First of all let me start out by telling you that I am a jaded car guy. It takes a lot to impress me. My daily driver is a R-Gruppe style car that I built with my own hands. I’ve sold dozens of really nice vintage Porsches and this one takes the cake.

We had been pursuing this particular automobile for about a year. It was a friend of a friend deal. The car hadn’t been driven in over 20 years, but had been stored properly in a climate-controlled garage. When the gentleman who owned the car moved from California to Washington State in 1989 he stopped driving it. Even though he didn’t drive it, he was very attached and only sold it when it became a financial necessity.

When we finally got the car, we really had no idea what kind of shape it was in. Obviously we had looked it over, but until you get them up on a lift and spend a day poking around do you really know what you have. Being a 2-owner California car we were pretty sure that that there would be little to no rust. The more we looked the happier we were. Hands down, this was the nicest, most original, rust free car we have ever had. The floors are original, all the glass is original, and the rubber floor mats and rubber pedal covers look like new.  The front pan appears to have been replaced some time ago properly.  After that they had installed and Optima sealed battery to protect from any further damage.   There are only 2 spots on the entire car with any hint of rust. One right behind the door handle on the passenger door, and one right below the rear window on the drivers side. They are very small and are underneath the paint. I made sure to take good, close up shots of both. It’s so minor that until you look at the car for a good amount of time you don’t see them.

The interior in general is in fantastic condition; original dash is in very good condition and a perfect original headliner. Under the dust, the paint was obviously in great shape. According to the prior owner it had been repainted in the mid-80’s to a very high standard. The car was originally Ivory and although we never like to see a color change, this was done very well indeed. Looking over the car in general it was obvious that the car had been well cared for and luckily left stock.

After our inspection a fresh battery was hooked up and to our amazement all of the lights, turn signals etc. worked, as they should. We held our breath and pushed the sunroof switch……It worked as well!!!!

Next we drained all the fluids and replaced them with fresh. We then cranked over the motor to establish oil pressure, it had pressure instantly.

Next we hooked up a fuel source and crossed our fingers, the motor started right up and sounded great! Not able to contain ourselves we drove the car around the block to check for leaks and make sure the transmission was good. The car drove great! We couldn’t believe it. It did have a few leaks and we wanted to make sure the tensioners were good, so the motor was dropped out. We did a leak down and were not surprised to see between 5-6%. Given the good results we decided to only do a valve adjustment, re-seal and check the tensioners. It’s a good thing that we did because one tensioner was about to come apart. We replaced the tensioners with an updated 930 part and also replaced the clutch. All the standard tune-up items were done, the motor was cleaned up and detailed as well. While we were at it, we rebuilt the entire brake system and had the gas tank cleaned. The Weber carbs were gone through and the distributor was thoroughly cleaned and checked.  The heat exchangers were a bit tired so they were replaced with SSI’s.

The cases on the motor are 1968 sand cast aluminum, while the top end and fan are all the proper 1966 items. We assume that many years ago there must have been some sort of issue with the bottom end and it was replaced.

Once this was all done I drove the car for a few days to make sure all was good.  I can’t describe how great this car is. Everything works, the Frankfurt radio, the sunroof, the heat (we did not test the Webesto gas heater). The gearbox is great, syncros are perfect and it shifts as good as any 901 I’ve ever driven. The car starts hot or cold and does not smoke or make any unseemly noises.

I did notice that the speedo seemed to be reading a bit fast…Then I realized it is in KMH, not sure what the story is, perhaps the car was originally delivered in Germany and then brought to the US.

It is an absolute treat to drive, light, nimble and something a bit intangible that is impossible to convey and must be experienced.

The car comes complete with jack, spare tire and COA.

