78 is a coveted year, has a rebuilt stock 2F, power steering, ARB locker, all original sheet metal, small 2.5 lift, 32 in new tires.  Value wise 76-83 years are the most desired with 78-83 being the most rare and sought after.

4.2 liter engine

K&N filters

Air filter part number: E-2940

Oil filter: HP-6001 or PS-3001

Bought from a gentlemen who owns a FJ40 restoration shop and offer a few choice Cruisers for sale each year.  This original paint FJ40 is investment grade, the model year is rare and sought after, and it is completely rust free, with some nice add-ons. He built this FJ40 to be a daily driver; it will drive on the highway at 70mph to your off-road spot, go anywhere off-road, and then drive home.  Simply put, he built this to be an expedition vehicle.

Mechanical: The motor is the stock 2F inline 6 that is a brand new fresh performance build. Toyota power steering, new radiator, new clutch, Optima Yellow Top battery.  Stock rebuilt Toyota 4 speed transmission and transfer case.  The front axle is completely rebuilt with 4.10 gears, ARB locker, new Warn hubs, new ball joints and disc brakes.  It costs a fortune to do an ARB, but it is the best way to lock up your front axle. ARB switches and compressor with hookup for air tools. ARB means you can lock and unlock the differential simply by pressing a switch in the cab. The rear axle is completely rebuilt with a limited slip differential and 4.10 gears.  The limited slip works great on the highway and great off-road.  With available 4 wheel positive traction this FJ40 will go anywhere. Rancho 2 1/2 in lift with dual steering stabilizers and Con-Ferr shackles. New 32 in Radial mud tires, aluminum wheels.  Con-Ferr aux. fuel tank with switch and gauge for the front and rear tank. 37 total gallons.

Body: He bought this FJ40 99.8% rust free. It had a rust spot smaller than a dime on the rear sill that he cut out and replaced with metal. I look at 20 supposed rust free cruisers to buy 1 or 2.  A few spots that were peeling were touched up.  All the panels are original to this truck, that means it lines up perfect, all the doors are closed with 1 finger. The original paint looks fantastic. Of course 33 year old paint has scratches and chips in it. The interior is a thin coat of linex for durability.  The front seats are out of a newer 4-Runner and much more comfortable than stock.  The rear jump seats and roll bar are there and in excellent shape. The front bumper is set up for a Warn 8274 winch.

Performance

The 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser models came with two available engines including an inline, six-cylinder, 4.2-liter engine came standard with an overhead valve, ohv, carburated design. This particular motor was named the 2F engine, as it was the successor to the F engine. Putting out an advertised 125 horsepower and 200 foot-pounds of torque, this gasoline-powered motor featured larger bored cylinders than the F series, giving it more performance for a similar sized component. An inline, four-cylinder, diesel-powered motor was offered to consumers in the BJ series vehicles. This 3.0-liter engine was similar to the gasoline version in that it was a single ohv design with similar piston stroke and cylinder bore lengths, yet power output was only about 80 horsepower and 141 foot-pounds of torque. As a diesel engine, the fuel efficiency was much greater than that of the petrol gasoline engines.
Drivetrain

The base transmission in 1978 model Land Cruisers was the Toyota H41, four-speed standard, manual. The transfer case featured a low gear ratio of 1.959:1. With diesel engine equipped models, consumers could opt for the H42, four-speed, standard transmission, increasing fuel efficiency with lower gear ratios throughout each gear. The paired transfer case to the H42 also had a gear ratio of 1.959:1, the same as the H41 transmission. However, the H41 transmission saw a gear ratio of 4.925:1 in first gear, while the H42 standards started at 3.55:1. These numbers relate to the number of revolutions performed by the engine for every revolution of the transmission. The lower gear ratio indicates quicker acceleration and more power achieved.
Axles and Suspension

Front and rear axles on Land Cruisers in 1978 were manufactured by Toyota Motor company itself. With average axle ratios of 4.111:1 in most models, a 4.875 gear ratio was offered in the BJ-44 models that had the H42 manual transmissions. The front and rear suspension of all model Land Cruisers in 1978 was a basic semi-elliptic leaf spring design. Each spring is mounted to the frame by means of a shackle, yet also attaches to the axle at the given point of contact. Most models of Land Cruisers featured both front and rear drum brakes, but the BJ-44 models with diesel engines had ventilated front disc brakes.

