The Toyota Land Cruiser Diesel 60 Series

I am a dealer of classic and collectible cars as well as a life-long 4x4 enthusiast. After meeting a Japanese vehicle exporter through a mutual friend, I became an importer of rare and unique 4x4's. I specialize in Toyota Land Cruisers and other Toyota 4x4's. I imported this well-maintained, low-mileage HJ60 in April. Outside of the US, the diesel Land Cruisers are legendary vehicles, well-known for offroad capability and unmatched reliability and durability. Now that these vehicles are past the 25-year-old limit, we can enjoy them here in the states. It is 100% legal to own and drive in all 50 states.

eBay requires a 17-digit VIN in the listing, the actual VIN for this HJ60 is HJ60039833. It was produced for the Japanese Domestic Market and does not have a 17-digit VIN. The original VIN plate reading HJ60039833 is still fixed in the factory location on the engine firewall. This VIN is also stamped into the frame behind the driver side front wheel. The Missouri title and customs documentation all match this VIN. This vehicle can be legally registered and driven in all 50 US States.

Low-Mileage, Original Condition

This HJ60 is a low-mileage, well-maintained vehicle. The photos show the condition and tell the story. The body has a few paint chips, scratches and dings as might be expected from a 27-year old vehicle. Please view the complete set of photos to see the complete condition. There is a small rust spot on the driver side door skin. This can be seen in detail in the full set of photos. There is some surface rust on a few additional spots as can be seen in the photos.

The interior is in excellent condition, and appears nearly like-new. All the gauges and interior lights work. The heat and A/C both work properly. The A/C was inspected by a professional shop and converted to R134a. The original radio has been removed.

See the complete set of photos to review the vehicle's condition. There is a 24v-12v converter that came with the vehicle.

This HJ60 is loaded with options including:

  • 4.0L Diesel
  • 5-Speed Manual
  • Factory PTO Winch
  • Power Brakes
  • Power Steering
  • Power Sunroof
  • Factory A/C
  • Tilt Steering Column
  • 3.70:1 Axle Ratio

The 2H diesel engine works flawlessly, and you can expect to get 22-25 MPG during normal driving. The manual transmission passed all service inspections, and shifts smoothly. The differentials and transfer case had clean fluid, free of any indication of problems. The tires are solid with excellent tread. See the full list of everything inspected and serviced in the section below. This HJ60 is a great vehicle for driving around town or on the highway. The iconic Land Cruiser appearance and side stripe make this a unique and attention-grabbing vehicle.

This HJ60 has only 66,877 original miles! That's 107,672 KMs.

Owning a Right-Hand-Drive Import

First, this is a 100% legal and documented import vehicle. I have copies of all the customs, EPA, DOT and import paperwork that go with the vehicle to the new owner. This HJ60 has been titled in Missouri, and can be legally titled and driven in all 50 states. Replacement parts and accessories are generally available to ensure a long life of service. Driving a right-hand-drive vehicle is not nearly as difficult as it might first appear. After a few minutes, any driver can become comfortable with driving "on the wrong side." The uniqueness of this setup starts conversations and turns heads everywhere you go.

Toyota builds world's first 'outdoor website' for RAV4 promo

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

This whole thing started with the premise that Toyota's target RAV4 buyers are people who spend their time cycling, hiking, and generally not in front of computer screens. These people are therefore not able to benefit from the full website experience that Toyota has built for the RAV4. We should clarify that the video below is for Toyota South Africa, and maybe RAV4 buyers there really are the disgustingly outdoorsy ideal that us bacon-eaters are not living up to.
Toyota's agency partner, Hello Computer, set up a 1.8-kilometer track at a cycle park that replicated sections of the automaker's website with real physical displays and interactive feedback. Riders were asked to leave their mouses and hit the trail on a mountain bike to experience the RAV4 Outdoor Website and learn about the vehicle.
That seems like a lot of effort for something that's available on the smartphones of these hyper-active people who aren't in front of computers, but hooray for creatively conquering a problem that didn't exist. Hey, let's not be complete wet blankets - maybe some of the cyclists that ran the Toyota gauntlet got a RAV4 for their to- and fro-ing after the experience. Check out the video of the outdoor website below.

