Ram boss says not to expect midsize pickup in America

Remember that mysterious midsize four-door pickup FCA was spotted testing recently? It may be sold as a Fiat in markets overseas, but don't expect it to join the Ram lineup in North America. At least not according to the latest word from the truck brand's new boss. Speaking with Automotive News at the New York Auto Show, Ram CEO Bob Hegbloom outlined four criteria for a successful midsize pickup, particularly in the North American marketplace: they have less capability than a fullsize truck, but return with a more compact form, lower price and considerably higher fuel economy. "I've been able to develop a strategy to come up with three of the four," said Hegbloom, but "I haven't seen anyone who can deliver on all four." Smaller and less capable are easy, but getting both the price and the fuel consumption down at the same time is where it gets tricky. As it is, a Ram 1500 with the diesel engine and rear-wheel drive delivers 29 miles per gallon on the highway, which is already more than the 27-mpg rating on the midsize Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. But Hegbloom figures that in order to justify a midsize pickup, American buyers would expect at least 35 mpg on the highway, and in order to do so, FCA would have to employ some trick tech, which would in turn raise the price beyond an attractive level. The last time Chrysler offered a midsize truck in America was with the Dakota that was discontinued in 2011. Ford similarly ceased offering the Ranger in North America in 2012, leaving the new Colorado and Canyon to take on the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier in the compact/midsize pickup market in the US. With the prospect of a Ram version apparently off the table, then, Fiat's midsize four-door pickup is likely take on the likes of the Volkswagen Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota Hilux in markets like Europe and South America. But like those trucks, it will likely never see the inside of an American showroom.

2021 Ram TRX will get new FCA 'Know & Go' app to educate owners about their truck

FCA has developed a new app called “Know & Go,” and itÂ’s debuting with the 2021 Ram TRX. The purpose of the app is to help owners get more acquainted with and learn about their vehicle without having to dig through the ownerÂ’s manual. Instead, the app allows you to point your camera at certain things within and around the vehicle, and then it brings up information about what your camera is trained on. It uses augmented reality technology to make it work. For example, if you point the camera at the engine bay, youÂ’ll be prompted with a detailed description of the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that makes 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. 2021 Ram 1500 TRX front 3/4 in motion View 53 Photos The few photos provided by FCA show items that the app can read such as your drive mode switcher, off-road pages, paddle shifters and more. ItÂ’ll pull up sections of the ownerÂ’s manual, suggest how-to videos for certain functions and even prompt you to dive into features you might not know existed. Considering how complex and complicated modern cars can be, we imagine this has the potential to enlighten some folks about features that would otherwise go undiscovered. Of course, that also assumes the owner will actually download the app and use the AR technology correctly. FCA says the app is rolling out with functionality for the TRX initially, but says we should expect to see it on other FCA vehicles soon. Ram 1500 TRX thunders across the desert ahead of August 17 debut

Ram turned every head at the 2016 edition of the Texas State Fair when it introduced a 1500-based, Hellcat-powered concept named Rebel TRX. Nearly four years later, it's finally ready to unveil the production version of its burly truck, which will seemingly lose the Rebel designation while keeping the supercharged V8. Aimed directly at the Ford F-150 Raptor, the 1500 TRX — an acronym which stands for Tyrannosaurus Rex; get it? — will arrive as a high-performance truck that feels right at home speeding through the desert. Although the preview video released by Ram hides the truck's overall design, it's reasonable to assume it will receive a rugged look characterized by a model-specific front bumper that increases the approach angle, skid plates that protect the underbody, and massive tires tucked under fender flares. It will be bigger and meaner than the standard 1500. It will sound the part, too, thanks to a version of the supercharged, 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 engine found in several Dodge and Jeep models. Although the concept made 575 horsepower, insiders (and spy videos shot on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes) hinted the production model will put over 700 horses under the driver's right foot. Ram will introduce the 1500 TRX online on August 17 at noon Eastern time, which is 9 a.m. in Los Angeles. It will stream the event on its various social media outlets (including its Facebook account and its YouTube channel). Sales will start in the coming months, but pricing information hasn't been announced yet. We expect the TRX will be pegged in the same price bracket as the F-150 Raptor, which starts at $55,150 including destination. And, while Dodge will only manufacture the Hellcat-powered Durango for six months, we'd be surprised if the 1500 TRX lands as a limited-edition model.
