Unhappy with Customer Service -- Was overcharged by this auto shop
I have been going to D&D for several years now, and was content with the oil changes and minor services I`d had performed.

Recently (Feb-09) I took my car in for diagnosis because it failed to start over the prior weekend, and I`d been having slow starts leading up to it. They ran a diagnostic on my car and found nothing, so decided to change my spark plugs. They charged me $28 per plug and $190 total, b... view moreut didn`t give me any quote or even tell me what they`d done until I called that afternoon after they`d already completed the spark plug change. They told me the spark plugs were bad and that was the issue. I didn`t bother complaining about the change of plugs without my permission, figuring I`d have had to have them changed anyways at some point and happy they`d fixed my car.

The following morning my car was still having the slow start, and I also found out from a friend that spark plugs only normally cost $5-$10. I followed up with D&D and got the part number, researched the price on the internet and got a quote from another shop for the exact same service, including same part - the plugs were only $8-$10 on the internet, and the other nearby shop would have charged me $10.69 for the plugs. D&D charged me $17 more per plug than I should have been charged, on a service that did not relate to what I took my car in for (I had someone look at the spark plugs they had removed and while it was fair to say they could use a change, there was nothing indicating it would cause my car to fail to start).

After several rather heated discussions D&D did refund me the $17/per plug difference but refused to admit they had done anything wrong (they just charge me what their list says, regardless of how high the markup is or what others sell the part for). The shop techs were extremely rude to me and implied I was a "problem customer" because I felt I was overcharged for the part. As it turned out, my head gasket blew the day after I got my car back from D&D. The shop that ended up fixing it feels it was probably just a coincidence and that the faulty gasket was probably going bad and the reason for my initial car problems.

In the future, I hope that D&D takes up the practice to check the cost of a part & the retail of a part prior to selling to a customer to ensure they are not unfairly charging the customer (for example, add a check to make sure they don`t charge the customer more than 50% markup -- in my case they marked up 200% and $17 above what anyone else was selling it for). I also hope that they make sure they are getting customer approval prior to completing work that was not already discussed with the customer, and remember to treat customers fairly to retain their business. I feel the whole situation was unfortunate and hope that this doesn`t happen to any other customers.
