Porsche 911 goes up in flames at New York Auto Show
Thu, Mar 31 2016It was a bad day for the 2016 DUB Show Tour after a Porsche 911 Turbo associated with the tour caught fire ahead of its 2016 New York Auto Show dates. And yes, the entire fiasco was caught on video. It's not clear how the fire started, but reports from the scene and video footage show smoke pouring off the 911. Worryingly, the fire seems to have been inside the Jacob Javits Convention Center, after New York's NBC affiliate reported smoke "spewing" throughout the sprawling facility. Workers can be heard shouting to get away from the burning 993 while at least one brave soul attacked the flaming sports car with a fire extinguisher. Despite the seriousness of the video, an aftershot – shown above – from the guy behind the video, Instagram user Zuumy, shows that there doesn't seem to be that much damage on the surface. The car just looks very, very dusty and dirty. According to WNBC, the New York Fire Department hasn't received any incident reports about the fire. And while it's part of the show, there's no reference to a 993 911 on the DUB Show Tour's Instagram or official page. Bummer, we know. You can check out the video of the blaze below. Nick Murray's problematic Porsche 911 shows the power of a viral video
Fri, 18 Apr 2014When Nick Murray took delivery of his 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S in June 2013, he had saved for it for the past five years. He didn't just pluck a random 911 off a dealer lot. He specially ordered his car with thousands of dollars in extras tailored just to him, and he captured all of the options on his YouTube channel. The love affair didn't last long. Eventually the channel became a place for Nick to air his growing list of grievances about his deteriorating 911. Eventually, his mix of righteous indignation and sarcasm went viral.
By late December, he had already had four warranty repairs done on the car. Things got much worse in March. The computers began resetting whenever Nick drove over large bumps. There was also an acrid, electrical smell that occasionally permeated the cabin. Murray filed for Lemon Law protection. Porsche Cars North America contacted him for the first time to fix the problem, but it didn't help.
Things culminated in April when Murray put up a new video that showed more troubles. He began arbitration with Porsche and asked for either his full purchase price back or an exact replacement. The company countered with a portion of what the car was worth, based on its mileage. Murray refused and turned to his YouTube watchers for help. He asked them to spread the word, and the video went viral with over 800,000 views as of this writing. Supporters posted it multiple times on Porsche's Facebook and Twitter sites.

Weigh in with your own thoughts in the comments section. Let's kick off.  FIRST QUARTER Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore liveblogs the first quarter. F9 We'll count this as a car commercial. The latest edition of the Fast & Furious looks like it well, will have cars. We'll punt on further comment. PORSCHE I like it. Creative. Sort of a Night at the Museum feel. The guards stage a theft and then a car chase. The Taycan looked good. Get fired up — the future for Porsche is electric. The spot is meant to illustrate how fun that can be. I don't need any convincing.  SECOND QUARTER Associate Editor Byron Hurd is liveblogging the second quarter. HYUNDAI Hyundai checked in super early with their Sonata "Smaht Pahk" commercial, which manages to score points for being both cute and clever while also being a fairly good commercial in a vacuum. We saw it last week, so there were no surprises here, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Fun note: If you go to the Sonata landing page on Hyundai's web site, you can choose "plain old English" or "the Boston way" for your language; the latter will translate the page. Enjoy. FORD Hi ho, West Coast Editor James Riswick here. Apparently, the guys in Detroit didn't get the Mustang Mach E ad featuring Idris Elba and a whole boat load of awesome old Mustangs. Pretty sure it's bound to be viewed the exact same way as the car itself: traditionalists will be aghast, while non-car people will be intrigued by a new, all-electric, crossover version of one of the few cars they've heard of. GENESIS They're coming more rapidly now. Genesis gets some love thanks to Chrissy Teigen and John Legend; this was another known quantity, but Hyundai's luxury brand managed another solid entry here thanks to its choice of stars. Teigen and Legend got the chance to throw back to the latter's "Sexiest Man Alive" honors, which Teigen often teases him for. Another solid all-around spot. GMC/HUMMER Are there just no surprises left? Don't tell me; I know the answer. LeBron James fronts the revived Hummer, which will be an EV sold as a GMC.
