The Porsche 944 Turbo Cup car is a race car that has an extremely significant factory race history and is one of Porsches most desirable vehicles. This car is nothing short of extraordinary having a turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine, 4 wheel ventilated disc brakes, recaro racing seats and a roll cage. In late 1985 Porsche developed the 944 turbo cup car to provide amateur enthusiasts with a cost effective entry into motorsports. Although the cup cars were essentially standard production 944 turbos that were more lively and well suited for track use, the factory built competition machines were equipped with a magnesium oil sump, a smaller generator, stiffer suspension, reinforced gearbox, wider tires and modified engine components including a revised turbocharger. In addition, the 944 Turbo cup cars were fitted with an eight-point roll cage, manual windows and, for weight saving measures, were stripped of many interior components. According to the Porsche certificate of authenticity, this 944 turbo was originally finished in guard’s red with black leatherette upholstery and equipped as a turbo cup model with US equipment, Pirelli tires and a limited-slip differential. After delivery to a race car driver Robert Bogan, the Porsche participated in the SCCA SSGT, SCCA Pro Playboy/ World Challenge, IMSA Firestone Firehawk Challenge, and won the 12 hour season finale two years in a row 1992-1993. In about 1995 it was restored back to 1986 CS Turbo specifications. There is not a lot of information to be found on these 1986 cars as they were built specifically to compete with the corvette in world challenge. Most of the parts of this car were limited production and evolved into production parts for the “TURBO CUP”. When it was converted into a Firehawk car it was powered by a 3.0L 16 valve engine, ABS breaking system, and the 1990 TURBO CUP suspension and breaks. Our own version of the “Super Seven” 944 S2 Porsche has specially built to combat GM and the Pontiac teams. It had an extremely successful racing history as a Firehawk car. A list of drivers who drove this car was: Hawkins, David Murry, Boris Said, John O’steen, Terry Earwood, Nick Ham, Shawn Hendricks and Manuel Reuiter. 1994 was its last season of Firehawk as a backup car to lead the car which was now a 968. The 944, still finishing in the top five of most races. Eventually, this Turbo Cup was sold to renowned Porsche enthusiast Lloyd Hawkins and completely restored, with the intention of returning the car to its original factory delivered specifications. This 944 Turbo Cup was acquired by Matthew Drendel in 2008 as an integral part of the four cylinder turbocharged Porsche progression. The 944 presents beautifully and, following preparation, would be an ideal candidate for spirited track use.

Chris Harris condemns demonization of Porsche Carrera GT in wake of Walker death
Fri, 06 Dec 2013When something bad happens, it's easy to resort to scapegoating. At least for some of us, that seems to be exactly what has happened following the tragic death of actor Paul Walker and racer Roger Rodas, who were killed on November 30 in a Porsche Carrera GT. Even though officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash, that isn't stopping many theories from being put for - theories that include blaming the Porsche supercar. Rather predictably, not only is the CGT's difficult nature getting examined, but indeed, the nature of all high-performance cars is being put under the public's microscope, with some wondering what the need for all the power is.
A Google search of "Porsche Carrera GT" will find no shortage of articles about the razor-sharp handling and outright speed of the CGT. Pistonheads' Chris Harris has a different, insightful take on both the Carrera GT and the nature of all fast cars. He reflects on the matter, ironically, en route to drive the successor to the car that killed Walker and Rodas, the 900-horsepower 918 Spyder hybrid supercar.
We think it's well worth a read, as it makes a number of good points about modern high-performance automobiles and the way they're used. Click over and take a look.
2014 Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition is the ace of base
Tue, 14 Jan 2014If there's one automaker that certainly doesn't skimp on the special edition models, it's Porsche, and here at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, we're getting our first look at yet another unique take on one of the company's most popular models. It's called the Cayenne Platinum Edition, and while many special models build off of higher-trim vehicles, this one adds a bit of flair to the most basic version of the luxury SUV.
The Platinum Edition is available on Cayennes with the base 3.6-liter V6 or the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. Platinum models are set apart from other models with the addition of silver exterior accents on the grilles, window trim and rear spoiler, as well as the two-tone, black-and-beige interior scheme. It also comes standard with the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, Power Steering Plus, Park Assist, the Convenience Package and Bose audio.
The cost of entry? $63,000 for the naturally aspirated Cayenne or $66,900 for the diesel. That's a full $13,000 more than the base model, but Porsche says it's actually a bargain as opposed to selecting all of those options individually. Have a look below for Porsche's official release.
Porsche tipped to reveal purist's 911 R in Geneva
Thu, Jan 21 2016Update: The 911 R dam has broken well ahead of its official reveal at Geneva. Stay tuned for full coverage, but take a look at this image from Twitter user @PistonHeads and let us know what you think in the comments below. This content is hosted by a third party. With much of the 911 family going turbo, there's room in the lineup for a purist's Porsche: a naturally-aspirated, rear-drive, manual-only model that'll essentially be a stripped-down GT3. The latest reports indicate that this model, initially expected to be called the 911 GT but now more likely to get the 911 R moniker, will be unveiled in Geneva. It's also tipped to wear skinnier tires that will sacrifice grip for a more linear driving experience, and jettison the big wings in favor of a sleeker, more classic profile. What that all boils down to is a GT3 in its essence, and it will likely pack the non-turbo engine from either the GT3 or GT3 RS (pictured above) – or some version thereof. Recall that both the GT3 and the GT3 RS are PDK-only, although Porsche has decided that the next-generation GT3 should give customers the option of shifting for themselves. According to Motoring.com.au, which recently spoke to 911 product line manager August Achleitner, the purist's 911 will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show less than two months from now. "Come to Geneva and you'll find out," said Achleitner "but for now this is all I can talk about." Don't get your hopes up too much, because production is expected to be severely limited, with the entire production run likely to be pre-sold. Related Video:
