2008 Toyota 4Runner SR5, 4x4, V6.

Clean Carfax. Never any paint or body issues. No accidents.

Recently spent $1,000 on New Michelin LTX MS2 tires. Added front end leveling kit. (Most 4Runners look like the front sags, I didn't like that look).

Miles 97, xxx.

The Toyota 4Runner is offered in V6, and with four-wheel drive. V6 models are powered by a 4.0L DOHC engine making 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Engine has an intelligent variable valve timing system, to improve response at low and mid revs, and includes a five-speed automatic transmission that has an adaptable shift logic for conditions such as towing.  Vehicle has a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip center differential with locking feature, along with a low range for steep off-road inclines. Offers 4WD Low, shift on the fly up to 55 mph.   All 4WD models get several electronic aids. Downhill assist control (DAC) helps with low-speed descents while off-roading, while hill-start assist control (HAC) helps keep the vehicle from rolling back while starting on an incline or slippery surface.Toyota's VSC electronic stability control, which helps maintain control in a slide by braking the individual wheels, is standard on the 4Runner, along with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. The 4Runner has truck-based underpinnings, with body-on-frame construction and full-length boxed-section frame rails. The 4Runner comes with seating for five. Second row is 60/40-split and folds forward.  The base SR5 includes automatic climate control, cruise control, a multi-information display, remote keyless entry, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. SR5 Sport models add steering-wheel audio controls, tilt steering. The SR5 has a chrome grille and trim, fog lamps, black running board, and alloy wheels.  Major options include a power moonroof with automatic wind deflector, roof rack and Class III tow package.  XM Radio.  The spring on the spring-loaded door of the change compartment next to the gear shift is broken and needs to be replaced.  I leave it open so it has never bothered me.

Contact me for questions.  These are selling (not advertised) at dealers for above $20,000.  Reserve is a few thousand below that.

Eiji Toyoda dead at 100

Tue, 17 Sep 2013

Toyota has had number of chiefs over its 76-year history, but none ever served as long as Eiji Toyoda. The younger cousin of the company's founder served as president of the automaker from 1967 to 1982 and as chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation for another ten years following the unification of the manufacturing and sales divisions.
During his 25 years at the helm, Eiji Toyoda (pictured above in 1967) was credited with establishing the company's headquarters in Toyota City, spearheading the development of the Prius, expanding production overseas for the first time, launching the Lexus brand and turning Toyota from a minor player into one of the largest automakers in the world.
Even after his retirement in 1992, he remained an honorary chairman and close advisor to his successors, and chaired the company's museum. He died of heart failure, ending a 100-year life that started on September 12, 1913, before the company that bore his family's name (albeit slightly modified) had even started building automatic looms, let alone automobiles. We extend our condolences to the Toyoda family and our congratulations on an accomplished life.

Solid-state batteries: Why Toyota's plans could be a game-changer for EVs

Tue, Jul 25 2017

Word out of Japan today is that Toyota is working on launching a new solid-state battery for electric vehicles that will put it solidly in the EV game by 2022. Which leads to a simple question: What is a solid-state battery, and why does it matter? Back in February, John Goodenough observed, "Cost, safety, energy density, rates of charge and discharge and cycle life are critical for battery-driven cars to be more widely adopted." And risking a bad pun on his surname, he seemed to be implying that all of those characteristics weren't currently good enough in autos using lithium-ion batteries. This comment is relevant because Goodenough, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin - it so happens, he turns 95 today - is the co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, the type of battery that is pretty much the mainstay of current electric vehicles. And he and a research fellow at U of T were announcing they'd developed a solid-state battery, one that has improved energy density (which means a car so equipped can drive further) and can be recharged more quickly and more often (a.k.a., "long cycle life") than a lithium-ion battery. (Did you ever notice that with time your iPhone keeps less of a charge than it did back when it was shiny and new? That's because it has a limited cycle life. Which is one thing when you're talking about a phone. And something else entirely when it involves a whole car.) What's more, there is reduced mass for a solid-state battery. And there isn't the same safety concern that exists with li-ion batteries vis-a- vis conflagration (which is why at airplane boarding gates they say they'll check your carryon as long as you remove all lithium-ion batteries). Lithium-ion batteries may be far more advanced than the lead-acid batteries that are under the hood of essentially every car that wasn't built in Fremont, Calif., but as is the case with those heavy black rectangles, li-ion batteries contain a liquid. In the lithium-ion battery, the liquid, the electrolyte, moves the lithium ions from the negative to the positive side (anode to cathode) of the battery. In a solid-state design, there is no liquid sloshing around, which also means that there's no liquid that would freeze at low operating temperatures. What Toyota is using for its solid-state battery is still unknown, as is the case for the solid-state batteries that Hyundai is reportedly working on for its EVs.

Lexus, Mazda win KBB 5-Year Cost To Own Awards

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

We focus a lot on what new cars are like to drive, but it's difficult on a one-week loan to really get a sense of what a car is like to live with. Sure, we try to recreate that sense with our long-term vehicles, but even after a year, it's impossible to know fully learn about a car, particularly in terms of reliability and cost of repairs. For 2014 model year vehicles, Kelley Blue Book has put together a list of the most affordable vehicles over a five-year period.
At the tippy top of the list are Mazda and Lexus, with the Zoom-Zoom automaker winning the award for best non-luxury brand. Lexus, meanwhile, was the most affordable luxury marque over a five-year period. It's interesting to note, though, that not a single Mazda won its segment in this year's awards.
General Motors did quite well, taking eight segments, including both the subcompact and plug-in segments, with the gas-powered Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV. The Chevy Camaro SS and ZL1 took the high-performance car award. Toyota was well represented, with five winners split between the main brand (Corolla, Prius C and Tacoma) and Lexus (LS and RX).
