January 1970 marked the entrance to the the US market of the Porsche 914. Anyone who has driven a 914 never forgets it; those who have not MUST do so ....When 914 production ended in 1976 the replacements got heavier and more complex. The mid engine layout, a low center of gravity and legendary 911 Porsche suspension made the 914 much more than the sum of it's parts. When in Production Racing competition, the 914 was so good, there was no real viable competition and most cried "unfair"... even today, a modern Mazda Miata is not really up to the task on the track. This car offered now, was produced in 4/1970, and has covered a low 36,892 miles. It still looks brand new. The underside has full factory undercoating, topside and interior has original finishes and materials, and all body rubber is like new. Truly a "Time Capsule" car. (Please refer to the photographs). In the course of examining this car and bringing it back to life, the classic repairs such as shift bushings, fuel hoses, injector seals, brake lines and other critical items were replaced. Our Porsche qualified technician noted that the injectors and wiring looked like new, just needing hoses and seals. The engine was not cleaned, leaving a very slight coating in the engine sump area to clearly show the very low original miles. Summary -One owner (original California pink slip) -New tires (came with original tires) -Original owners manual (Like new) -Complete tools (Very nice!) -Both original front and rear "blue and yellow" license plates verifies it's California heritage since new -All the spare parts (coil, fuses, wiper blades, etc) in the trunk is what the owner left in the car from the early eighties The car was according to our technically oriented investigation, used sparingly from 1970 to approximately 1984, than stored properly from that point. We brought it back to complete operating status, but it is far too nice to run hard at the racetrack.....The color combination, mileage and condition dictate a future of limited use, or museum status. Consumer Reports declares most and least loved cars [w/video]
Wed, Dec 3 2014Consumer Reports is crunching the numbers from its annual owner-satisfaction survey, and part of that process is finding out how attached drivers are to their cars. CR simply asks readers of models up to three years old if they would buy the same vehicle again in light of their entire ownership experience, and tallies the results. After looking at the responses for about 350,000 vehicles, it turns out that people really love a certain California-built, electrically powered luxury sedan. That's right, this year's the overall winner was the Tesla Model S with a whopping 98 percent of owners saying they would purchase another one (the Model S also won this award last year, with 99 percent satisfaction). The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray came in a close second with 95 percent of drivers hoping to park another one in their garage. A few models weren't quite so favored, though. The Nissan Versa Sedan was the least loved model among its owners; a mere 42 percent said that they would purchase another. The aging Jeep Compass didn't do much better, with just 43 percent of drivers willing to buy the softroader again. On average, about 70 percent of owners say they would buy their car again, and only four cars ranked below 50 percent in CR's findings. Check out the video above to see some of the winners and losers in a few of CR's categories. If you're a subscriber, you can check out the full list on its website. Porsche Boxster spied in the buff
Thu, Aug 6 2015Porsche is preparing a significant update to its entry level Boxster convertible, and while visually this might appear to be a simple refresh, the changes are more than skin deep. Following a number of rumors, Porsche will finally make the jump to turbocharged engines on a broad scale, and it starts with this new Boxster. According to our spies, it's the larger side intakes featured on this prototype that give away its smaller, force-induced flat-four engine. The dual exhaust pipes, meanwhile, say Boxster S to us, rather than just the basic model. Beyond the mechanical changes, this marks the first time we've seen the new Boxster completely free of camouflage. We can see that Porsche's stylists – famous for revolutionary designs slowly tweaking the same style for decads on end – adjusted the look of the front and rear fascias. We like the more aggressively canted headlights, which get the same four-pointed LEDs as its big brother, the 911. The slimmer taillights are a minor improvement on the inoffensive lamps fitted to the current car, and serve to take some attention off the all-plastic exhaust surround, which is much more simply styled than the current car's. It should also be noted that the aesthetics featured on the new Boxster are very, very likely to be transferred directly onto the new Cayman. You can check out our full gallery of shots of the all-new, totally undisguised Boxster in the gallery up top. Expect to see the new roadster around this time next year, with a debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show likely. Related Video:
Porsche 911 with VW turbodiesel prepares for LeMons assault
Fri, 21 Mar 2014LeMons racing is a wonderful example that setting limits can actually breed creativity. The series mandates that all entries must cost $500, not counting safety equipment, and that cap forces teams to be ingenious in how they build a racecar. Take for example this diesel-powered Porsche 911, which its creators have dubbed Ferkel the Nein-11, that will be racing in the Sears Pointless race this weekend in Sonoma, California.
This Frankenstein combines a 911 chassis that was originally bought just for its European powertrain and a Volkswagen TDI diesel engine mounted in the rear. After deciding the shell could still be of some use, the team decided to go racing. "We began brainstorming what replacement drivetrain to use for maximum offense and there was really only one answer: a diesel," said Philipp von Weitershausen, one of the team captains, to Jalopnik. They bought a 1998 Jetta TDI on the cheap and started figuring out a way to hack the engine into the bay. To pay respect to the donor, the VW's trunk was highly modified (and drilled) and grafted onto the back of Ferkel.
This team isn't a newcomer to LeMons. Its last car was a classic VW Beetle with a Subaru engine and dual controls, named Ferdinand the Bug, which could be driven from the left or right side. It's quite a sight.
