1968 Porsche 912

Here is a rare opportunity to own a vintage Porsche.  Drive away in this all stock, with 5 speed, 5 gauge dash.  Engine is from a 1966 912.  Original color was Sand/Beige.  Runs very well, drives / handles very well.  All suspension has been rebuilt.  New brakes, new tires.  Many new parts.  I have owned since 2002.  Previous owner was from Ohio, he was at least the second owner.  This car has been rusty, and has undergone at least two significant restorations.  It is very solid now, needs no body repairs, no rust as it is now.  Mileage on odometer is 106,431 miles.  (and I still drive it some, so the miles will increase.)  The odometer works.  Unknown miles on engine.  The car has attended many car shows and has been to most of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix weekends during the past decade.  Drive it away, it is ready to go.  Most everything is complete and working, with a few minor exceptions.  Much more details below.  Videos and pictures at links below.

Previous Owner restoration:

During the late 1990’s he had significant body work completed.  New rockers welded in, parts of the front pan were welded in.  (not a complete pan replacement).  The original floors are still in the car, with a few areas where there is a patch.  The under body has other areas where he had patches welded in, it was done with good quality, but it is visible to the eye where the welding has taken place.  The paint on the car looks very nice.  Above body work is very good, smooth and nice looking.  There is some filler on the body work, but appears that most of work was welded in and finished off with some filler.  There are a few very small bubbles which have been there since I purchased it.  Overall the body work and paint job is good, but getting old.  There are minor chips around the gas filler, driver door, etc., no dents, no significant scratches in the paint.  The inside of the door jambs, inside of the trunk and engine compartment were painted white.  The engine had the top end rebuilt with new or refurbished heads.  I don’t have receipts for this but it appears to be true.  There is an electric fuel pump in the contraband box and a fuel pressure regulator in the engine compartment.  The previous owner disabled the heating, I don’t know why, but I don’t drive it in cold weather so it was not a problem for me.  I don’t know what all is missing regarding the heaters.  There are no flex tubes under the car going from the heat exchanger to the body, the openings for the heater hoses in the engine compartment are blocked off.

During my ownership:

  1. Rear end, underneath:  The rusty torsion tube and surrounding area was removed and replaced with 1968 912 Porsche Torsion Tube with spring plates, torsion bars, from Spokane Washington.  Welded back together from outside and inside of the car.  New bushings were installed along with new shocks.

  2. Front end, underneath:  Suspension: torsion bars, rack, A arms, shocks, were removed.  All mounting points were strengthened with welded steel.  Replaced rusty old suspension with replacement suspension from a 1973 911 from Utah with all new bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints and shocks replaced.  The 73 allows for better ball joints and vented front discs.  (Also, you can install anti sway bars if you want.)  The floor pans are original, a few patches, no existing holes, and are painted on the inside, and somewhat painted underneath.  The car still has a good bit of the original undercoating.  The inside of the front trunk floor is painted, there are metal patches, some fiberglass, and it is clean and strong.

  3. Rear axles: replaced, new bearings, boots, etc.

  4. Brakes:  Rebuilt calipers all around, new rubber and steel brake lines.  Brakes have been recently inspected and each wheel grabs and releases as expected.

  5. Carbs:  Rebuilt Solexes.  Replaced the air cleaners with K&N.  I have the original air cleaners.

  6. Distributor:  Replaced the distributor with one that is tuned for the 912 engine.  RSR0012

  7. Fuel Pump:  Rebuilt the mechanical fuel pump recently.

  8. The battery is brand new.  It hasn’t started the car 10 times yet.

  9. Under dash gauges:  Voltage and Cylinder head temp gauges are installed and working.

  10. Hood shocks:  the two in front and one in back are replaced and hold up the hood/lid.

  11. Decals:  The car has vinyl decals that are similar to the ones used in the 1967 Rally of Poland.  I designed these using historical pictures and had these made by a specialty firm that makes decals for race cars.  These can be removed, but I get many complements on them and the fact that they pay tribute to Sobieslaw Zasada who won the 1967 Polish rally in a 912.

Not Working:  Washers.  Four way flashers.  The temp gauge is very erratic.  Sometimes it works, but this is why I installed the cyl head temp gauge.  No clock – there is a non-working turbo boost pressure gauge instead. (No, there is not a turbo on the engine, and I don’t know why this gauge is there…)    The horn button on steering wheel doesn’t work but there is an auxiliary button and it works.  It is not the original horn.  The reverse lights do not work.

Other general info:

The interior is very nice and vintage looking.  The car appears to have the original seats, headliner and door panels.  The radio looks original, it is definitely old and working.  I am not an expert on this car, but I think this is the original interior.  The interior is old but very good condition.  There is a crack in the dash.  The driver seat bottom could use a new cushion.  The back jump seat on the driver side has a burn mark, thanks to the dumb ass welder (me).  The window crank on the driver side is missing the knob.  The window vent on the passenger is complete and closed but doesn’t open.  The driver window goes up and down with some difficulty.  The wheels are painted silver, they aren’t pretty.  I have the hubcaps which are in fair condition.  All lights (except four way flashers) work.  The rally fog lights work.  I have the horn grills.  The radio works.  There are speaker grills in the doors, but no speakers.  The speaker in the dash works.  All dash gauges and knobs / switches work.  The window seals, door rubber, trunk and hood rubber is old, but in fair condition, some better than others.  The window rubber seems newer than the rest.  Some rubber is missing on the passenger door.  The pedal cluster could use new bushings.  The shifter could use new bushings (I replaced one, and have the others but didn’t install them.)  The rear tail lights have hair line cracks, the fronts are okay.  The car has four aftermarket seat belts.

