Subaru WRX STI might finally get power bump for 2019

Since it arrived in the US, the Subaru WRX STI has hovered around 300 horsepower. That was world-class in the early 2000s, but the 2018 model's 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer-four 305 horsepower output is no longer something to write home about. This week, The Truth About Cars reported that the hottest Impreza might get another slight bump. A NHTSA document lists the 2019 model at all of 310 horsepower, the same output as the limited-run WRX STI Type RA. If you thought the $50,000 Type RA wasn't worth the extra cash, at least the standard model will get the 5 horsepower bump now, too. That's more than the 292 horsepower Volkswagen Golf R or the 306 horsepower Honda Civic Type R, but it's way off the 350 horsepower output of the Ford Focus RS. According to the NHTSA filing, there's no power increase mentioned for the non-STI Subaru WRX. We're hoping the next generation WRX STI will finally shed the old EJ-series boxer-four in favor of a more modern and more powerful engine. The standard Impreza was updated in 2016, and the performance variants usually follow a few years later. Cross your fingers that a new version of the WRX wagon comes along, too. 2020 Subaru WRX and WRX STI Series.White sneak in one more special edition

LOS ANGELES — This generation of Subaru WRX and WRX STI is nearly done, and has celebrated with special versions here and back in the home country. But the company isn't finished with limited edition models yet, as proven by the 2020 Subaru WRX and WRX STI Series.White model (their punctuation, not ours). Just like past Series.Whatever models, the Series.White is distinguished on the outside by an exclusive Ceramic White paint scheme. It's accented by black mirror caps, black badging and matte bronze wheels. On the WRX, they're 18-inch wheels from Subaru, and the STI gets 19-inch BBS wheels. The paint color isn't the only perk, as each car comes with a selection of desirable options. The WRX basically gets the Premium trim's Performance Package, plus a few goodies. That means it gets Recaro seats, Brembo four-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers, LED adaptive headlights, and the sunroof is deleted. It also gets a special Bilstein suspension setup that hasn't been offered on the WRX before. The WRX STI gets a Bilstein suspension, too, as well as Brembo six-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers, Recaro seats, stiffer steering rack mounts and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Neither model gets any extra power, though. Subaru will only build 500 examples of each model, a total of 1,000 cars. The WRX Series.White has a price of $34,895, and the WRX STI costs $43,595. These special Subarus go on sale next year.

Junkyard Gem: 1982 Subaru BRAT

Like the AMC Eagle, the Subaru BRAT was a big sales hit in Colorado, much more than in the rest of North America, and you still see plenty of examples of both vehicles on Colorado streets ... and in Colorado wrecking yards. Here's a 1982 BRAT with camper shell that made it to age 35 before being forcibly retired. Based on the Subaru Leone (which was sold in the United States as "The Subaru"), the BRAT was a lightweight, four-wheel-drive truck that could slog through mud and snow, but didn't slurp gas quite as hard as other 4WD trucks. They rusted instantly in the Midwest and Northeast, but held together pretty well in the West. This one has the "Twin-Halo" sunroof setup. How much power do you need in a pickup? In 1982, 72 horses, from this 1,781cc boxer-four engine, were enough for BRAT buyers. Subaru evaded paying the Chicken Tax on early BRATs by installing jumpseats in the bed, which (legally speaking) made the BRAT a four-seat passenger car; like most BRATs that end up in junkyards, the jumpseats are long gone from this one. Many personal-injury lawsuits later, the jumpseats were nixed and BRAT buyers had to pay the tax. Note the Subaru-owner-stereotype-defying bumper stickers on the back window.
