Meet the Greenest and Meanest vehicles of 2016
Wed, Jan 27 2016If you've been keeping track, you won't be surprised with the number one entry in this year's list of greenest cars from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). In fact, the top three spots on the 2016 list are all the same as they were in 2015. After that, things get interesting. For one thing, this is the first Greenest list that doesn't have any purely internal combustion engine powertrain on it. Hybrids, yes, but if you want to be one of the top 12 greenest cars this year, you'd better have some sort of electric angle. ACEEE says that the conventional, gas-powered Smart Fortwo and Chevrolet Spark just missed the cut. In a statement, ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan said, "The 2016 scores are in, and plug-in electric vehicles are outpacing all other vehicle offerings in terms of environmental friendliness." Like last year, one of the noticeable vehicles missing from the green list is the Tesla Model S. One reason? ACEEE takes curb weight into account (lighter is better), and the Model S is a heavy beast. The ACEEE doesn't just look at the clean side of the ledger. It also puts out a "meanest" list. These are the vehicles that pollute the most, not only from their tailpipes, but also any pollution created during the entire manufacturing process, from mining the raw materials to the energy used to produce the vehicle at the factory. 2016 Toyota Tacoma fears no canyon in Detroit
Tue, Jan 13 2015It took a lot for it to finally happen, but with the 2015 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado posing a clear and present danger to its near monopoly in the mid-size pickup market, Toyota finally introduced a new version of its Tacoma. Introduced at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the long-serving Taco has been refit, ditching its old, thirsty and uncouth 4.0-liter V6 with a Toyota's smooth-revving and powerful 3.5-liter, naturally aspirated six pot. Output figures haven't been published, but considering the V6 churns out around 270 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque in vehicles like the Toyota Camry and Highlander, we should expect similar numbers in the 3.5's first truck application. Joining the six-pot will be the previous truck's 2.7-liter four-cylinder. Beyond the powertrain tweaks, Toyota has delivered a significantly updated aesthetic that borrows elements of the 4Runner with newer design touches. A strong, prominent grille and muscular fender arches are fitting touches, while the new wheel design, one of our, featured on the show Tacoma deliver some added visual impact. The cabin, meanwhile, could best be thought of as that of a baby Tundra, sporting a similar layout and, when properly equipped, materials and touches that wouldn't look out of place on its big brother, the Tundra. Suzuki will road-test EVs in India, start production with Toyota in 2020
Fri, Sep 7 2018NEW DELHI — Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp will start testing prototypes of electric vehicles in India by October, its chairman said on Friday. "We will start road-running tests using a fleet of 50 EV prototype vehicles in India from next month in order to develop safe and easy-to-use EVs for Indian customers," Osamu Suzuki said at the Global Mobility Summit at New Delhi. The company would then launch EVs in India around 2020 in cooperation with Toyota, he added. However, Suzuki said that for EVs to become popular in India, there had to be well-developed charging infrastructure. "In this regard, we look forward to proactive leadership from the Indian government," he said. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a plan to electrify all new vehicles by 2030, a target many experts call ambitious. EVs are expensive due to the high cost of batteries which are still not manufactured in India, and carmakers say a lack of charging stations could make the proposition unviable. Suzuki, parent of India's top-selling automaker, Maruti Suzuki, would start production of lithium-ion batteries for automobiles at its plant in western India from 2020, Suzuki said. India is one of the world's fastest-growing car markets, but EV sales are negligible compared with millions of petrol and diesel cars sold every year. Suzuki said to meet India's environmental challenges, the government would have to look at hybrid and CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles also.Related Video:
