1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40.  Fuel Injected (Howell).

This FJ40 really is special.  The Freeborn Red (T-309) really turns the heads. The straight 6-cyl runs like a champ - especially with the added fuel injection package.

About this restoration.  All windows, hinges, doors, body parts, etc. were all disassembled and sent to the sand blaster.  Upon return from the sandblaster, every piece was sanded, then etching primer was applied, then sanded again.  Then filler primer was added.  Then sanded.  Then a second coat of filler primer was added.  Then sanded.  Then the painter applied a seal coat and sanded again.  Then painted.

The FJ40 includes the hard top, hard front and rear doors, and soft front doors.

This is a full restoration frame-on.  I can't think of anything I would add at this point.  I can't possibly think of all the items I added to this vehicle so here's a summary:
  • New Freeborn Red T-309 paint.  (professionally painted - not a home job like some).
  • New CoolCruisers front fenders.
  • New CoolCruisers rear quarter panels.
  • Nearly every bolt on the body of this vehicle has been replaced with stainless steel hardware.
  • Rhino lined interior (also red).
  • Newly upholstered front seats (also done professionally).
  • CoolCruisers rear jump seat covers.
  • CoolCruisers new seat belts - front and rear.
  • CoolCruisers locking center console.
  • CoolCruiser side mirrors.
  • Old Man Emu 2.5" spring lift.
  • Con-Ferr shackles & shocks.
  • Brand new (less than 20 miles) BFG MT's 33x10.50 x 15.
  • CoolCruisers rear floor mat, emblems, lights, hard top headliner, weatherstripping, door guards, vent window guards, bumperettes, dash cover, etc. etc. etc...
  • There is a working stereo in the center console lock box.
  • Original jack, jack rods, Toyota tool bag.
  • All glass is clear and operable.
  • Custom front bumper that is winch ready.
Overall condition:  The engine runs great.  Transmission and t-case move easily in and out of gears.  Brakes are strong including a working e-brake.  Steering is tight.  All rust has been removed and replaced with new parts where possible.  Keep in mind I don't do this for a living.  The cruiser is restored to the best of my ability but I would never represent that it is perfect.  If you want perfection buy from ICON or CoolCruisers or one of the professional restoration companies that charge $50k or more.  Thanks.

Conditions of sale:  Please email or call with questions before you bid.  Please don't bid if you're not willing to close the transaction.  No PayPal!  (They only protect the buyer).  I require $1000 deposit via check, cashiers check, cash or wire transfer within 24 hours of the end of the auction.  Once I receive the deposit, I will overnight the clear title to you.  Once you receive the title you need to pay the balance promptly.  I will keep the FJ until you arrange shipping or arrange a time to pick it up.  Test drives are welcomed.  Vehicle is sold As-Is.  I also reserve the right to terminate this auction if I receive an offer that I will accept or if someone locally buys it.  I respond to text and calls immediately.  Answering emails make take a day or so.  (Dan 801-556-9399)  Thank you and good luck!

Old Toyota Camry Hybrid batteries find new life in Yellowstone

Fri, Jun 6 2014

Beginning this fall, used hybrid batteries that would otherwise be recycled will get a second life in Yellowstone National Park. 208 nickel-metal hydride batteries are being retired from the Toyota Camry Hybrids they once helped power and will become part of an off-the-grid energy system at Yellowstone's remote Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus. The Lamar campus provides field seminars and other education and research in the northeastern corner of the park. The energy stored in the battery packs will come from solar panels and micro-hydro turbines. The total storage capacity of the batteries is 85 kWh, which is sufficient to provide plenty of emissions-free power to the five buildings at the field campus. Toyota says this program essentially doubles the life of the batteries that are no longer suitable for driving. It's great to see the batteries get another life cycle before recycling, especially in a place where wild animals easily outnumbers the cars. The battery project is part of a larger partnership between Toyota and Yellowstone. Toyota has previously donated a RAV4 and $50,000 to support sustainability projects at the park. In addition to the energy system being implemented at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch, Toyota has taken part in similar energy projects. Beginning last year, Toyota dealers in Japan have been using hybrid batteries for power storage. Also, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama is testing a system to use hybrid batteries to power operations and for emergency backup power. Learn more in the press release from Toyota below. Buffalo and Bears and Batteries – Oh My! Toyota Brings Power to Yellowstone National Park June 04, 2014 Yellowstone...Where the Deer and the Antelope and the Prius Play Torrance, Calif. (June 4, 2014) – The nation's oldest National Park is ready for some new power. Toyota Camry hybrid batteries will soon power the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus in Yellowstone National Park. It's a new lease on life for the batteries and new, zero emission, energy option for the Park. Now that's a "bear-able" solution! The stationary distributed energy system will feature 208 used Camry Hybrid nickel-metal hydride battery packs and a total storage capacity of 85 kWh, more than enough pluck to power the five buildings on the Ranch field campus.