Other notes:

  • Tires are 185 65 15 Fuzions. matching, clean and probably less than 1000 miles

  • Body number under hood and on door post match: 12805416

  • Engine number: 745129 (these numbers are in the pictures, but you need to view on a large screen)

  • Distributor is RSR 0012 from Classic & Speed parts in Arcadia CA.

  • Engine does not leak oil (no drips, but there is some oil on the engine).

  • Engine does not blow smoke when starting or running.

  • No tool kit.  Modern floor jack included, no original jack.

  • Carb float tool and sync tool included.

  • Owners manual and various shop manuals included.

Overall:  This is a very fun car to drive.  I have driven the car about 500 miles per year, sometimes short hauls to work, other times long hauls on country roads.  I have never had problems with it.  The valves are adjusted, the timing is set, it runs good.  I change the oil every year.  (approx. 500 miles driven per year)  Most things on the car that wear out have been replaced and only have minimal use.  In the recent years I have just driven it and keep it tuned, no major work has been required.

The car is in Crafton PA, near Pittsburgh/Greentree/Carnegie.

Xcar considers the Porsche 911 GT3's PDK

Fri, May 29 2015

Porsche ruffled some feathers when it unveiled the latest 911 GT3 a couple of years ago with a dual-clutch transmission instead of an old-school manual. The rationale was (and remains) that the PDK makes the enthusiast's Elfen faster than it would be with a stick. The purists scoffed, but Zuffenhausen held firm – and even did the same with the even more hardcore GT3 RS. In its latest video, the boys at Xcar set out to find out if the GT3 with its fancy automated gearbox is as good as the previous model (or as good as the current model could be) with a manual – and took in some of the track toy's other trickery while they were at it. Check out the video above to find out what conclusion they reached.

Porsche names Oliver Blume as new CEO

Wed, Sep 30 2015

With Matthias Muller stepping up to take over as the new chief executive of the entire Volkswagen Group, the Porsche division is going to need a new CEO of its own. Taking Muller's place will be Dr. Oliver Blume, who assumes his new responsibilities on October 1. Blume is no stranger to the higher ranks at Porsche, having served for over two years now as the executive in charge of the company's production and logistics. In that capacity, he oversaw the establishment of the workshop where the 918 Spyder was built by hand, and the expansion of the Leipzig plant to handle production of the Macan and Panamera. He'll now be stepping into bigger shoes, however, as chairman of the board of management – essentially the company's chief executive. At the same time, Porsche has also named Detlev von Platen as its head of sales and marketing. Von Platen has for the past seven years headed up the North American office, which recently lost its VP as well to Rolls-Royce, so they're going to need to make some new appointments in Atlanta. The previous marketing chief Bernhard Maier is moving to the Czech Republic to take over as CEO of Skoda. The company's CFO Lutz Meschke has also been named as deputy chairman of the executive board. The appointments come amidst a giant game of musical chairs within the Volkswagen Group. Aside from the ousting of former supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech five months ago, the diesel emissions scandal has seen the German industrial giant cleaning house within its top ranks and R&D staff. Most notable was the resignation of Martin Winterkorn, whose position at the head of the group's management board Muller will now assume. Supervisory Board of Porsche AG appoints Detlev von Platen Head of Sales and Marketing Oliver Blume is new Chairman of the Executive Board Stuttgart. At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG appointed Dr. Oliver Blume (47) the Chairman of the Executive Board of the sports car manufacturer effective October 1, 2015. Blume succeeds Matthias Muller (62), who was appointed by the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG to be the new Chairman of the Board of Management of the Wolfsburg-based group. It has been exactly five years since Muller left Volkswagen to become the CEO of Porsche AG. Since the beginning of 2013, Blume has been a member of the Porsche Executive Board responsible for Production and Logistics.

Noted Porsche collector Magnus Walker learns what a TED Talk is firsthand

Wed, 23 Jul 2014

Porsche collector Magnus Walker has the name and looks of a Viking, but once he starts talking about his life story and what drives him, he's an absolutely fascinating guy. Walker recently gave a Ted Talk at a Tedx conference at UCLA and claimed he didn't really understand the idea behind the speeches. You would never know it, though. Walker is as gifted a speaker as he is a talented restorer of some seriously cool Porsches.
Walker's talk is titled "Go with Your Gut Feeling," and it amounts to his autobiography. He recounts his birth in England, dropping out of school at 15 and moving to the US at 19. Once in Los Angeles, he started selling second-hand clothes and grew it into a fashion business.
Of course, what makes him interesting to us is his passion for Porsches. He fell in love with them when he saw a white 911 as a child at the Earl's Court Motor Show in England, but Walker waited until the '90s to buy his first one. From there he started racing and eventually restoring them. Since the documentary Urban Outlaw about him was released, Magnus has become famous for the love of the brand.
