Subaru bringing new XV concept to Geneva

The high-riding, Impreza-based Subaru Crosstrek is due for an update. So to whet our appetites, Subaru's showing a concept that previews the new XV. The concept will debut in Geneva, and it's being teased today in the image above. The Japanese automaker isn't saying much about what will go into the new XV Concept, and the teaser doesn't give us much to go on aside from an impression of body-cladded ruggedness. But it isn't hard to see what direction Subaru is going in here. It already revealed the Impreza 5-Door Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, and the Impreza Sedan Concept in LA shortly thereafter, each previewing different bodystyles for Fuji Heavy's compact model. Like the Outback Sport before it, the Crosstrek is essentially a beefed-up version of the current Impreza. So we'd expect the new XV concept to follow a similar path, building upon the show cars we saw recently in Japan and California and taking them down a more rugged path for the European show. We'll look forward to seeing how it shapes up, but more than that, to seeing how Subaru implements the designs for production. The annals of history are filled with some pretty strange vans. Here in the U.S., we've seen such oddities as the Stout Scarab and, more recently, the mid-engine, supercharged, all-wheel-drive Toyota Previa. In other parts of the world, things have gotten even more interesting. Take this Subaru Libero for instance. A 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine means it isn't a Kei car, despite the van's diminutive dimensions. That engine is mounted at the rear, and it sends 73 horsepower to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. This particular Libero is far from perfect, but it shows just 14,000 miles on the odometer and you're not likely to see many others like it here in the States. The high roof with its trio of glass panels keep things light and airy inside, and its massive rear hatch makes all that space inside extremely accessible. Sure, it's not a camper, which means its owner won't be living that hashtag-vanlife. But it offers a lot of space for its size, so it might be the perfect promotional vehicle for a local delivery business or the like. At the very least, this little Subaru Libero would definitely strike up lots of interesting conversation at your local Saturday-morning hangout, and that's what's really important, right? It's currently for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $9,900 and located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Subaru looks back on record-setting WRX STI from 2011 Isle of Man

In what we can only presume/hope is a precursor to the launch of the next-gen WRX STI, Subaru has released three videos now giving us a look back at the history of the STI-badged WRX models. In this third video, Dominick Infante, national manager of product communications at Subaru of America, got ahold of the automaker's 2011 WRX STI that broke records for the Isle of Man TT Challenge a couple of years ago.
In 2011, rally driver Mark Higgins piloted this car to a lap speed record of 115 miles per hour and a lap time record of 19:56.7 around the 37.8-mile course. The race-prepped STI, which Infante refers to as an "STI on steroids," features a beefed-up suspension, a wonderful-sounding open exhaust and the removal of the speed limiter to go with full roll cage and racing seats and harnesses.
