Toyota, Lexus recall 460,000 vehicles for stability control issue

Thu, Apr 14 2022

Toyota and its luxury subsidiary, Lexus, are recalling 460,000 electrified models produced for the 2020-2022 model years to address an issue that can cause the vehicles' stability control systems not to activate on startup. If you drive a new Toyota or Lexus and it has at least one electric motor in it (or it's the new LX 600), there's a better-than-even chance you'll be hearing from your dealer in the coming months. The good news for owners is that the issue is one of compliance, rather than something which may immediately endanger a vehicle occupant.  "A software error can cause the Vehicle Stability Control system (VSC) not to default to ON the next time the car is started under certain circumstances. This can result in a noncompliance with applicable regulations in the U.S," Toyota said in its announcement. "For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software of the Skid Control ECU free of charge to customers." Included in the campaign are the 2020-2022 Toyota Venza, Mirai, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Sienna Hybrid, and Highlander Hybrid. On the Lexus side, it hits the LS500h, LX600, NX350h and NX450h+. Notably absent here are the Tundra-based trucks with the new iForce Max hybrid, though Toyota may have addressed the issue in those models before they went on sale. On the other side of the coin, the LX 600 — a purely ICE model for the time being — managed to stumble into the defect pool.  Toyota says owners should receive notices before the end of June. Toyota settles complaints with states Attorneys General for $29 million

Thu, 14 Feb 2013

Toyota announced today that it has reached a settlement with the Attorneys General of 29 states and one US territory that will resolve their complaints relating to recalls performed by the automaker from 2005-2010, including those related to sticky accelerators and malfunctioning floor mats that may have contributed to cases of unintended acceleration.
The settlement includes a payout of $29 million to be divided among the states and US territory, as well as a commitment from Toyota "to take steps to make vehicle information more easily accessible to consumers to help them operate their vehicles safely and make more informed choices." The settlement also has Toyota continuing its rapid-response service teams and quality field offices that were put in place shortly after the largest of the recalls from 2010, as well as a "range of customer care amenities for owners of vehicles subject to certain recalls," though the press release below isn't specific about what those amenities might be.
This settlement marks the second major step in the last few months that Toyota has taken to settle legal disputes surrounding the unintended acceleration recalls, the first being a $1.4 billion settlement to address economic loss suffered by owners of current and past Toyota vehicles that may have lost value on account of these recalls.

Student driver backs over motorcycle at intersection

Wed, Jun 10 2015

You always have to be vigilant on a motorcycle. Take this helmet cam video as an extremely unfortunate example of that. While waiting at an intersection, the rider has to watch while a Toyota RAV4 backs over his cycle. He was lucky not to suffer any injuries in the freak occurrence, but the bike sustained serious damage. The rider laid out the whole story on Reddit and explained that the person behind the wheel of the RAV4 was a student driver. The motorcyclist says that he was aware of the crossover, but never expected it to reverse at high speed through of the intersection. With no time to really think, he chose to bail off the bike, and the decision might have saved his life. "The video ends where it does because there is absolutely nothing exciting happening afterwards," the rider wrote on Reddit. There wasn't any yelling afterward; they just talked. Police gave the student driver a ticket when they arrived. The bike might be finished, though. In a separate post on Reddit, the rider says that the accident "pierced the engine and the gas tank," bent the radiator, and did a lot of other damage, too.