Drive like a prince: Join us for a walk through Monaco's car collection

Fri, Dec 29 2023

Small, crowded, and a royal pain in the trunk lid to drive into during rush hour, Monaco sounds like an improbable location for a huge car museum. And yet, this tiny city-state has been closely linked to car culture for over a century. It hosts two major racing events every year, many of its residents would qualify for a frequent shopper card if Rolls-Royce issued one, and Prince Rainier III began assembling a collection of cars in the late 1950s. He opened his collection to the public in 1993 and the museum quickly turned into a popular tourist attraction. The collection continued to grow after his death in April 2005; it moved to a new facility located right on Hercules Port in July 2022. Monaco being Monaco, you'd expect to walk into a room full of the latest, shiniest, and most powerful supercars ever to shred a tire. That's not the case: while there is no shortage of high-horsepower machines, the first cars you see after paying ˆ10 (approximately $11) to get in are pre-war models. In that era, the template for the car as we know it in 2023 hadn't been created, so an eclectic assortment of expensive and dauntingly experimental machines roamed whatever roads were available to them. One is the Leyat Helica, which was built in France in 1921 with a 1.2-liter air-cooled flat-twin sourced from the world of aviation. Fittingly, the two-cylinder spun a massive, plane-like propeller. Government vehicles get a special spot in the museum. They range from a Cadillac Series 6700 with an amusing blend of period-correct French-market yellow headlights and massive fins to a 2011 Lexus LS 600h with a custom-made transparent roof panel that was built by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet for Prince Albert II's wedding. Here's where it all gets a little weird: you've got a 1952 Austin FX3, a Ghia-bodied 1959 Fiat 500 Jolly, a 1960 BMW Isetta, and a 1971 Lotus Seven. That has to be someone's idea of a perfect four-car garage.  One of the most significant cars in the collection lurks in the far corner of the main hall, which is located a level below the entrance. At first glance, it's a kitted-out Renault 4CV with auxiliary lights, a racing number on the front end, and a period-correct registration number issued in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of France. It doesn't look all that different than the later, unmodified 4CV parked right next to it. Here's what's special about it: this is one of the small handful of Type 1063 models built by Renault for competition.

Detroit 3 to implement delayed unified towing standards for 2015

Tue, Feb 11 2014

Car buyers have a responsibility to be well-informed consumers. That's not always a very simple task, but some guidelines are self-evident. If you live in a very snowy climate, you generally know a Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro might not be as viable a vehicle choice as an all-wheel drive Explorer or Traverse, for example. If you want a fuel-efficient car, it's generally a good idea to know the difference between a diesel and a hybrid. But what if it's kind of tough to be an informed consumer? What if the information you need is more difficult to come by, or worse, based on different standards for each vehicle? Well, in that case, you might be a truck shopper. For years, customers of light-duty pickups have had to suffer through different ratings of towing capacities for each brand. For 2015 model year trucks, though, that will no longer be a problem. According to Automotive News, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler Group have announced that starting with next year's models, a common standard will be used to measure towing capacity. The Detroit Three will join Toyota, which adopted the Society of Automotive Engineers' so-called SAE J2807 standards way back in 2011. The standard was originally supposed to be in place for MY2013, but concerns that it would lower the overall stated capacity for trucks led Detroit automakers to pass. Ford originally passed, claiming it'd wait until its new F-150 was launched to adopt the new standards, leading GM and Ram to follow suit. Nissan, meanwhile, has said it will adopt the new standards as its vehicles are updated, meaning the company's next-generation Titan should adhere to the same tow ratings as its competitors. While the adoption of SAE J2807 will be helpful for light-duty customers, those interested in bigger trucks will still be left with differing standards. There is no sign of the new tow standards being adopted for the heavy-duty market.
