Toyota unintended acceleration lawsuit settled for $16M
Mon, 08 Apr 2013Slowly, the many loose threads still dangling after the unintended acceleration issue Toyota faced a few years ago are being resolved. The Orange County District Attorney's office was believed to be the first DA's office to take Toyota to court, its suit alleging that Toyota knew its cars had defects and continued to sell them. The suit sought to "permanently enjoin Toyota from continued unlawful, unfair, deceptive, and fraudulent business practices as it pertains to both consumers and competitors" and asked for $2,500 "for every violation of the Unfair Business Practices Act," plus costs.
That suit has now been settled, Toyota - without admitting fault or wrongdoing - agreeing to pay $16 million to the county. Half of the money will go to the Orange County Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership, another four million dollars to the OC DA's office to investigate economic crime, the remaining four million being used to pay for the case.
Scion pondering move upmarket?
Mon, 01 Apr 2013Scion is simultaneously celebrating its ten-year anniversary with the 10 Series models and trying to figure out what to do with itself over the next ten years. Once a go-to consideration for young, first-time buyers who wanted something cool and different, in 2013 it has a model everyone is still talking about in the FR-S, a model few are still talking about in the iQ, and three models in between in the tC, xB and xD that make everyone wonder, "What happened?"
Automotive News spoke to Toyota's North American CEO, Jim Lentz - he was the VP in charge of Scion when it launched - about the options, and Lentz said one of them could be a move upmarket to challenge the established luxury brands that are moving downmarket. "There's going to be a big need in the $25,000 range for a fun-to-drive, nice-looking, value-oriented product," he said, and the FR-S, which starts at $25,255, could provide the platform for Scion to climb up a notch or two in price and perception. An idea like this could conceivably work in tandem with a proposal to move entry-level Scion products over to the Toyota brand - but remember, this is all just ideas on a whiteboard at the moment.
As opposed to an "entry-luxury fighter," the brand could swing back to the other option that was considered when it was formed, directly challenging the Korean makes that have usurped its cachet with first-time buyers. Lentz said Scion could go either way, and the tone of the piece seems to indicate that the final direction is still a ways away from being resolved.
Toyota getting into 3D printing with i-Road in Tokyo
Mon, May 11 2015Think of it as Pimp My Ride for the Japanese green concept car set. Toyota is further publicizing its funky, really skinny, leaning i-Road electric concept vehicle by putting on a contest that, among other things, encourages folks to customize parts of the car's surface via 3D printing. Hey, it is a really small car. Toyota's Open Road Project in Tokyo, which will last about a year and will let about 100 participants work with 10 vehicles, also includes a component that lets contestants find the most creative parking spots by seeking out "small unused spaces with access to plug sockets" (we're sure Tokyo is full of them). What grabbed us, though, was the possibility of printing out panels for a three-wheeled car that's less than eight feet long and less than three feet wide. Earlier this year, we reported that Toyota would add five i-Road vehicles to a Tokyo carsharing pilot project. Toyota's unusual promotions for the admittedly unusual concept two-seater date back to early 2013, when the Japanese automaker featured a video of four i-Roads dancing their way through a sun-kissed Mediterranean village. Meantime, take a look at Toyota's press release below, and get more information on the project here.
