Porsche's latest Driver's Selection keeps enthusiasts happy at home

Wed, 25 Sep 2013

Porsche fans - and there are certainly plenty of them out there, even in here on the Autoblog editorial staff - can be pretty emphatic about their enthusiasm, insisting that the 911 is the very definition of the sportscar. And for some, merely admiring one from afar or even leaving theirs parked outside isn't enough. For just such enthusiats, Porsche Design has expanded its Driver's Selection with some tantalizing additions for the home and office.
First up is a desk chair made from the bucket seat in a 911 Carrera, which we have to admit we'd rather be sitting in right now over this blasted, rather unexciting ergonomic office chair. It's covered in black leather (the same you'd find inside an actual 911) embossed with the Porsche emblem and features electronic backrest adjustment.
There's also a wall shelf made from the carbon-fiber rear spoiler a 911 GT3 Cup racecar that can support up to 264 pounds of downforce in the form of books, trinkets and whathaveyou. And there's a limited-edition resin model of the 918 Spyder in 1:8 scale. The items haven't hit the Porsche shop just yet, so we don't have pricing information, but if they tickle your fancy, the online store has plenty more to offer.

Porsche 911 GT spied streaking at the Nurburgring

Mon, Jul 20 2015

At any given moment, you can bet that Porsche is testing some new version of the 911. When we see those prototypes undergoing testing, they're typically camouflaged, at least in part, to keep us from seeing what Zuffenhausen (or Weissach) is up to. But this particular example is completely undisguised. So what are we looking at, exactly? Well, for starters, it's likely the upcoming facelifted version of the current 911. The current 991 generation has been on the market now for four years, so the 991.2 (or 991.5, perhaps?) will likely be tasked with keeping Porsche's iconic sports car current for several more years to come. This version can be seen with front air intakes similar to those on the Cayman GT4, along with updated headlights, LED strips, new door handles, ventilated rear engine cover, reprofiled rear bumper, fresh taillights, and a new exhaust. The far bigger development is that the updated 911 is expected to ditch natural aspiration in favor of downsized turbocharged engines across almost the entire range – not just in the 911 Turbo. This particular version we see here, however, could be one of the few hold-outs for atmospheric pressure. That's because what we're looking at could be the upcoming back-to-basics version being prepared by the GT division – the same outfit responsible for the 911 GT3, GT3 RS, and Cayman GT4. Possibly adopting the name GT5, this new version of the 911 is anticipated to be the purist's choice: naturally aspirated flat-six, three-pedal manual transmission, skinny tires, no frills. This undisguised prototype appears to be packing a production roll cage and thin, leather-clad bucket seats – splitting the difference between racing buckets and the usual, thicker thrones. We'll have to wait a bit longer until Porsche is ready to release all the details of the refreshed 911, hopefully to include that GT version. But for an unadulterated taste of what's to come, look no further than the spy shots in the image gallery above. Related Video:

2015 Porsche Cayenne S

Tue, 23 Sep 2014

Oh, Porsche.
Just as the dust settles over the 911 GT3's no manual gearbox kerfuffle, the Germans have gone and yanked the yummy naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V8 from the Cayenne S and replaced it with a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6. Is nothing sacred in Porscheland?
Perhaps not... but that's not necessarily a bad thing. After all, Porsche famously once said they'd never build a diesel, but when they did, it was actually rather stellar.
