The Panamera fills the gap in Porsche's line between sports cars and the Cayenne SUV, offering high speed touring
for four in a comfortable and spacious package. It's especially wide at 76 inches, and its 195 inch length and 55.8
inch height make for plenty of interior space, and its rear hatch gives good access to its 15.7-cubic feet of
storage space. Flop the seatbacks down, and there's room for 44.6 cubic feet of luggage. The center of the
Panamera's body structure is steel, helping with rigidity, while the front frame sections, front double-wishbone
suspension components, rear subframe and multilink suspension, hood, doors and hatch are aluminum, which reduces
excess weight. In all, the S weighs in at just 3,968 pounds--well under the Maserati Quattroporte or Mercedes-Benz
S63 AMG--and weight at extreme ends of the chassis has been eliminated, giving excellent handling
characteristics.Five models are available: The base model comes in both rear-wheel and all-wheel form, S and the
all-wheel drive 4S and Turbo. The base models are powered by a 3.6L V6. The S and 4S are powered by Porsche's
32-valve 4.8L V8, which makes 400 horses and 369 pound-feet of torque. The S models has a top speed of 175 mph and
provides a 0-60 time of just 5.2 seconds. The 4S shares the same 175 mph top speed, but the addition of all wheel
drive drops the 0-60 time to 4.8 seconds. The Turbo makes 500 horses, which Porsche claims allows it to sprint to
60 in just 4 seconds flat on its way to a 188 mph top speed. All Panameras receive an updated version of Porsche's
PDK 7-speed automatic, which has been given two main shafts rather than the three offered in the 911, allowing the
unit to fit in a more narrow transmission tunnel and freeing up interior space. The 7-speed is optional on all
rear-wheel drive Panameras and standard on all the all-wheel drive models. All models receive a stop-start system,
which stops the engine when the car comes to a complete stop to save fuel. Once the brake is released, the engine
is automatically restarted. An available air suspension system allows control of the car's spring rate with the flip
of a switch, automatically lowering the car's ride height. Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is also
available, which de-couples the chassis' stabilizer bars when running in a straight line to increase ride quality,
then automatically reengaging them in the corners for increased control. Several levels are selectable with a
switch mounted on the dash. Porsche also offers a ceramic brake upgrade (PCCB), which reduces unsprung weight while
also significantly improving braking performance. The Panamera's interior features a liberal use of woodgrain,
leather and brushed aluminum. The louvers on the air vents, the sunvisors, the interior mirror and front and rear
consoles all available in leather trim. 18-way adjustable leather front seats and 8-way adjustable rears are
standard, as well as a host of power options. The Panamera is available for customization through Porsche's
Exclusive & Tequipment service, offering an array of high-end options including a rear seat cooling box in the
center console, which keeps drinks chilled and includes Porsche-crested glasses. Rear seat entertainment is also
available, which includes dual 7-inch flatscreen monitors mounted in the front seats' headrests, as well as
individual DVD players and cordless headphones.

Porsche says goodbye to Audi's Le Mans team in this classy video

Fri, Dec 16 2016

Well, this is cute. You may remember that in 2014 Audi made a video to welcome Porsche, its corporate sibling, back to Le Mans racing. It involved an Audi race car, a farmer on an old Porsche tractor, and the street in front of Porsche HQ. With Audi leaving Le Mans after a successful 18-year run, Porsche is returning the favor with this sort of sappy video. There's not much more to it. The video starts with clips from the original, where the Porsche-diesel-tractor-driving farmer is passed by an Audi R18 that traveled from Ingolstadt to Stuttgart to make some very precise German street graffiti (in English). Then, in the present day, the farmer hears the news of Audi leaving LMP1 and he gets an idea while Joe Cocker's "Up Where We Belong" starts to play. (Yes, seriously.) We won't spoil the ending for you. It still stinks that Audi had to leave Le Mans racing in the wake of the diesel scandal to focus on Formula E racing instead. But it's good to see there are no hard feelings between the two VW Group brands, at least as far as the marketing departments are concerned. We expect the Porsche-Audi sibling rivalry and corporate squabbles to continue behind closed doors, however. Related Video: Audi Porsche Racing Vehicles Videos porsche 919 hybrid

Porsche Macan to debut at LA Auto Show

Wed, 29 May 2013

Auto Express reports Porsche will unveil the upcoming Macan SUV at this year's LA Auto Show. Citing an unnamed "insider," AE says that the five-door will bow with engines, suspension and interior architecture that will help differentiate it from its Audi Q5 chassis mate. Big shocker there. We've been hearing the same line since we first caught word of the Macan back when it was still rolling around under the Cajun name. The report does shed some light on the model's pricing, however. That same insider says the Porsche Macan will carry a price tag of 36,000 pounds.
What does that mean for American buyers? Do some quick math based on current conversion rates, and average UK and US prices, and we come up with a sticker of roughly $42,000 here in the land of the free. That fits in line with the rest of the company's stable, with the larger Cayenne starting at $49,600.
Still, we'll wait for more concrete word before jumping behind the AE report wholeheartedly. The 2013 LA Auto Show gets going in late November.

2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder First Drive [w/video]

Mon, Jul 13 2015

The recipe for the 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder cooked up a meal that everyone loved. Yes, even with the three-piece, Erector Set canvas top that took one journalist 30 minutes to lower the first time. Boiled down, the 2011 model was a Boxster S with 10 extra horsepower and 176 fewer pounds, graced with accelerated reflexes. For the second coming of the Boxster Spyder, Porsche fortified the ingredients it used in the first. It starts with the Boxster GTS and adds the 3.8-liter flat-six from the 911 Carrera S, tuned to 375 horsepower and 301 pound-feet of torque. The Spyder subtracts around 72 pounds compared to the Boxster GTS, weighing in at 2,899 pounds. This, then, is both the most powerful and the lightest Boxster you can get. For you fact-checkers out there, the entry-level Boxster is listed at 2,888 pounds on the Porsche USA site, but a spokesman points out that, "the metric for determining weight has changed, which increased the amount of fluids necessary to perform weight testing." In other words, the base Boxster is unchanged, but the real-world curb weight is actually higher. It's ridiculous to quibble over 11 pounds – or whatever the difference is – because the Boxster Spyder has 110 more horsepower and 96 more pound-feet than the base model. With a successful technique already established, we thought the latest Boxster Spyder would even more of a raucous and rowdy good time than its predecessor. But it's not. The standard Boxster Spyder doesn't come with manual A/C or a stereo, but both can be added for no additional cost. The exterior, at least, exhibits the right kind of maturity. Front and rear fascias swiped from the Cayman GT4 add 10 millimeters in length compared to other Boxsters. Those pieces make the car lighter, along with items like the aluminum doors and decklid. The bulges behind the roll hoops, called streamliners, are the can't-miss-it references to Porsche's historic and legendary Spyders. In case admirers still don't get it, Spyder badges sit atop each rear quarter panel. Inside, the leather, body-colored trim, and copious amount of Alcantara is like a track-day package arranged by Prada. The steering wheel is shared with the Cayman GT4. The lightweight sport seats that hug like a carbon fiber cradle in our test car aren't available in our market. Different sport seats are standard in the US, racier buckets are a $4,750 option.
