2019 Ram 1500 aces IIHS crash tests
Thu, Nov 8 2018The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has finally performed crash tests on the completely redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck, and it's mostly great news for the Ram. The Crew Cab earned the highest "Good" rating in all six crash tests. Impressively, that includes both the driver and passenger small overlap tests, which has been a rare feat. It's also the first truck to get a rating in that passenger-side test, thus is also the only truck with a "Good" rating for the crash type. The 2019 Ram also marks a major improvement over the previous-generation Ram, which only scored the second-lowest rating of "Marginal" in the driver small overlap test. The passenger side wasn't tested. The old Ram also only had a "Marginal" roof strength rating. In addition to having great crash test results, the Ram 1500 also earned the best possible rating for its optional forward collision prevention technology. It was capable of bringing the truck to a complete stop, avoiding a collision at speeds up to 25 mph. The Ram's only weak point was its headlights, which were rated "Marginal" at best. Because of the headlight performance, the IIHS didn't give it a Top Safety Pick award. This is a weak point for most trucks, as the only ones with headlight ratings above "Marginal" are the Honda Ridgeline and the 2018 GMC Sierra. The Ridgeline is also the only pickup tested by the organization to receive the Top Safety Pick award. With that being said, both the 2019 Ram 1500 as well as the 2018 Ford F-150 should qualify for the Top Safety Pick award if headlight performance improves. Note that the collision prevention and headlight ratings also apply to the Ram 1500 Quad Cab, but that the crash ratings do not. It's likely the IIHS will test that in the future. Fiat Chrysler wins top Total Quality Award for first time
Mon, Jul 20 2015The Strategic Vision Total Quality Awards are 20 years old in 2015, and Chrysler has never topped the awards before. Until now, that is. Fiat Chrysler takes the overall award on the corporate level with six segment leaders from Fiat, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram. The Fiat 500 won Small Multi-Function Car, the 500e won Small Alternative Powertrain, the Dodge Challenger tied at the top in the Specialty Coupe category alongside the very un-coupe Mini Cooper Countryman, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited took the Entry SUV category, the Dodge Durango won in Mid-Size SUV, and Ram took the overall in Best Non-Luxury Brand. The accolade means FCA has gone from one segment winner in 2010 to overall victory in five years. Cars have gotten so good, says Strategic Vision, that it is harder than ever to win. In fact, says the group, 18 years ago 85 percent of all vehicle brands had more than half a problem per vehicle. This year, no brand has more than half a problem per vehicle. The organization measures "over 155 specific aspects of the customer's experience," and scores are based on input from more than 46,000 customers. Other notables in and near the winner's circle include Volkswagen and General Motors, who tied for second place on the corporate scale, one point behind FCA. The Mini Cooper Roadster scored the highest of any model, the Corvette Stingray Convertible and Coupe scored the second- and third-highest. The Chevrolet Colorado is the first domestic Standard Pickup winner in more than ten years, and the Nissan Titan carried the Full-Size Pickup category. The press release below has all the details on how winners and losers are selected, and the full list of automakers and how they finished. "The Customer's 'Total' Experience Defines Quality, Fiat Chrysler Scores Highest in Total Quality," says Strategic Vision The 2015 Total Quality Awards® SAN DIEGO, Friday, July 17, 2015 — Unknown to many, when some consumer research firms rank a car company's quality performance they often do so by simply "counting problems." In the past, this may have been acceptable, but in today's modern and efficient manufacturing world the difference between the worst brand and best brand is LESS than half-a-problem per vehicle. Thus, any "quality ranking" based on this method is severely lacking in the complete picture of the "Total" Quality experience that customers actually use to judge their product ownership.
Ram issues recall on heavy-duty pickup transfer cases
Thu, Aug 11 2016UPDATE: A previous version of this story said the issue only occurred in four-wheel drive. This is incorrect – issues are only exhibited in two-wheel drive. The Basics: Ram is recalling 930 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy-duty pickups from model year 2016. The affected 3500s were built between July 24, 2015 and January 7, 2016, while the larger 4500/5500 trucks were screwed together between July 24, 2015 and October 8, 2015. The Problem: According to the official NHTSA bulletin, the "transfer case may have been manufactured with a misshapen main output shaft, creating voids that may cause a shaft fracture." If this happens, the vehicle could lose power. The driver might not be able to select park, either. Injuries/Deaths: FCA isn't aware of any injuries or deaths related to the issue. The Fix: Dealerships will replace the transfer case on affected trucks. If you own one: You probably don't. According to FCA spokesman Eric Mayne, dealers haven't delivered the majority of the affected trucks to customers. But if you really do own one, Mayne added that the issue only occurs in two-wheel drive. We'd advise keeping it in four-wheel drive until you can report to your local dealer. FCA kicked the recall off on August 10, so expect a mailed notification soon. Related Video:
