Porsche reportedly working on new turbocharged flat-four boxer engine?
Wed, 10 Apr 2013These days, we've seen just about every automaker dropping cylinders in an effort to appease tightening fuel economy and emission standards - and Porsche is no exception. Nearly three years after introducing an all-new V6 powerplant under the front hood of its Panamera sedan (launched with a range of V8 engines) comes word that Porsche is working on an all-new turbocharged flat-four boxer to replace the flat-six engines mid-mounted in its Cayman and Boxster models.
Specifics have yet to be learned, but reports say the engine is a derivative of the current 3.8-liter six (shown above) found under the rear decklid of the Carrera S, yet with two fewer cylinders. Fitted with a turbocharger, direct-injection and the automaker's VarioCam Plus, the new all-aluminum 2.5-liter flat-four will likely develop upwards of 350 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. Redline should be about 7,500 rpm. Initial indications say that Porsche will only offer the new engine with its seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic, tuned to take advantage of the low-end torque, but a traditional six-speed manual gearbox has not been ruled out. Despite the loss of two cylinders, enthusiasts will likely embrace the new engine as it promises to be lighter, more fuel efficient and more powerful than the 2.7-liter and 3.4-liter sixes in the Cayman/Boxster today.
Even though Porsche has been using Volkswagen Group engines for years (e.g., Cayenne V6, Cayenne Diesel and upcoming Macan), all indications are that the new flat-four will not be shared. Instead, it will be kept in-house for the automaker's sports cars and possible future fitment in an entry-level 911.
Will the Mission E be the world's first must-have EV?

With the recent onslaught of all-electric technology, the question remains: Which automaker will release the first must have all-electric EV? Tesla has clearly gained experience in testing the worldwide appetite for luxury, six-figure EVs, having sold its 100,000th vehicle in just three years and six months. But it remains to be seen if automakers can truly manufacture the ultimate green driving machine. Audi has shown its R8 e-tron but acknowledged that it will be produced in only limited quantities. On the other end of the spectrum, vehicles like the Chevy Bolt and BMW i8 are being produced for mass consumption, but will they satisfy the enthusiast who is looking for more than a commuter car? Tesla's Model S has certainly raised eyebrows and collected accolades with "ludicrous" level straight-line performance, but how well will the vehicle stand up to long-term ownership for enthusiasts? Porsche has dismissed any notions of autonomous driving in its vehicles, suggesting that it will try to stay close to its high-performance roots. This would seem to suggest that despite all the forecasted performance cred of the Mission E – 582 horsepower, 0–60 in 3.5 seconds, and a 310-mile range – potential buyers may not be getting the latest and greatest in gee-whiz-bang autonomous technology. And while Porsche has offered that future iterations of its 911 and 718 may in fact use hybrid-assisted drivetrains, the execution of a true, mass-produced, all-electric sports sedan remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, unlike start-ups like Tesla, the larger, more established manufacturers have larger budgets and more time to invest in R&D. Consumers have raised expectations from the more mature automakers in terms of reliability and the overall finish of their products. The arrival of the Mission E production car may introduce us to electric sports sedans that emphasize performance over efficiency while still eliminating its carbon footprint. Porsche CEO outlines Cayenne diesel US repair proposal
Wed, Jan 13 2016Porsche has announced a plan to fix the emissions issue on the Cayenne with the 3.0-liter diesel V6, and it includes a software update and the replacement of the catalytic converter on some early examples, according to Reuters. The company believes these repairs are enough to make the SUVs emissions compliant, but the automaker's proposal still needs approval from the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board before it can implement a recall. This authorization could come by the end of January. Note that the proposed 3.0-liter TDI plan is separate from the 2.0-liter TDI fix that was rejected by CARB on Tuesday. There are around 13,000 Cayennes on the road that the company needs to repair. Models from 2013 and 2014 would require a new catalytic converter and a software update, but those from 2015 and 2016 would just need the new software. "The technical aspects have all been submitted, we will wait whether there will still be proposals for corrections by the Americans," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said to Reuters. He wasn't sure how long the repair process would take, but suggested less than half of the affected examples would require the upgraded exhaust hardware. Blume indicated to Reuters that Audi actually created this repair plan. The EPA first issued a violation notice against the 3.0 TDI in early November and later broadened it to around 85,000 vehicles from the 2009-2016 model years, including diesel examples of the Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg, Audi A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7. Audi later admitted the engine contained previously undisclosed auxiliary emission control devices. CARB gave the automaker 45 days to come up with a recall proposal to fix the 15,000 affected models in the state. Related Video:
