Subaru Forester named Motor Trend 2014 SUV of the Year [w/video]
Thu, 10 Oct 2013Each year, Motor Trend hands out its coveted Golden Calipers to its Car, Truck and SUV of the Year, and in the latter category, this year's bragging rights belong to the redesigned Subaru Forester. In the 14-year history of the SUV award category, Subaru is the only automaker to win three times (2009, 2010 and 2014) and the Forester is the only model to make a return appearance having also won the award back in 2009. In the last six years, this award has either gone to a Subaru or to a luxury crossover/SUV (Mercedes GL-Class in 2013, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque in 2012 and Porsche Cayenne in 2011).
Out of the 13 new or updated crossovers and SUVs in contention for the award, the 2014 Forester came out on top thanks its value, fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive attitude. Rather than a head-to-head battle, the utility vehicles are all judged on six criteria (design, engineering, efficiency, safety, value and performance of intended function). Other vehicles on the consideration list included the Acura MDX, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Toyota RAV4.

Subaru announces 2019 BRZ pricing, new Series.Gray limited edition
Thu, Sep 13 2018Subaru has announced the pricing of the 2019 model year BRZ coupe, along with a new limited edition version. A 250-unit Series.Gray edition will be offered as the top version. The cheapest BRZ trim level, yet called Premium, starts at $25,795 for 2019. That is a $200 bump from 2018, and changes include a standard rear-view camera, welcome lighting for approaching or exiting the vehicle, and dual USB ports. Otherwise the equipment list largely reads like the 2018 BRZ's the $28,645 Limited trim gets an updated seven-inch multimedia system which now gets over-the-air WiFi updates. As for the $30,140 Series.Gray edition, it can be recognized from the edition-specific Cool Gray Khaki hue, which is the same color as on a limited edition of the Japan-only BRZ STI Sport unveiled at last year's Tokyo Motor Show. Essentially, the Series.Gray is based on the Limited trim level, with the $1,195 Performance Package on top that adds improved Brembo brakes front and rear, along with Sachs sports shocks. 17-inch black wheels are included, as well as different interior stitching and an improved rear-view mirror; outside mirrors have a different, crystal black finish. Meanwhile in Japan, the BRZ has also been updated slightly for 2019. While the exterior hasn't changed much, the car has gained small rear wheel arch fins to control aerodynamics more efficiently, and the shock absorbers have been changed to improve the car's handling further. Subaru Viziv Evolution Concept looks strangely familiar
Thu, 21 Nov 2013The Tokyo Motor Show has proven to be far deeper and more interesting in 2013 than it has been in recent years, surely a trailing indicator of the revived auto industry in Japan and throughout the world. Still, we have seen a few concept cars that have been nearly 'recycled' from shows earlier in the season.
This Subaru Viziv Evolution concept is a case in point - it looks not unlike the Viziv Concept that the company hauled over to the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year. What gives?
Well, the original Viziv wrapped its sexy crossover-coupe bodywork around a powertrain composed of a 2.0-liter diesel engine and three electric motors, two of which powered the two rear wheels (another trendy hybrid setup). This new "Evolution" of the Viziv is not dissimilar from its progenitor, swapping in a small displacement gasoline-powered engine for the diesel unit. All of this is based on reports out of Tokyo, mind you, as official information on the car is scarce at the moment.
