1971 Porsche 911 T Targa 2.2. Original color was gold, which can still be seen in a few obscure spots.  Zenith carbs. Everything appears original except the side mirrors which a previous owner installed.  Not sure about the front nudge bar.  Rear window is removed, but in good shape in storage.  The car deserves a complete restoration and I don't have the time or money to do it.

I bought the car 14 years ago and it was my daily driver for a couple of years.  It was insanely fun to drive, but I realized that the suspension pan was rusting and I took it off the road to weld in new pan. Also painted front suspension parts and gas tank with POR-15.  Front is in good shape, but I found that rocker panels were rusted out and needed replacement, as well as the top of the quarter panels where they meet the rear window.  I got interested in other things and the car has been sitting all these years.  I religiously started it regularly for year after year, but I failed to start it for about a year and I think the carbs have varnished up with old gas.  I bought a carb rebuild kit to replace accelerator pumps, but it still wont run right.  It will run for a few seconds but won't idle.  I think the carbs need a complete rebuild.

Floorpans and bottom appear solid. Other minor rust in hood and trunk inner lids and bottom of drivers side fender. Suspension , brakes, electrical, interior in good shape. One heat exchanger is rusted, other is stainless.

The car ran great before going into storage other than a syncro problem with second gear.  It would have to put it into second very slowly or it would grind.  Interior is in good shape considering its over 40 years old.  Normal cracks in the dash.  Windows and interior controls all work fine.  Targa top needs a liner.

Car comes with rocker panel parts, rear window, and various odds and ends as can be seen in the photos.  Odometer shows 30884, actual mileage is unknown.

Janis Joplin's psychedelic Porsche nets $1.76M at auction

Sat, Dec 12 2015

Even though she famously asked the Lord for a Mercedes-Benz, Janis Joplin loved her 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet with its psychedelic mural called History of the Universe. The mind-bending droptop went for an amazing $1.76 million at a recent RM Sotheby's auction in New York City and shattered the original estimate of between $400,000 and $600,000 for the sale. Seven bidders in a fight over the trippy car helped push up the price, and this is now the most ever paid for a 356 at public auction. According to RM Sotheby's listing, Joplin bought the Porsche used in 1968 and quickly gave it to a roadie for her band Big Brother and the Holding Company to create the mural. He covered the entire exterior with a variety of motifs including a landscape across the passenger side, butterfly on the driver's door, a rainbow connecting two faces at the back, and an eye on the front. Joplin proudly drove the convertible regularly until her death at just 27 years old in 1970. After the singer's passing, Joplin's siblings eventually took control of the groovy Porsche but made the odd choice to repaint the car in the original Dolphin Gray. They eventually realized that was an awful idea, and two artists used photos to recreate the mural. The family then loaned the 356 to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH, in 1995, and this auction was the first time the convertible went up for sale since Joplin bought it. You can get a great look at all the psychedelic details in the gallery above. PSYCHEDELIC JANIS JOPLIN PORSCHE SHATTERS ESTIMATE, BRINGS RECORD $1.76 MILLION IN NEW YORK CITY NEW YORK (December 10, 2015) - Tonight at the RM Sotheby's 'Driven By Disruption' auction in New York City, The Janis Joplin 1964 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Cabriolet sold for $1,760,000*, well over the pre-sale estimate of $400/600,000. Spurring a spirited bidding contest between collectors in the room and on the phones, seven bidders competed for the iconic daily driver of legendary rocker Janis Joplin. The outstanding sales price represents a new record for any Porsche 356 sold at public auction. Purchased by the Queen of Rock'n'Roll from a used car lot in 1968, Joplin engaged Dave Richards, a friend and roadie with her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, to customize it with a psychedelic 'History of the Universe' mural, rendering it one of the first true 'art cars' and one of the most famous and important Porsches of all time.

eGarage video features Helmuth Bott's personal Porsche 959 prototype

Fri, 12 Apr 2013

"We thought we were going to build a super-911," said Peter Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG of the development of the Porsche 959. That was before it started getting expensive. At that point, Helmuth Bott, Porsche R&D director got frightened. Costs ballooned because of the all-wheel drive, sequential turbocharging and other technology Porsche had never even thought about when it set out to build a 911 to compete in Group B. Schutz continued, "The amount of resources we were committing got totally out of hand." Instead of pulling the plug, Bott doubled down and drew on the strength of his brilliant team to build a car whose impact is still echoing aross the industry.
"It's probably one of our most prized possessions" says Don Leatherwood, Director of the Brumos collection where Dr. Bott's personal prototype resides, and where Frazer Spowart went to see the car and create a video for eGarage. Check out the sights and sounds of the 959 before it was the 959, and get personal takes on the car from Hurley Haywood, Peter Schutz and Don Leatherwood. Keep reading to see the video.

2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed statue unveiled

Thu, 11 Jul 2013

Each year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a single marque is celebrated with a large and ornate "Central Feature" sculpture, with recent automakers including Audi in 2009, Alfa Romeo in 2010, Jaguar in 2011 and Lotus last year. This year, Porsche gets the honor, and it is using the opportunity to commemorate 50 years of the 911.
The sculpture features three generations of the 911 towering over the Goodwood House. The most recent 991 911 has the lowest position, with an original 1963 car second highest and a 1973 2.7 RS at the top of the pile. Be sure to check out the sculpture for yourself in the gallery of images above.
