2011 Porsche Cayenne on 2040-cars
North Andover, Massachusetts, United States
First introduced in 2003 to lukewarm applause, the Cayenne quickly silenced its critics by showing itself a serious performer. For 2011, the popular Porsche is redesigned in and out, and there's even more to like in 2011.Four models are offered: Base, S, Turbo and S Hybrid. Base Cayennes feature a 3.6L V6 putting out 300 hp. The S uses a 4.8L that churns out 400 hp. The Turbo version utilizes the same 4.8L V8 allowing it to produce 500 hp. Porsche claims 0?60 mph from the Turbo in just 4.4 seconds, with a top end of 172 mph. Finally, a new gas-electric hybrid--Porsche's first--employs a 333-hp supercharged 3.0L V6 and a 47-hp battery-powered electric motor that combine to deliver 380 hp. The Cayenne Hybrid can run on one or both of its powerplants for an even blend of power and fuel efficiency. Interiors have been redesigned for 2011 as well, with attention to detail in typical Porsche fashion and a look and feel that fall in line with what you see in the Panamera sedan. All rear seats are split folding.Cayennes are suspended by a double wishbone setup in the front and a multilink rear axle, with front and rear stabilizers. All Cayennes offer all-wheel drive. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the Base model, while a new 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic is standard on all others and available on the Base. Towing capacity maxes out at 5,952 pounds for the V6 and 7,716 pounds for all other models. The Cayenne comes with a lengthy standard equipment list. The Base offers power everything, heated mirrors, leather seating, 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with 4-way lumbar support, steering wheel audio controls, rain-sensing wipers, privacy glass, a premium stereo system, a power liftgate, universal garage door opener and auxiliary power outlets.S and Hybrid S models are equipped mostly the same, adding cruise control, a refrigerated glovebox and of course that V8 power. Turbo models include niceties such as aluminum interior trim and an Alcantara headliner, as well as Porsche Communications Management 3.0, which features a 6.5-inch color touchscreen display with integrated MP3, CD, DVD, and navigation. A 14-speaker Bose stereo is also standard in the Turbo. Lots of optional equipment can be specified on the Cayenne, including special exterior paint, special 19-inch wheels, larger fuel tank, Lane Change Assist, the Walnut or Anthracite Birch Interior Package, Porsche Active Suspension Management, Porsche Dynamic Light System, front and rear Park Assist, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes and more. Standard safety features across the range include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with brake assist and brake readiness, advanced airbags throughout the cabin, traction control and stability control.

Porsche and Dodge lead JD Power's 2020 APEAL Study
Wed, Jul 22 2020This may sound obvious, but we'll say it anyway: if an automaker delivers exactly the ownership experience that buyers are looking for and have come to expect, they are going to score well in studies designed to measure a vehicle’s appeal. ThatÂ’s why Porsche, with a score of 881, sits at the top of all vehicle brands in JD PowerÂ’s 2020 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, which is designed to gauge how owners feel about their vehicles on an emotional level. And it's also why Dodge's score of 872 leads all Mass-Market brands, followed closely by corporate cousin Ram. It's worth noting that Dodge — a brand primarily known these days for packing as much horsepower into its aging lineup as possible — was also atop JD Power's 2020 Initial Quality Study (IQS) rankings, making it the first domestic automaker to lead both categories in the same year. Before we continue on with the rest of the winners and losers, we'll mention that Tesla is only unofficially included in this year's study because it did not grant JD Power permission to contact owners of its vehicles in 15 states. Still, the study includes results from surveys completed in the remaining 35 states, and if Tesla had been officially included it would have led all brands with a projected score of 896. Conversely, Tesla would have sat at the very bottom in JD Power's IQS rankings. That means Tesla owners report more problems with their vehicles than owners of any other brand, yet they still love and connect with them on an emotional level. In the Premium rankings, the top five brands were Porsche, Lincoln (876), Cadillac (874), BMW (869) and Land Rover (866). At the bottom of the Premium rankings sit Acura and Audi (tied at 845). Following Dodge and Ram (871) in the Mass-Market category are GMC (857), Ford (853) and Mini (846). Interestingly, there isn't a Japanese brand anywhere in the top five of either category, with Lexus' score of 859 only good enough for eighth spot in the Premium category. The worst performers overall were Volkswagen (832), Mitsubishi (829), Chrysler (828), Toyota (825) and Jeep (822). When asked why Jeep, a brand with a massive fanbase and desirable models like the Wrangler and Gladiator, could land at the very bottom of its rankings, JD Power's Dave Sargent explained that what people love about Jeeps is not necessarily captured in this study.
Meet the man that discovered and restored the oldest existing Porsche
Tue, 11 Mar 2014Luciano Rupolo is an absolutely fascinating gentleman. He was born in France but spent nearly his entire life in Italy as an auto mechanic running his own shop. His grandfather and father instilled a love of sports cars in him that he carried on by historic racing in Italy for decades. He saw his life-long automotive passion repaid when he found and restored the car that might have been the first Porsche registered for the road.
You can spot in his garage a split-window Corvette, Ferrari 250 GTE and other exotics, but Rupolo's most interesting automotive story concerns his Iso Grifo Competizione (pictured above). The sports coupe was found in the Canary Islands as little more than a shell, but Rupolo got help from a prestigious source for its restoration. The result is a motoring masterpiece.
Rupolo is a fantastic storyteller with a captivating, tale to tell. Settle in, scroll down and watch the bittersweet documentary about his life with one of the first Porsches.
Watch the incredibly complicated operation of Porsche's new targa roof
Tue, 14 Jan 2014Despite Porsche having claimed the name, targa tops are nothing new. In addition to the semi-roofless version of the 911, plenty of cars in the past have used removable roof panels - the new Corvette Stingray has one (as have prior generations), and this type of open-air experience has been available on past vehicles like the Pontiac Solstice Coupe and Honda Civic del Sol.
But when Porsche took the top off its brand new 911 Targa here at the Detroit Auto Show, it was indeed cause for pause. Simply put, this is one of the most complicated and intricate electronic roof panel removal techniques we've ever seen, save perhaps, for the setup found on the Japanese-market Civic del Sol from the 1990s.
We won't spoil the video for you, but basically, rather than just the roof panel coming off, the entire rear glass area lifts away the body in order for the small section over the passenger compartment to slide back. This has to be incredibly expensive to repair once it inevitably breaks. And we highly doubt you'll be able to operate this mechanism at any speed.
