After 9 years of lj10.com we have found and contacted the original owner of IEC, the importer of LJ10's and 20's We learned that there were 3,300 to 3,500 LJ10 and LJ20's sold by IEC up till 1974 when they sold to USA Suzuki which after that politics and emission standards stopped the sales of LJ's until the Samurai. At one point Suzuki was going to put a 800CC 4Cyl made by Daihatsu into the LJ20's but never did. "Tacoma Wheel" company are the designers of the white aftermarket wheels on the LJ20 that IEC sold as an option and "House of Steel" out of San Diego made the Spare Tire Carriers. The first year IEC sold LJ's approximately 175 rigs were sold, 800 were sold by the second year, 2,500 by the third and then 3,500 in their fourth and final year when USA Suzuki saw that there Was a market for the LJ's, they didn't think there would be in the USA and so did not want to import them and that is when IEC stepped in and well you know the rest of the story. Mexico bought a few LJ's from IEC.

THIS LITTLE LJ10 IS VERY ORIGINAL WITH SOFT TOP AND DOORS, WHICH ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1970 is the first year for the LJ it was called the LJ10 also known as Jimny or Brute IV, LJ stands for Light Jeep, the name Jimny came from a misunderstanding of what was told to some Japanese Suzuki delegates visiting Scotland for the first time. they decided to call their new jeep Jimmy, but somewhere between Scotland and Japan  they lost the translation and so they called it Jimny, it was the only 4x4 mass-produced in Japan's domestic mini-car category, the engine size, length and width were regulated in Japan by the Japanese Transportation Guideline in which to be classified as a Mini Car they had to stay within the specified size, and to keep within the length they had to place the Spare Tire behind the driver seat. They also added a third seat behind the passenger seat. The LJ10 came with 16” wheels and tires, horizontal style grille, air-cooled, 4 speed, fold down windshield and only came in a soft-top version. 1972 Suzuki introduced the LJ20 it had a water-cooled engine with 28 horsepower @ 5500 rpm the grille was changed to a vertical style and you could get it in two versions, the LJ20O the O stands for Open or the LJ20V in which the V stands for Van and also had only 15” wheels and tires, if you have or ever seen a LJ20V you’ll noticed they have the windshield tie down “loops” for a fold down windshield but the V doesn’t have a fold down windshield, the reason is they make the same fenders for the O as they do for the V. Suzuki did not only make jeeps with this type of engine etc. they also made what they call a “Carry” L40 which was a enclosed pickup, a L41 which is the same as the L40 but has fold-down bed sides, then the L40V which looks just like a mini van (wow the first true mini van). The LJ20 stayed in production till 1976, LJ's stopped coming into the USA around 1974 possibly due to the US being more strict on emissions. Next was the LJ50 and LJ55 also known as Jimny 550, the engine was changed to a 539 cc 3 cylinder 2 stroke with a horsepower rated 35 @ 5500 rpm, they were also slightly bigger in size because of the lift on the Mini-Car guidelines. 1977 brought the LJ80; LJ81 is the pickup model, they had a 4 cylinder 4-stroke with an overhead cam 797 cc engine with a 42 horsepower @ 5500 rpm. In 1980 the SJ10 came about and then came the SJ410 and SJ413. Up till The Samurai none of these were exported by Suzuki to the USA, the Intercontinental Equipment Corporation brought the most part of the LJ’s to America. (but attempts to find IEC and it's owners has been futile)

Mitsubishi CEO vows to stay in US on heels of Suzuki's departure

Wed, 07 Nov 2012

By now, you're surely aware that Suzuki is pulling out of the US market. It was a bit of a foregone conclusion to most who've been paying attention to the automotive realm, but it still sent a small shockwave through the industry. And one of the most oft-heard retorts goes something like this: "Next up: Mitsubishi."
It's easy to understand why many question Mitsubishi's existence in the States. After all, now that Suzuki is gone, Mitsubishi is the Japanese automaker with the fewest sales in America. Furthermore, the automaker's market share has dropped from .7 percent to just .4 percent after seeing sales fall 29 percent to 50,103 units through October.
In any case, Mitsubishi fans needn't worry. Speaking to Automotive News, Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko said, "We have no intention whatsoever of withdrawing from the US market." That's about as clear as clear can get. It's also worth mentioning that Gayu Uesugi was just named chairman of Mitsubishi Motors North America, and his main responsibility will be to revitalize the brand in the US.

