Recharge Wrap-up: Couple wins Toyota Mirai; Tesla Gigafactory wages reported
Sat, Nov 22 2014A couple who won a Toyota Mirai at the Los Angeles Auto Show are among the first people to own the new fuel-cell sedan. Marianne Ellis bought the winning ticket - auctioned off by the Environmental Media Association to fund environmental programs - as a possible 30th anniversary gift for her husband, David. The excited couple picked up their ceremonial keys at the LA Auto Show on Wednesday. "For us, it's about being at the cutting edge of change," says Marianne Ellis. "It's a chance to support environmental causes and clean energy, while showing it's possible to make a car like this part of your lifestyle." The Mirai will go on sale in California in the fall of 2015. Read more in the press release below. The salaries for 6,500 full-time employees at Tesla's Gigafactory battery production facility have been reported. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the 4,550 production associates and 200 material handlers will be paid $22.79 an hour. 460 equipment technicians and 360 quality technicians will get $27.88 an hour. 930 engineers and senior staff will earn $41.83, or $87,000 a year. Tesla plans to staff 6,500 people at the Reno, Nevada-based Gigafactory by 2020. Read more at the Reno Gazette-Journal or at Teslarati. Toyota goofs again in latest Mirai fuel cell ad
Mon, Mar 9 2015In the "gotcha" culture engendered by social media and viral campaigns, it looks like Toyota got, well, got. The Japanese automaker is starting a campaign for its Mirai fuel-cell vehicle, and included a line about the fact that the car "breathes in air." Of course, all light-duty vehicles do that, as Jalopnik's Opposite Lock happily pointed out. Jalopnik added that even electric vehicles have an air intake for their heat exchangers. Oops. It looks like Toyota doesn't think this message is wrong, since the image is still up on the company's Google+ page. The Mirai can still lay claim to something that may impress the layman in that it emits only water vapor from its tailpipe. It's a pitch Toyota started making to Americans last November when the company said it would start Mirai sales this year in California. Toyota's charging an MSRP of $57,500 for those looking to buy the car outright or a three-year lease rate of $499 a month for 36 months (with $3,649 due at signing) for those to want to lease the car. Toyota also said in January that it would ramp up Mirai production to about 2,000 vehicles in 2016 from about 700 this year, as it expands distribution into Europe and the US. In the US, refueling the hydrogen will be free. Just like the chemistry lesson from Opposite Lock. Related Videos:
Scion was Toyota's lost generation
Sat, Feb 6 2016Toyota's top North American leader was succinct in explaining the reasons for killing Scion. "It's the right decision at the right time," Jim Lentz said. It's hard to disagree. In a strong market that saw 17.5 million sales last year, Scion volume dipped three percent. Its product lineup has withered for years, which is always a telltale sign a brand doesn't have the full support of its owner. Though enthusiasts love the FR-S sports car, it's the fruit of a joint project with Subaru that also produced the BRZ. Scion's coolest car has a twin sold by one of its rivals. After the FR-S launched in 2012, Scion got nothing – squat – in the way of new products until the iA and iM arrived late last year, IHS senior analyst Stephanie Brinley noted. "[Scion] was not successful in building a visual brand identity or product personality," she said. Lentz, Scion's first vice president and now CEO of Toyota's North American division, admitted the market has changed. "Younger customers have a different mindset," he said. In the early oughts, a brand that catered to a youthful demographic made some sense, and this is one front where Toyota can declare victory. Seventy percent of Scion's buyers were new to Toyota, and the average age was 36 years old. The problem is, not enough of them buy Scions anymore. Scion hit a highwater sales mark of 173,034 vehicles in 2006 and hasn't come close to reaching that since. The recession hurt Scion, too. It bottomed out in 2010 with just 45,678 sales, a time when the rest of the industry was beginning to recover. There was a brief uptick (73,507) in 2012, but Scion failed to capitalize on that momentum and sales fell for three more years. Toyota is calling Scion's pending death a "transition" back to the main company. Sure, most of the cars will be rebadged Toyotas, like the FR-S, iA, and iM. The C-HR, an attractive future crossover that would have given Scion a boost, will go into production as a Toyota. But make no mistake: This is a failure. Toyota is closing a brand in the same way General Motors scrapped Oldsmobile, Ford shuttered Mercury, and Chrysler dropped Plymouth. Those brands languished for years. Toyota moved quicker to put the fork in Scion, which prevented it from becoming a long-term drain on the parent company. Lentz was dead on. It's the right time.
