2001 SUBARU OUTBACK LIMITED WAGON

You are looking at an extremely nice Outback Limited. This is probably one of the nicer 2001 models out there. Body and paint are very nice with minimal scratches, no rust, paint is very good, shines very nicely. The only body repair that has been done to my knowledge is replacement of the front bumper cover. The hood has some "crow's feet" in it, so it may have been repainted in the past. Look at the pictures closely, this car has not been used the way many Outbacks are used.

The interior is nearly mint for its age. The leather is very nice, still pliable, the door panels and dash are nearly perfect, the carpet and mats are very good. Everything works as it should - sunroof, windows, gauges, stereo, alarm, horn, door locks, inside and outside lights, etc.

The wheels are much nicer than you generally see on this generation of Outbacks. Generally corrosion-free, one has some starting under a wheel weight. See pictures.

The entire drivetrain is from a 2004 Legacy, and that is the reason for the salvage title. This drivetrain now has 97,718 miles on it. This drivetrain transplant was done because the previous owner hit something in the roadway and punctured the oil pan. The only other damage was to the radiator support and radiator. The radiator came from the donor car and the support was repaired. The engine and transmission both perform exactly as intended. The transmission shifts properly, and the engine uses little if any oil.

The tires are  HydroEdge Michelins, installed at 94,300 miles. New pads and rotors were recently installed on the front. Rear brakes were good at time of inspection.

Front suspension is in top shape, everything is good, boots not cracked or leaking, recently aligned.

Here is what needs to be done to the car:

The center differential is going bad, causing the typical problems when the wheel is turned all the way left or right, forward or reverse. It binds, it groans, it pops, but anything less than full turns there are no issues.

The head gaskets need replacing. Coolant is apparently leaking into the combustion chambers. A trip of approximately 35-40 miles will empty the reservoir. I check often under the hood of my cars, so this was caught well before there was any overheating. This coolant is NOT leaking to the outside of the engine.

There is a very small oil leak at the rear of the motor, easily fixed when the head gaskets are done.

AC has slow coolant leak. A full charge will last about one season.

Please come inspect this car in person before you bid.
Please do not bid on the car first, then come look at it and decide you don't want it. This is not how it works.
Email me with any questions you have. I will answer them as quickly and honestly as I can.

Again, this is an exceptionally nice Outback for its age and is well worth fixing. I don't think you would find a nicer 2001. This car is very impressive in the winter.

See my feedback and bid with confidence. Car is sold as-is, where-is, with no warranty, implied or stated. Because of the coolant leak, operate this car at your own risk. I would suggest towing it home.

BTW: Subaru's SHARC won the 2012 Design Challenge

Mon, 03 Dec 2012

Part of the festivities that encompass the LA Auto Show is the annual LA Design Challenge. This year's winner was the Subaru Highway Automated Response Concept, or SHARC. It envisioned automated, zero-emission highway patrolling.
The 2012 edition of the challenge was to envision the future of highway patrol in the year 2025. The goal was to conceptualize a vehicle that would account for the needs of "dynamic urban environments." In addition to Subaru's participation in the contest BMW, General Motors, Honda and Mercedes-Benz, all took part in the challenge.
The SHARC is essentially a law enforcement land-drone. It is entirely automated and runs on renewable energy. Subaru envisioned a future where the Hawaiian Islands are connected to each other by a large highway system. Such an expansive area would require considerable manpower to patrol. The concept of an autonomous patrol vehicle would eliminate the need for a good number of full-time personnel.

Some 2019 Subaru Ascent owners will get brand-new cars due to recall [UPDATE]

Wed, Aug 15 2018

UPDATE: After inspection, it turns out that the issue of missing welds on Subaru Ascent models built between July 13 and July 21, 2018, was much smaller than initially thought. A Subaru spokesperson informs us that "none of the customer vehicles included in the recall were affected." According to Subaru, 293 brand-new 2019 Ascent crossovers built between July 13 and July 21, 2018, are missing a series of spot welds on the B-pillar. These welds add strength to the shell of the car right where the rear doors attach, which makes them extremely important to the overall structure of the vehicle. The issue was caused by improper programming of the robots that add these welds as the vehicle rolls down the assembly line. What makes this recall particularly interesting is that 9 of these 293 affected Ascent models are already in the driveways of paying customers, and those owners are going to get brand-new replacement vehicles. The other 284 affected Ascents are either sitting on dealer lots or in transit. All 293 models without the proper B-pillar welds will be destroyed and replaced. If you're the owner of a 2019 Ascent that may be affected by this recall, you can contact your local dealer with your VIN number, or check online to find out if your vehicle is one of the 293 with missing welds. And since it's a very real safety issue, we'd recommend you check your VIN immediately, because the missing welds cannot be identified just by a visual inspection. Related Video:

2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Special Edition shows its shining face to the Detroit crowd

Tue, Jan 13 2015

The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Special Edition is an easy model to spot thanks to its bright Sunrise Yellow paint. However, under the lights at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the shade actually looks a bit darker than the blazing tone from the original photos. Subaru is only making 1,000 of these shining models, and appropriately, they hit the market in the spring when the sun starts shining. Beyond the bright paint, buyers get a Crosstrek with a power moonroof, body-color folding mirrors and blackened headlight bezels. Inside, there's Subie's Starlink infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen and two USB ports. The all-weather package should make things easier on cold days, too, with heated seats and side mirrors, plus a windshield wiper de-icer. The whole package based around the 2.0i Premium trim rings up for $25,290, plus $850 destination and delivery.