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Geo Metro LSi Convertible

Sat, Oct 2 2021

Beginning in 1985, General Motors brought over Suzuki Cultuses and sold them here with Chevrolet Sprint badges, which Americans bought in surprisingly large numbers (considering the crash in fuel prices around that time). When the time came for The General to launch a separate brand selling rebadged Japanese machines— Geo— the second-generation Cultus became the Geo Metro. Sporting a fuel-sipping three-cylinder engine, the Metro mostly sold to penny-pinchers interested only in cheap commutingÂ… but GM decided to make a fun convertible version, anyway. Here's one of those cars, finally retired near Denver at age 30. The 1991 Metro hierarchy started with the El Cheapo base and XFi models, at $6,795 (about $13,810 today), then moved up to the better-equipped LSi. The LSi hatchback coupe cost $7,795 ($15,840 in 2021), while the LSi convertible stood at the top of the Metro pyramid at $9,740 ($19,795 now). Believe it or not, Ford managed to undercut the 1991 Metro with its Mazda-built Festiva, priced at $6,620 in its cheapest form. You could buy a Suzuki-badged version of this car, known as the Swift, and the Swift GT had a screaming four-cylinder engine. 1995 and later Metros also had the option of a four-banger, but a 1.0-liter three-cylinder was the only engine available in the 1991 Geo Metro. If you wanted to get close to 60 highway miles per gallon, the Metro XFi had a specially-tuned 1.0 that delivered, though it sent a mere 49 horsepower to the front wheels (the last new car available in the United States with under 50 horsepower— including highway-legal EVs— was the 1993 Metro XFi, by the way). The engine in today's Junkyard Gem was rated at 55 horses. A five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment in every 1991 Metro, though a thoroughly miserable three-speed slushbox could be had for $465 extra (about $945 today). Because most Metro buyers wanted fuel economy first and foremost, automatic Metros are rare (though I have managed to find one in a boneyard). How many total miles? The five-digit odometer means we'll never know. The 1991 Metro convertible came from Japan, but all the others sold here that year were built in Canada. Today, that plant builds the Chevy Equinox. A new convertible for less than 10 grand was a steal in 1991, when a new Mercury Capri convertible cost $12,588.

Suzuki brought a retro hybrid coupe and an autonomous van concept to Tokyo Motor Show

Tue, Oct 1 2019

Update: More photos and details of these Suzuki concepts have surfaced since their official reveal at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Turns out, the Waku Spo coupe can also be a wagon. We love it. When you swap in the wagon rear end, the rear seat slides back and automatically reclines. All of a sudden, the sporty coupe has turned into a somewhat roomy wagon kei car. Its interior features a fully digital dash that will actually simulate wood grain on the passenger side when in the Normal drive mode. When sport mode is selected, the "wood grain" transforms into a massive screen of dials and vehicle information. The Suzuki Hanare is the van pictured in the gallery and further below. Its drive wheels feature in-wheel electric motors, and the interior is all about customization. The folks in Suzuki's press photos look happy to be hanging out by their Hanares, and we think we'd be pretty happy too. One of the vans has a bar; the other has a massive screen with a map, and the middle van is full of storage for outdoor activity supplies. Lastly, Suzuki showed us the Hustler Concept. It's essentially just a Hustler made to look like an off-road kei car. We're picking up the Jimny vibes Suzuki is laying down. It's wonderfully boxy and features a bevy of neat accessories. Suzuki is celebrating its 100th anniversary at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. To mark the occasion, the company has created two unique concepts that look to the past for style, and the future for powertrain and use cases. One is called the Waku Spo, and the other is the Hanare. The Waku Spo is pictured above, and it's a plug-in hybrid with styling rooted in '60s Japanese cars. It's simple and squared off save for the wide fender flares and charming round headlights. There are dashes of chrome trim around the car and two-tone paint. The fender-mounted rearview cameras are a high-tech twist on a classic Japanese car feature. But if this design doesn't appeal to you, Suzuki says body and interior parts can be quickly switched out so each driver can have a car that's personalized to their tastes. While the Waku Spo is a more traditional, driver-oriented car, the Hanare is more of an autonomous pod. According to Suzuki, Hanare translates to "cottage" and the theme of the van is to be your home away from home. It's meant to be a mobile room to do whatever you want. It also looks like it's intended to be private and secluded, as the only windows are slender pieces that wrap around the roof.
