Watch the Safari 911 do its thing off road

Thu, Dec 17 2015

American racing driver Leh Keen spends his working hours in the No. 22 Alex Job Racing WeatherTech Porsche 911 GT America campaigning in the United SportsCar Championship. From the looks of this video, he spends his free time off-roading in a Porsche of his own specification: a 1981 Porsche 911 SC modded into an homage to the rallying 911s of the 1970s. Privateers began rallying the 911 not long after it went on sale 50 years ago, winning European events and the European Rally Championship as soon as 1967. After some good showings in the early 70s the carmaker took a 1978 911 SC to the Safari Rally in Africa going for the overall victory, but an encounter with a rock meant the team could only claim second place. Keen's Guards Red coupe channels that ancestor with a lift kit from Elephant Racing and a light rack and mud flaps shipped over from Europe. The engine gets a little more power thanks to intake modifications, some SSI heat exchangers, and a Danske exhaust. To help keep it together on the trail, the bumpers get pulled in and use steel bash bars for protection, and the side mirrors are aero numbers tucked into the A-pillar angle. The interior has been entirely redone. Keen apparently said "he wanted a 911 he could 'go anywhere' with," and the video above shows him doing just that. You can read more about the car in this month's Porsche Club of America magazine, check out Fatlace for the short story and a few pictures, or head to photographer Clint Davis' site for an eyefull of high-res shots of the beast. Porsche 911 GT3 wows the crowds in Geneva

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Porsche has a long and storied history of taking its range-topping 911 sportscar racing, with an enviable record of achievements in tow. The latest machine with which the automaker will take to the track can be seen above: the fifth-generation 2014 911 GT3.
With 475 horsepower strumming through the 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, this is the pinnacle of naturally aspirated performance from Porsche. It can go from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds, hit a top speed of 195 miles per hour and has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven and a half minutes.
A dual-clutch PDK transmission (no standard manual gearbox will be offered) with shorter gearing than lesser 911 models sends power to the rear wheels. Providing forward motion isn't the only thing those rear wheels will be doing - Porsche says the 2014 911 GT3 is fitted with the manufacturer's first active rear-wheel steering.

Bugatti and Rimac joint venture profitable 'beyond expectations'

Thu, Dec 1 2022

WARWICK, England — The joint venture between Croatian electric carmaker Rimac and Bugatti has been far more profitable than anticipated as the two brands work on developing vehicles together under one roof, Rimac's top executive said on Wednesday. "It's highly profitable and cash flow positive beyond anybody's expectations," Rimac CEO Mate Rimac told Reuters in an interview at the UK offices of the carmaker's Rimac Technology unit in Warwick. "It's such a win-win situation for everybody." Rimac added the joint venture has brought "lots of synergies going both ways." The Rimac Group comprises the Bugatti-Rimac JV, producing the electric sportscar Nevera and the Bugatti Chiron — which is owned 45% by Porsche AG — and a technology unit which supplies battery systems and powertrain components to other carmakers. Earlier this year the group raised 500 million euros ($519 million) in a new funding round. Rimac's CEO said the company has developed a "really close strategic relationship" with Porsche, which was listed by its parent Volkswagen in October. Porsche holds a 20% stake in the Rimac group. "We are really collaborating on many levels, developing and producing lots of key elements of their (Porsche's) future hybridization and electrification," he said. Rimac's CEO said the group must become more like Ferrari with a predictable, stable and profitable business before it can contemplate an initial public offering. "They (Ferrari) make projections and they always achieve," he said. "What I want to have is some kind of stability and certainty before we do an IPO because we don't want to make promises we can't keep." An IPO could happen anytime from three years to a decade from now, and could involve going public as a group or spinning off a unit, he said, but is definitely coming because "we obviously have financial investors that at some point want to exit."
