The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a retro style, mid-size SUV with styling and off road performance reminiscent of the
original Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ40). Introduced as a concept car at the January 2003 North American International
Auto Show, the FJ Cruiser was approved for production after positive consumer response and debuted at the January
2005 North American International Auto Show in final production form. The FJ Cruiser is built by Toyota subsidiary
Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan since 2006 and shares many structural underpinnings from the Toyota Land Cruiser
Prado. On 5 November 2013, Toyota USA announced the 2014 model year
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser comes in a single trim level, with choice between rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive.
Rear-wheel-drive versions come only with a 5-speed automatic transmission, while 4-wheel-drive versions can be
equipped with that automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox. The FJ's 4.0L V6, the only engine available, makes 260
horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, with the dual independent variable valve timing allowing strong low-rev
torque for off-roading exploits. Manual-transmission versions with 4-wheel drive get a system that distributes 60
percent of power to the rear wheels under most conditions but can be locked to a 50/50 split. With the automatic
transmission there's a separate part-time 4-wheel drive system--allowing better gas mileage when you're commuting
or driving on the highway in clear conditions. Both versions include a separate low range for low-speed rock
crawling, and manual FJ Cruisers get a locking rear differential, which is optional on automatic FJs.
Rear-wheel-drive versions receive a limited-slip rear differential, with the included electronic stability and
traction control, to assure the surest footing possible. The FJ Cruiser is a true truck, with tough body-on-frame
construction and a boxed steel ladder-braced frame. A 4-link coil-spring rear suspension with solid axle and a
double-wishbone front suspension, together 4-wheel disc brakes, hydraulic power rack-and-pinion steering altogether
provide maneuverability and relatively responsive handling on the road, combined with some of the strongest
off-road ability in a stock SUV.Altogether, the FJ with its standard tires has 9.6 inches of ground clearance plus
approach (34 degrees) and departure (31 degrees) angles. Towing capacity is rated up to 4,700 pounds. The FJ
Cruiser doesn't completely forgo comfort. With an 8-way-adjustable driver's seat, most will be able to get
comfortable in front and have a good view out. In back, a 60/40-split rear seatback with removable bottom cushions
can be folded to a nearly flat cargo floor. In the cargo area there are lots of cargo-net hooks, bag hooks and
cargo tie-down points. Standard features on the FJ Cruiser include air conditioning, power windows, locks and
mirrors, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a rear defogger and a 6-speaker sound system with USB port, iPod
interface and Bluetooth streaming audio. The special Trail Teams Edition, available on 4-wheel drive FJs, adds
various equipment that is of use to off-roaders, including Bilstein off-road shocks, TRD alloy wheels, a rear
differential lock in combination with the A-TRAC traction system, additional skid plates, rock rails, illuminated
side-marker lamps, an AC outlet and a backup camera monitor, as well as TRD aluminum doorsill scuff plates and an
aluminum shift knob. From the outside, the model is easy to pick out from the crowd, thanks to its new 'Heritage
Blue' paint scheme, with black bumpers and blacked-out grille and door handles.

How to fix a $4,000 hybrid battery problem with vinegar and baking soda

Wed, Feb 18 2015

This is one of those 'Don't try this at home if you don't know what you're doing' DIY tales. Two weeks after imgur user "scoodidabop" bought a used Toyota Camry Hybrid with no warranty, he got the Christmas Tree dash display with warnings like "Check VSC System," "Check Hybrid System," and the Check Engine light. After some Internet sleuthing he figured it could be a faulty brake actuator, assuming the hybrid system warning was a false alarm. But it wasn't the actuator, it was the battery, a Toyota dealer telling him that his battery had "gone bad," and he'd need $4,457 to replace it. Then he had a brainstorm: it could be one of the cells that's gone bad, not the whole battery. Scoodidabop has some experience as an electrician, so he figured he could test it and replace any bad cells for about $45 apiece. He removed the battery unit from the trunk and over the course of two hours tested all 68 cells four times. He found nothing wrong. So he devised another type of test and checked every cell again. He couldn't find a problem with any of them. Turns out the problem wasn't in the cells, but with the dirty and corroded copper connectors at the ends of the high-voltage cables. He pulled the 34 connectors and their steel nuts, soaked them in vinegar, gave them a light steel wool scrub, soaked them in baking soda and water to counteract the vinegar, applied an anticorrosive and reinstalled them. That took an hour. When he replaced the battery, the warning lights had all gone out and the battery worked perfectly. Skill level: experience. Cost: less than $10. Perhaps it's time for hybrids to be able to test their own cells individually. Dealers, too.

2018 Hyundai Accent vs subcompact sedans: How it compares on paper

Fri, Sep 29 2017

Hyundai first revealed the new 2018 Hyundai Accent a few months ago, but that debut was in Canada for the Canadian-market car. We didn't get our look at the U.S. version until just recently, which is when we also finally got plenty of specifications on the little car. So as we did with the Genesis G70, we've brought you a breakdown of the Accent's specs and some of the segment's best and most popular: the Nissan Versa, Kia Rio, Chevrolet Sonic and Toyota Yaris iA. Before we get to the chart, let's give you a quick reintroduction to the 2018 Accent. The subcompact is completely new this year, and under the hood is again a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 7 fewer horsepower and 4 fewer pound-feet of torque than the outgoing model with totals of 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet. This drop in power probably won't be noticeable, though. It's also available with either a manual or automatic transmission, both featuring six speeds. Fuel economy hasn't been announced, but the Rio's numbers below are probably a good indicator as they share powertrains. The one thing that isn't available with an Accent is a hatchback. According to Autoweek, the hatchback was canned with the assumption that hatch buyers would simply purchase an example of the upcoming Kona crossover. But if you want a traditional subcompact hatch from South Korea, Kia is happy to oblige, as the Rio is still available as a hatchback. Learning that the Kona may have killed the Accent hatch causes us to wonder if Kia brought the Rio hatch to the U.S. because it wasn't planning on offering the Stonic.