Toyota C-HR hybrid crossover coupe concept leak ahead of Paris

Sun, 21 Sep 2014

Last week, Toyota previewed an upcoming concept called the C-HR and promised it would debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. It didn't say much more or give us anything beyond a silhouette and the shape of the lights, but here we have the first images of the finalized form.
The C-HR envisions a hybrid crossover coupe with angular styling that looks ready to take on the Nissan Juke. It's far sportier than a RAV4, and looks closer to how we'd imagine the next-generation Scion FR-S would look like if it were riding on a jacked-up suspension - with some show car elements thrown in for good measure, like a gloating roof, radical lighting and the usual absence of door handles and usable wing mirrors.
Of course, this being a Toyota concept, it packs a hybrid powertrain, although specifications did not leak out along with the images. Overall the form looks pretty striking, if decidedly unsubtle. We'll look forward to bringing you more as the Paris show rapidly approaches.

Toyota's HaMo urban mobility carsharing program comes to France

Mon, Sep 22 2014

We're guessing no one's nuts enough to try to take one of Toyota's three-wheeled leaning electric i-Road vehicles up into the French Alps. Still, the town of Grenoble, France, which sits at the foot of the mountains, has received 35 of those vehicles as part of a carsharing pilot program. Toyota's thrown in 35 four-wheel Auto Body COMS vehicles into the program as well. Grenoble, which is about 200 miles north of Marseille, was presumably chosen because of existing carsharing programs run by Cite-lib. This program, dubbed "Cite lib by Ha:mo," goes a little more futuristic, though, as it's part of what Toyota calls its "Ha:mo" plan (Ha:mo is short for "harmonious mobility"). The program will run for three years and includes 27 charging stations near bus lines and train stations. The public will be charged anywhere from three to 19 euros ($3.80 to $24.50 US) to use the vehicles for between 15 minutes and four hours. The good news is that drivers can pick up the vehicles in one location and drop them off in another. Toyota started testing the i-Road vehicles in Toyota City, Japan, this past March. The trike is about three feet wide and has a top speed of 28 miles per hour. Check out Toyota's press release below and read AutoblogGreen's "First Drive" impressions of the i-Road here. "Cite lib by Ha:mo", a New Type of Urban Mobility Based on Ultra-Compact Electric Vehicles Connected to Public Transport, Launches in Grenoble, France This innovative car-sharing service aims to prepare the City and agglomeration of Grenoble for electric mobility within a comprehensive multi-modal mobility plan. The three-year trial project brings together the competencies and services of five partners: the City of Grenoble, the Metro Area, French electricity company EDF and its affiliate Sodetrel, Toyota, and Cite lib, the local car-sharing operator. 35 three-wheel Toyota i-ROAD and 35 four-wheel Toyota Auto Body COMS will be available for short city trips in 27 charging stations installed and operated by Sodetrel - including for one-way trips from one station to another. A total of 120 charging points for the project and 41 for other plug-in vehicles will be added to the city's transport infrastructure. A simple pricing plan dubbed "3, 2, 1 euros" for respectively the first, second and third 15-minute increments will be proposed to Grenoble citizens.

Toyota and Suzuki are looking at an R&D partnership because they admit they're behind

Wed, Oct 12 2016

The Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Osamu Suzuki, and the President of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, have convened at Toyota's Tokyo offices to declare plans to join hands regarding research and development. According to Toyoda, Toyota "hasn't been good at creating alliances," and its partnership with the small carmaker Daihatsu has been the most well-known collaboration so far. Perhaps the comment has a tinge of regret from Toyota and GM's NUMMI days in Fremont, especially as the statement released by Toyota says that "Toyota is conscious of the fact that it may be behind competitors in North America and Europe when it comes to the establishment of standardizations and partnership with other companies." But as different technologies advance at breakneck speed and it is difficult for companies both big and small to stay competitive, let alone ahead of the game, Toyota is accepting the need for collaboration. Toyoda referred to passenger safety, environmental issues, automated driving, and hydrogen technology, all of which are key challenges for any carmaker looking to stay relevant, and all expensive to experiment with. Spreading the cost over more vehicles should help. "We received an offer from Suzuki regarding collaboration possibilities on advanced and future technologies such as in information technology. Suzuki made a frank proposal to us, and in understanding that Toyota is facing the challenges which I had mentioned earlier, we thought that with the relationship between both companies, there is an opportunity for a business partnership to help solve such challenges. As such, we decided to explore such possibilities together," said Toyoda. In the future, Daihatsu will still be Toyota's tool in emerging markets, but now Toyota could have access to Suzuki's small-car know-how. Osamu Suzuki acknowledges that "Suzuki's current business focuses on minivehicles in Japan and India," as Suzuki withdrew from the US and Canada in 2013. A joint effort will help Suzuki remain relevant, and as a manufacturer of predominantly small vehicles it has been focusing on competitive pricing more than cutting edge technology. Related Video:
