Hamden Police Log Arrest of...
DMV denies license for Hamden car dealer Published: Thursday, August 02, 2012 By Ann DeMatteo, Register Staff adematteo@nhregister.com / Twitter: @annddematteo HAMDEN ?ˆ” A used-car dealer on State Street has been shut down by the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which recently denied him a new license to operate. According to the DMV, David Taylor, the owner of Bernardo Motors, 2575 State St., allege... view moredly owes the state more than $200,000 in sales tax and consumers more than $7,000, and is not qualified to operate. On June 5, Taylor was charged by Hamden police with first-degree larceny in connection with a May 4 complaint from Timothy Costa of Bristol. On June 12, the Hamden Planning and Zoning Commission gave Taylor permission to operate, but he was informed in a July 16 letter the DMV denied him a required license to operate. He asked the DMV for a dealer and repair license on June 14. Meanwhile, Taylor was at Bernardo Motors Thursday afternoon. When a reporter first approached ,he said he was renovating. When asked about the DMV?ˆ™s action, he refused to answer questions and asked why it mattered to the Register whether a business was open or closed. A sign on the door to customers said the business was changing its name to Taylor?ˆ™s Auto Imports on Aug. 1. ?ˆ?While this new licensing is being done, we will be performing renovations on repaving our outside lot and some interior remodeling of our showroom and offices. We will be opening on a random schedule during these two weeks. ... We hope you will enjoy our new facility when completed..,?ˆ? the note said. Taylor?ˆ™s attorney, Stanley Cohen of West Hartford, declined comment Thursday. However, the letter from the DMV said that Taylor was entitled to a hearing to contest the denial of the license. According to the DMV, Bernardo?ˆ™s license as a used car dealer was revoked on May 30 because Taylor failed to pay a civil penalty that had been assessed by a DMV hearing officer after an earlier administrative hearing. ?ˆ?The DMV has examined your history as a dealer...and has concluded that you do not have sufficient financial resources to conduct a licensed business, and as a result have been unable to conform to the law and regulations governing your dealership,?ˆ? the letter said, pointing to multiple consumer complaints, lawsuits and criminal matters. The letter also said Taylor paid DMV fees from an account containing insufficient funds, and that he collected sales tax from customers who purchased cars from him, but he did not remit the money to the state Department of Revenue Services. The $200,000 he owes in sales tax doesn?ˆ™t include interest and penalties and there are additional consumer cases that are being processed by the DMV in connection with the revoked license, the letter said. On June 5, Taylor, who lives in Branford, was charged with first-degree forgery and misapplication of property, police said at the time. Costa said he waited for months for proceeds from Taylor and neither he nor the company that gave him a loan for his 2005 BMW 645i convertible have been fully paid. The case will continue in Meriden Superior Court on Aug. 28. And Tim Costa will be there as the states witness. Hamden Police arrested: David Taylor, 52, of 34 Lantern View Drive, Branford. He was charged with Larceny in the 1st Degree, Forgery in the 1st Degree and Misapplication of Property. Taylor, who was released on a Written Promise to Appear, is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on June 18th.
