Be wary of recommended repairs

The owner suggested multiple repairs that did not fix the problems. There were two major repairs that were done and still the symptoms that prompted the repairs are still there. 1. There was noise from the front axle, which he suggested to replace the shocks. I did that and the noise was still there. I brought it back to them and they fixed the problem temporarily. A few months later the same problem is back ... view moreand now I have to find another shop to repair. 2. Once he told me of a loud clicking noise when he turned the steering wheel back and forth (with engine off). He suggested that I replace the rack & pinion, which cost me over $400. After doing so, the same noise was still there. Recently, my wife took her car in for some trouble with her engine and they suggested replacing the gasket on the 4th cyclinder ($800), or replacing the entire engine (used, $1350). She took the car to another mechanic on a friend`s advice and the problem was fixed for about $350. Bottom line, I`m never going back.
