Construction of Lexus' first US assembly line underway
Thu, 09 Jan 2014The ES is Lexus' top-selling sedan, but the Japanese luxury marque has never manufactured it outside of Japan. In fact, Lexus has never made any cars in the United States, one of its largest markets worldwide. But that's about to change.
Yesterday, construction began in Georgetown, Kentucky, on the first Lexus assembly line in America, the first concrete (or steel) step in a $360-million expansion of Toyota's plant in the Bluegrass state that will create 750 new jobs. The expansion was announced last April by chief executive Akio Toyoda at the New York Auto Show.
Once the new assembly line gets online in the fall of next year, Toyota plans on building some 50,000 units of the ES each year. Lexus sold a record 72,581 examples of the ES in the United States last year - 30 percent more than the previous year - so Lexus will either have to import some more from overseas or leave some buyers disappointed.
2013 Toyota RAV4
Tue, 16 Apr 2013A Nicer View Than Ever Of Middle Of The Road
When we had our first shot behind the wheel of the 2013 Toyota RAV4, the overall judgment from Managing Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski could be summed up in a sentence along the lines of, "Eh, not bad." The truth is that the compact crossover segment, now filled with not-so-compact offerings, is as cutthroat as any in the industry these days. When a heavyweight player like the RAV4 comes to market with a new generation, it is not at liberty to start from a clean sheet, lest it throw cold water on a vehicle that sells tens of thousands of units globally every month. Like De La Soul says, "Stakes is high."
If the choices in the marketplace were still largely limited to the Honda CR-V, as was the case when this market niche was green, the Toyota offering might actually seem like the exciting choice. But with new players offering better dynamic thrills (Mazda CX-5), cool turbo motors and fancy technology (Ford Escape), or even crunchy cred (Subaru Forester), the small crossover shopper is really spoiled for choice in 2013.
Student driver's Toyota crushed by British tank in Germany
Wed, Jun 3 2015Pulling out for a turn with too little room in front of another vehicle is always a bad idea, but it's an especially awful decision when the oncoming machine could destroy your car without even stopping. That's the lesson an 18-year-old student driver in Germany learned when a 62-ton, Challenger-2 tank from the British military ran over her Toyota. The young woman was reportedly making a left turn onto the road, but she somehow didn't see the convoy of tanks coming her way. Thankfully, the massive machine's driver swung it just far enough out of the way to crush the hatchback's hood rather than the person inside. Her Toyota was kaput, though. According to The Independent in the UK, the military vehicles were traveling from the British base in Paderborn to a training exercise when this occurred.
