Porsche 912 is no longer the brand's black sheep
Fri, Dec 12 2014If you haven't looked recently, prices for many vintage Porsche 911s are now well out of the realm for mortal men to purchase. However, the growing values have their advantages because they mean that the 912 is being better accepted as a member of the Porsche family. In a new video, Petrolicious talks to one owner about his mildly modified example while the coupe zips through the backroads and city streets of France. Launched around the time of the 911, the 912 shared its body but retained the four-cylinder engine from the 356, rather than the new six. The older mill helped make the 912 cheaper to buy, but it also tarnished the coupe in the eyes of Porsche fans for years. Much like the four-cylinder 914 and 924, the 912 just seemed like a black sheep in the shadow of its more powerful brother. Following two massive changes to his life, Julien Borne bought a 1967 912 as a project to get back on the road. After hours of welding, wrenching and beating out panels by hand in his grandparents' neglected country house, he crafted this gorgeous example. Porsche 911 RSR in bizarre, terrifying rally crash
Sun, 22 Sep 2013As far as rally crashes go, this one is pretty terrifying. At this month's Hellendoorn Rally, Harry Kleinjan failed to negotiate a turn and drove his Porsche 911 RSR straight into a Jersey barrier, flipping the car into the river.
While it's unclear what caused the accident, German Car Scene notes, "We can see his brakes locking up ahead of the impact, which also ripped both driver's side wheels off, so it may be a case of ill-judged late braking, locking brakes or a jammed throttle." Us? We're betting it might have been bad pace notes. Fortunately for Harry and his co-driver, all indications are that no one was hurt. Driving the million-mile Porsche 356
Fri, 30 Aug 2013Maybe you've seen or heard about the Porsche 356 with almost one-million miles (though it doesn't look like it), but Petrolicious finally has produced a video to show us what it's like to drive the 982,000-mile car. Guy Newmark's beautiful, dark-blue 1964 356C looks great in motion - much better than in photos - and serves to remind us not only what meticulous car care can do for old classics, but that old Porsches were built to last.
So how fastidious is Newmark about maintaining it? He takes the car to his mechanic of 40 years every 3,000 miles for an oil change and to fix anything that needs attention.
Newmark says his 356 "is everything you could want," and that he finds errands to do just to go drive it. We would, too. The next-best thing is to watch the inspiring video below of the well-traveled Porsche.
