I bought this vehicle from Texas so it is rust free (not like most of our rigs in Minnesota after a few years).  It is in nearly order perfect with a few exceptions:

1.  I bought if from a dealer in Texas off the internet.  It sat buttoned up from September to late March. It arrived poorly detailed.  That isn't a big deal but I was disappointed.  I have gone over this thing thoroughly and cleaned the carpets with a non-allergenic rug cleaner, scrubbed the interior including the headliner, purged the climate system including the evaporator area, and fixed some poorly touched-up small paint chips.  The body is in great shape with the exception of minor chips and a couple small scratches.  The original owner put the 3M protective covering on the hood and mirrors.

2.  The vehicle arrived with the CEL showing an air pump malfunction. They told me it was in perfect working order. They couldn't have missed on this one. I suspect the original owner got an estimate on it and decided to trade it in.  The air pump and valves simply pumps clean air into the exhaust at start up to make the exhaust appear cleaner. Google this (Subaru secondary air pump air valve problems) and you will see many have gone through this. At the time of this posting, I have the valves ordered (Wow! Are they expensive!) and will get this fixed properly.  I can understand the former owner's hesitation if they got an estimate.  If for some reason a code still appears, I will discount or rebate the new owner $200 even after the vehicle is gone.  This should more than pay for a mechanic to look at it.

3.  It sometimes idles a bit rough. It doesn't bother me and I'm fussy. Many postings say this is typical for this engine. Many also say it goes away when the air injections system is fixed.

4.  There is a minor air leak on the driver's side when the vehicle is in a strong cross wind.  I haven't tried to fix it yet.

5.  The tires are on the low end of just okay.  It seems to make sense for the next owner to get exactly the tires needed to match the type of driving that will be done.

Here's what is great:
1.  The body is in very fine shape.  There is one fifty-cent piece sized dent on the front bumper but it has gorgeous paint. I will wax it one more time before shipping or meeting to sell.

2.  I put on a new hitch. I didn't put in the wiring harness yet (I think they are about $35) and take a few minutes to install.

3. Turbos require premium but it's worth it. This thing really has pep!  It cost about $2-$3 a tank more to fill in our area. I have consistently been getting 26 mpg but I do drive the posted speed limits  :)

4. Per the manual, I put in a new timing belt and water pump. I cleaned the injectors. It has new plugs (hard to get at).  The oil will be freshly changed when I sell it.

5.  The interior is in great shape (no tears).  The leather shows some mild signs of wear but everything is quite remarkable given the vehicle is six years old.

I would be willing to Face Time with serious buyers. This can be set up through e-mail. With this, you can get a virtual tour and test drive.  I am busy this time of the year and would need to limit this to only very those who are in the hunt with the bidding.

2014 Subaru Forester scores 5 stars in NHTSA crash test [w/video]

Fri, 23 Aug 2013

Having aced the crash test from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and earning the highest rating of Top Safety Pick+, the 2014 Subaru Forester headed over to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a date with destruction. In the barrage of NHTSA tests, the new Forester met similar results as it did with the IIHS, earning a five-star overall crash rating.
Comparing these number to the previous model, which carried a four-star rating in all areas, the new Forester did much better in the side-impact test to earn a full five stars; frontal and rollover ratings were still at four stars like the old model, but the improved side crashworthiness was enough to gain the NHTSA's highest overall rating. The frontal impact video is posted below, but all the various test videos can be seen on NHTSA's website.

