parts included that have not been installed from Cool Cruisers of Texas (coolcruisers.com):

  • L/H quarter panel
  • R/H quarter panel
  • Rear sill
  • Ambulance door repair panels:  both doors/2 pieces per door

Replacement cost for the new parts is over $1800.00 minus freight.

This is the original paint on the car.  It is not very pretty anymore but if you want to be able to see exactly what you are getting into then it is what you want.   This car will restore nicely to a first-class Cruiser that will have no problems or shortcomings that need an excuse.

The door panels are usable but do have defects.  The seats need the upholstery kit I referenced in the “new parts” list.

If you intend to install a different engine I will buy back the complete engine for 15 percent of the sale price.

A $500.00 deposit is required which is refundable if the car is not as described.

Additional photos on request.

I have another FJ40 on eBay now.  Its story is similar to this one.

Toyota and Mercedes begin the Super Bowl ad teases with dads and hares

Tue, Jan 20 2015

Advertising Age says pregame buzz is where Super Bowl advertisers really build momentum for their Big Game commercials, so let the teasing continue. We've seen the 30-second spot for the Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota are next out of the tunnel with campaigns that focus on a fable and fathers, respectively. The Mercedes tease gets former NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice lining up a talking-heads debate with eight-year-old Andrew Hunter about whether Hunter's hare could beat a tortoise in a race, but it's a disaster before it even begins. In what will be a continuing storyline, a social media component lets people side with #TeamTortoise or #TeamHare, with "a Big Race viewing party" going to a lucky winner. Mercedes also promises there'll be a hero at the end, which we imagine will something in the Three-Pointed-Star family as opposed to the Testudinae or Leporidae families. Toyota's all about the biological family, rolling out a series of tweets and Vine videos showing off ex-NFL'ers and their kids to hype the "One Bold Choice Leads to Another" campaign for the Camry. The profiled paterfamiliae will be examples of those "who have contributed to their families' lives in bold ways." A 60-second spot during the pre-game will feature Paralympic athlete Amy Purdy, then those stand-up dads will get their own 60 seconds during the second quarter. The social media tag for this one is #OneBoldChoice. You can watch Mercedes' opening salvo above, and check out a Toyota tweet with ex-quarterback Kurt Warner below. Toyota and Mazda set to expand partnership

Mon, May 11 2015

Toyota and Mazda are already teaming up for the Scion iA and Mazda2, but that partnership might just be the beginning. Reuters reports the two Japanese companies could expand their work together, with Toyota chipping in its experience with both fuel cells and plug-in-hybrid tech, and Mazda contributing its know-how in regards to its Skyactiv line of engines. The report cites a pair of unnamed sources that are "not authorized to discuss the matter publicly." The move, on the surface, is certainly appealing for both parties. Mazda has very little experience with hybrids (remember the Ford-rebadged Tribute Hybrid?), let alone something as advanced as a fuel-cell vehicle. Teaming with Toyota, arguably the world's greatest hybrid manufacturer, would give it a serious leg up. For the Japanese giant, meanwhile, a partnership with Mazda could expand the economy of scale for the Mirai FCV's tech, while Skyactiv engines would do well in replacing the base engines in cars like the Corolla, Camry, and RAV4. What are your thoughts? Would an expanded partnership between Toyota and Mazda make sense? Can you think of any drawbacks? Have your say in Comments. Automakers not currently promoting EVs are probably doomed

Mon, Feb 22 2016

Okay, let's be honest. The sky isn't falling – gas prices are. In fact, some experts say that prices at the pump will remain depressed for the next decade. Consumers have flocked to SUVs and CUVs, reversing the upward trend in US fuel economy seen over the last several years. A sudden push into electric vehicles seems ridiculous when gas guzzlers are selling so well. Make hay while the sun shines, right? A quick glance at some facts and figures provides evidence that the automakers currently doubling down on internal combustion probably have some rocky years ahead of them. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is a prime example of a volume manufacturer devoted to incremental gains for existing powertrains. Though FCA will kill off some of its more fuel-efficient models, part of its business plan involves replacing four- and five-speed transmissions with eight- and nine-speed units, yielding a fuel efficiency boost in the vicinity of ten percent over the next few years. Recent developments by battery startups have led some to suggest that efficiency and capacity could increase by over 100 percent in the same time. Research and development budgets paint a grim picture for old guard companies like Fiat Chrysler: In 2014, FCA spent about $1,026 per car sold on R&D, compared with about $24,783 per car sold for Tesla. To be fair, FCA can't be expected to match Tesla's efforts when its entry-level cars list for little more than half that much. But even more so than R&D, the area in which newcomers like Tesla have the industry licked is infrastructure. We often forget that our vehicles are mostly useless metal boxes without access to the network of fueling stations that keep them rolling. While EVs can always be plugged in at home, their proliferation depends on a similar network of charging stations that can allow for prolonged travel. Tesla already has 597 of its 480-volt Superchargers installed worldwide, and that figure will continue to rise. Porsche has also proposed a new 800-volt "Turbo Charging Station" to support the production version of its Mission E concept, and perhaps other VW Auto Group vehicles. As EVs grow in popularity, investment in these proprietary networks will pay off — who would buy a Chevy if the gas stations served only Ford owners? If anyone missed the importance of infrastructure, it's Toyota.