2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro

Thu, 23 Oct 2014

Despite the earnest efforts of Japanese automakers like Toyota and Nissan, the American pickup truck scene remains wholly dominated by the likes of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. This is not news. Part of the reason is because of the sheer number of variants offered by US automakers - everything from work-spec base trucks to house-leveling heavy duty models can be had, with a seemingly endless combination of engines, cab sizes, bed lengths and trim levels. It's a hugely profitable business, and though the Japanese automakers still offer competitive fullsize trucks, in terms of sheer volume, they simply don't compete.
But American pickups aren't just about work; there's a huge play aspect involved, too. Look at the desert-storming Ford F-150 SVT Raptor or the Ram Power Wagon - these butch trucks are built with superb off-road prowess in mind, and Detroit's Japanese rivals have once again largely been silent in this segment. Until now.
Introduced at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, Toyota now offers the TRD Pro series of models that, in addition to the crazy-orange Tundra seen here, includes the smaller Tacoma pickup and 4Runner SUV. And this isn't just some pretty appearance package, either - there's honest-to-goodness capability baked into all of the TRD Pro models. Intriguing, for sure, so I recently spent a weekend with the big boy Tundra to see what's what.

2023 Japan Mobility Show Editors' Picks

Tue, Oct 31 2023

No, it's no longer called the Tokyo Motor Show, but the Japan Mobility Show is still in Tokyo and it still has to do with motors. In fact, with the rise of EVs, it's more of a motor show than ever before. And there were an astounding number of motors (and engines) to see, or at least concepts that hypothetically have them. Truly, we haven't seen a turnout this amazing since before the pandemic.  As such, the 2023 Japan Mobility Show featured plenty of machines that could, and did, snag points from our editors. And yet, even with the massive field, one car, unequivocally, stole our hearts. Read on to see our favorites.   Toyota Land Cruiser Se concept View 4 Photos 5. (Tie) Toyota Land Cruiser Se  While this concept is not quite the off-roader that the Land Cruiser is known to be, a street-focused electric SUV seems like a fine fit for the Toyota portfolio. It's hard to imagine we won't see an electric Land Cruiser come to production one day, filling out that as-yet underrepresented three-row EV segment. Give us an even more rugged version, and we'll be happy — Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder   Subaru Sport Mobility Concept View 7 Photos 5. (Tie) Subaru Sport Mobility I'm still waiting for a fun, electric sport coupe, and as much as I enjoy the likes of the rear-drive BRZ, I could have some serious fun in something like this all-wheel-drive Subaru Sport Mobility year round. I could fill that hole in my heart left by my '04 WRX. — Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder   Toyota EPU concept View 4 Photos 4. Toyota EPU You know what I like? Useful, funky little vehicles. The Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz fit that bill well, and it seems a lot of other people like them, too, based on demand. You know what I also like? EVs. You know what combines those two things? The Toyota EPU. Assuming it was priced fairly reasonably (well below $40,000 is what I'm thinking), I would seriously be looking at getting one. I also seriously hope that Toyota's seriously looking at launching this, because it seems like a seriously great package. Seriously. — News Editor Joel Stocksdale   Mitsubishi D:X Concept View 8 Photos 3. Mitsubishi D:X Concept We sure do wish Mitsubishi sold the Delica here in the United States. We've long been fans of the van, which initially was sold in rear-wheel-drive form but adopted four-wheel drive in the early 1980s, and judging by the numbers we see imported to the States, we're not the only ones.