Gymkhana 11 will be hosted by Travis Pastrana

Wed, May 27 2020

Amidst the chaos and tragedy that has proliferated in 2020, American action sports legend Travis Pastrana has had a year of growth. In March, Subaru announced his return as a full-time rally driver, and this week, he announced that he will be the first person to host Gymkhana other than Ken Block. Pastrana has been assigned Gymkhana 11, and he'll be using a tuned Subaru WRX STI as his trusty steed. Block, Pastrana, and both of their families have participated in a fun challenge recently. In early May, Block set the stage at the Hoonigan Racing Division shop in Park City, Utah, with a makeshift Gymkhana GRiD-style course (Gymkhana GRiD was scheduled to return in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic). He used a Can-Am Maverick X3, and his kids and wife filmed him ripping through the course. At the end of the video, he called on Pastrana to attempt a superior answer.   And Pastrana delivered. Using a hot dog suit, a Can-Am Maverick X3, a kids kart, a Subaru WRX STI, and a Harley-Davidson with a sidecar, the Pastranas executed their own course with dirt track jumps, wheelies, burnouts and two-wheel driving. The competition wouldn't be complete without judging, so that was left up to the viewers. In online voting, audiences preferred Pastrana's performance more than Block's video at a 288 votes to 140 votes, as of this writing.  It seems the challenge was a lead-up to this week's announcement posted to Pastrana's Instagram: Got some awesome news today! @kblock43 passed the torch to me for Gymkhana 11. I have some big shoes to fill but more than excited to give it a go. Kens guidelines for me are pretty simple. Keep the essence of Gymkhana with -epic vehicle -unattainable location -precision driving with close proximity to catastrophe. The @vermont.sportscar team has already started work on building the baddest #subaru of all time. Need to find a location that I can make this car fly and drive it like I stole it. #gameon #nopressure @subarumotorsportsusa are you guys ready for this!!! @yokohamatire I’m going to need a lot of tires ?? @hooniganracing @redbull @dirtfishrally Vermont SportsCar is the technical partner to Subaru of America and has been the hub for Subaru Motorsports USA since 2005, so there's no question Pastrana's WRX will be monumental. As part of the event, there is also a competition to win a chance to be at the filming of Gymkhana 11 and hang with Pastrana. All proceeds go to a good cause.

2021 Subaru Outback Review | Still marching to its own drum

Fri, Aug 7 2020

The Subaru Outback has always been different. At first, it was weird for a wagon since it had standard all-wheel drive, a ride height lift and rugged styling flourishes. Today, it's weird simply for being a wagon – all others have effectively disappeared, and it really only competes with small crossovers. And against those, the 2021 Subaru Outback makes a tremendous case for itself. Though it rides high off the ground with more clearance than the vast majority of SUVs, it's ultimately still lower overall, making it feel more carlike when behind the wheel and making for easier loading for roof-mounted equipment. Its longer wheelbase provides a smoother, more sophisticated ride as well as more space between seating rows. Its cargo area is also shockingly voluminous. Throw in its abundance of safety and infotainment tech, standard all-wheel drive, solid reliability ratings and improved interior quality with last year's redesign, and you have a vehicle that's easy to recommend. We even deemed it a superior choice to Subaru's own compact crossover, the Forester. What's new for 2021? After being completely redesigned last year, the Outback gains two new standard features for 2021: steering responsive LED headlights and a rear seat reminder that alerts you to check in the back seat for children before exiting the car. What are the Outback interior and in-car technology like? Nearly every 2021 Outback comes with a vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen (and even that lone exception comes with a pair of 7-inch units, pictured above right). Its functionality isn't flawless, as the audio controls when using Apple CarPlay are compromised, and the colorful graphics are a bit cartoonish and have an aftermarket look to them. Still, it's generally easy to use, read and reach. Feature content is excellent as well (see pricing and features section below). Unfortunately, typical for Subaru, stereo sound quality is poor. In terms of design, we can't say the interior is especially attractive, but materials quality is stronger than it was in the past. The buttons and switches have a high-quality feel to them, while even the base trim gets simulated leather stitched together on the dash, doors and center console. There's also a welcome injection of color found in the Touring (tasteful brown leather pictured above) and the Onyx Edition pictured below (gray and black "StarTex" vinyl accented in electric green). How big is the Outback? Think a wagon is smaller than an SUV?
