Model Overview
The new 9-5 has an all-turbo powertrain lineup, bringing the power of larger engines without the fuel economy disadvantages of upsizing. The Turbo4 model is powered by a 220-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. 9-5 Turbo6 models come with a 300-hp, 2.8L turbo V6. The smaller engine is E85-capable, meaning that it can be fueled with a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol. Transmissions on either model include a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Turbo6 models include Saab's XWD all-wheel drive system--a system that's geared both for sport-minded driving as well as inclement weather, using an electronic limited-slip rear differential and center differential system to send power quickly to the wheels with more traction. In normal driving, the system sends about 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels. Completely redesigned for 2011 with a sleek, clean shape on the outside and an interior that builds on Saab's past, the new 9-5 is about seven inches longer than the 9-5 it replaces, with most of that added length going to legroom in the cabin. The interior itself carries what Saab calls a "progressive Scandinavian design" and is appointed with materials that stand out in its class; gauges and controls are more clearly inspired by Saab's aircraft heritage. All models now get an engine start-stop button on the center console between the front seats and backseat passengers can get their own temperature control. At the top of the new 9-5 range is the performance-oriented 9-5 Aero, which adds more aggressive aerodynamics in front and in back, plus fog lamps, adaptive cornering lamps, rectangular exhaust tips and larger 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires. The sporty Aero model doesn't ride as stiffly as you might expect, thanks to DriveSense, an adaptive chassis control system that includes three modes--comfort, sport and intelligent, which firms up the dampers only when needed. Standard equipment on the Aero is greatly expanded compared to the other models--to include variable-effort quick-ratio power steering, a panoramic moonroof, bi-xenon headlamps, perforated leather upholstery, sport seats, remote start and upgraded trim throughout. Also among the innovative tech features available on the 9-5 are an aircraft-style head-up display, bi-xenon adaptive lighting, automatic headlamp leveling and dynamic parking assistance--all part of the Technology Package. The 11-speaker premium surround sound system from harman/kardon, includes an 8-inch touch-screen with navigation system and 10 GB for music storage. A backseat DVD player is also available, including wireless headphones and viewing screens that fold out from the seatbacks. It's offered as part of the Rear Passenger Package that bundles the DVD system with tri-zone climate control, rear-seat audio controls and a separate rear forced-air vent.

Petrolicious keeps our love of the Saab Sonett aflame

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

German auto designs lean toward function and purpose. Italian designers deliver passion and beauty. The Brits, majesty. American cars, brashness and authority. If you want a funky design, though, you go to Sweden. The land of cheap, do-it-yourself furniture and delicious meatballs knows a thing or six about style and design, and while that character is only now reemerging thanks to a certain string of Volvo concepts, it use to be that Saab was the authority on penning some of the industry's more unique designs.
Take the beautiful Sonett for example - a small coupe whose appearance is a funky mishmash of a Porsche 911 and a Bugeyed Sprite with just a hint of a Citroën DS (it's that convex rear window). It's a positively striking car, made more unique by its two-stroke, three-cylinder powertrain and four-on-the-tree manual transmission. With just 70 horsepower hauling about 1,500 pounds of Swedish style, the Sonett strikes us as an ideal alternative to some of the English sports cars of its day, particularly for those that are looking for something beyond your average MG or Triumph.
For Glenn Roberts, the Sonett was a part of his childhood. His family owned example was originally a special-order item by his parents in 1967. He bought the car from them 13 years later and has never looked back, completing a restoration in 2004. With a story like that, it's not surprising that Roberts and his silver Sonett are the most recent pairing to get some attention from Petrolicious.

NEVS Saab EV prototype on display, with top speed of just 75 mph

Sat, Aug 23 2014

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the Saab-owning Swedish holding company that is in turn owned by Chinese investors, has some problems (i.e., no cash). But that isn't stopping NEVS from showing off a prototype Saab 9-3 Electric Vehicle this week. But wait, you might be saying, didn't NEVS already start production of a 9-3 EV? Yes, indeed, and the vehicle displayed this week was indeed built at the Saab plant in Trollhattan in May as one of those early pilot builds. A modified Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan, the EV has had the lithium-ion battery pack jammed under the floor, so all of the cargo and passenger space of the gas-powered 9-3 remains available. "The starting point for our development of the Electric Vehicle project was to maintain all the good attributes and characteristics," said NEVS' vice president of engineering and product development, Stig Nodin in a statement. You can find the press release below. The li-ion pack comes from Beijing National Battery Technology (which is owned by the same company that owns NEVS) and can offer a range of about 120 miles, NEVS says. The prototype also has a 100-kW electric motor that offers 140 horsepower that provides a 0-60 miles per hour time of 10 seconds and a top speed of just 75 miles per hour. That's unlikely to be fast enough to outrun Saab's creditors, but NEVS says that the prototype is here "to serve as a reference for specification of coming production model(s)," so let's hope the speed number can be increased while the range at least stays the same. Today Nevs presented the Saab 9-3 Electric Vehicle as designed and produced as part of a prototype series in Trollhattan. The car is a modified Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan where the batteries are placed under the floor, keeping the full interior space as well as the luggage compartment intact. With that, the Saab 9-3 EV is just as practical as the Saab 9-3 Aero with gasoline engine. The Saab 9-3's famous driving-experience is of course preserved in the EV, helped by its low center of gravity and a 50/50 weight distribution. "We are happy to present the result of Nevs engineering into a real Saab EV product. The Saab cars' well-known performance and safety is maintained and we foresee a very good product for the market. When we developed the Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan Model Year 14, we focused on enhancing the driving experience, safety and quality.

Koenigsegg plans a ‘CO2 neutral’ hybrid supercar

Fri, Feb 1 2019

Fresh from receiving a 150 million-euro infusion from National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the Chinese-backed company that bought up Saab's assets out of bankruptcy, supercar maker Koenigsegg has signaled just what it plans to do under the new joint venture. Christian von Koenigsegg gave an interview to Top Gear in which he said he wants to develop an all-new supercar to sit below ultra-exclusive models like the Agera RS and Regera, priced at around ˆ1 million (about $1.15 million) to grow sales from 20 a year into the hundreds, because "our brand has outgrown our production volumes by quite a big margin." And it will feature a novel, "completely CO2 neutral" hybrid powrtrain using the "freevalve" camless combustion engine technology the company has been developing in concert with battery-electric power. "Given the freevalve technology, we can actually cold-start the car on pure alcohol, down to -30 degrees Celsius, so there's no need for any fossil fuel mix then," he told Top Gear. "The idea is to prove to the world that even a combustion engine can be completely CO2 neutral." Von Koenigsegg previously hinted at the setup after talking about how his engineers were responding to Tesla's claims that its forthcoming next-generation Roadster would be capable of a 1.9-second 0-60 mph time. He further hints that the new hybridized supercar will look unmistakably like a Keonigsegg but be in a different segment altogether from either the Agera RS or plug-in hybrid Regera. Consider us very much intrigued and eager to hear more. Meanwhile, Koenigsegg has said it plans to reveal the successor to the Agera RS next month at the Geneva Motor Show based on a refined version of the same supercharged V8 combustion engine. The new joint venture with NEVS, meanwhile, sees that company take a 65 percent ownership stake, with Koenigsegg holding the rest and contributing its trove of intellectual property, technology licenses and product design. NEVS also gets a 20 percent stake in Koenigsegg itself. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