5 highlights from the 2018 Petersen Automotive Museum Auction

Fri, Nov 30 2018

From the avant garde exterior design to the collection of vehicles between the walls, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is one of the coolest car museums in the U.S., and possibly the world. Among several others, the Petersen has two featured exhibits, The Porsche Effect and Legends of L.A. But the museum has a different type of viewing coming up at which you could touch, or even buy, a variety of special vehicles. After hosting its SoCal auction on the coast in Santa Monica for several years, RM Sotheby's has moved the event to the more central location of the museum. In addition to several works of art, the auction which takes place the weekend of December 7, will show several dozens of blue-chip vehicles, chosen by RM Sotheby's 30 car specialists. After sorting through lots that range from microcars to new-age supercars, here are five of the highlights that caught our eyes. 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti Projected Value: $22,000,000-$26,000,000 Without question, this is the crown jewel of the entire show. As the eldest and most experienced of the 11 total Ferrari lots, its estimated value of $26 million is more than five times the values of the other five cars listed below combined. From the jump, Ferrari threw the 290 into the line of fire. Starting its life with a four-cylinder 860 Monza engine and a Tipo 520 chassis, its first race was the Mille Miglia. Peter Collins was behind the wheel and racing photographer Louis Klemantaski was his copilot. Ferrari took the top five spots in the race, with this car, chassis No. 0628, finishing second. It went on to see multiple races and took on multiple forms, including a V12 swap at one point. After switching through the hands of multiple owners, it was sent to Ferrari Classiche in Maranello, where it was restored to its form at the time of the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring. It retains its original chassis, original bodywork, and original transmission, and houses the V12 from its 290 MM spec. The restoration was completed in 2015, and the car remains in incredible shape today. 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone Projected Value: $2,100,000-$2,500,000 Simply put, the Miura is one of the most significant supercars, and therefore one of the most important cars, of all time. Its two-seat, mid-engined configuration seismically shifted what a performance could and should look like, and its V12 gave it the power to be the fastest car in the world when it debuted.

2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS First Drive [w/video]

Imagine a regular Porsche 911 GT3 in your garage, parked next to a brand-new, no-options Boxster. Now imagine your garage with just a 911 GT3 RS inside. From a cost standpoint, you could have either for roughly the same amount of money. Trying to figure out if the RS goodies are worth the $50,000 over a standard 911 GT3 – roughly the price of that no-frills Boxster – might drive you mad. We're trying to suss this out at 120 miles per hour on the long downhill back straight at Road Atlanta. It's pouring. Rivulets of water are streaming across the track. Ahead, in a 911 Turbo leading the pack, is Le Mans- and Daytona-winning driver David Donohue. He's helpfully warned us to avoid nipping the curbing, since that's where water pools. Hydroplaning could end someone's day. Through the blinding spray, Donohue mercifully has reduced the pace. There's enough speed to evaluate what the GT3 RS does well, which is essentially everything. There's also enough time to figure out what sort of sports car this is. Horsepower swells to an even 500 and torque to 338 pound-feet – bumps of 25 hp and 14 lb-ft over the GT3. As is fitting and proper for the traditional sports car par excellence, at the top of the large and expensive 911 heap is the GT3. While the base is shaken by the encroachment of turbocharging on basic 911 models, the summit is, like mountain air, all-natural. The GT3 was subject to a beyond-galling recall due to faulty con-rods with a penchant for ventilating crankcases and starting catastrophic fires, but storms crash upon every peak. Progress is inevitable for German engineers. The GT3 RS is the 911 reforged in those embarrassing fires. The GT3 itself was a false summit, but the RS is the real deal. Underneath the very purple bodywork, this is a lither and more athletic thing than the already superb GT3. Lightweighting is accomplished with a healthy dose of carbon fiber on the engine cover and the frunk. The roof, with a slick-looking depressed slash running longitudinally, is made of magnesium. That serves to lower the center of gravity, Porsche assures us. Even the rear silencer is made of titanium. In total, the RS is 22 pounds lighter than the GT3 it's based on – seemingly small gains considering all the exotic materials, but less so considering what's been added back. The RS is also more powerful, thanks to a 200cc displacement increase.

New info on how VW, Porsche, Audi V6 TDI engine cheat works

Mon, Aug 8 2016

The German newspaper Bild am Sonntag is reporting that US investigators have found three pieces of software that work in concert to turn off the emissions control equipment in certain diesel models after a set period of time. The engine in question, the 3.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, was found in certain Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne models – the sale of which was suspended in the US late last year. Since most emissions compliance testing takes around 20 minutes, the software in the three VW Group models shuts off the emissions control equipment after 22 minutes, a straightforward end run around the testing. Remember that the 3.0-liter TDI engines aren't included in the big buyback and recall program announced for the smaller 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI engines. The 3.0-liter engines will likely get their own program, but we don't know when to expect it or exactly what it will look like. Last month, California rejected a proposed fix for the larger TDI engines, and VW went back to the drawing board. Since the company is unlikely to create two fixes, one for California and one for the rest of the nation, the company can't really proceed until they figure out a solution California will accept. The EPA hasn't officially commented on the report, and we don't know how Bild am Sonntag came across the information, but we'll be closely watching what emerges after this report. Related Video:
