Here's a car with huge potential. I bought it to fix up, and only got about halfway done. It's a 326, and I only have a few thousand miles on it since a complete rebuild. I chose a mild performance cam, so it idles smoothly. (about 292 duration, .490 lift, roller tip steel rockers) It has an Edelbrock 4bbl performer carb that I spent a lot of time getting the jets and metering rods just right. I still have the original 2bbl Rochester 2G and manifold if you want to go back to numbers-matching condition, but if you want to do that, I'd like to have the Edelbrock carb and intake manifold back. It is a factory air conditioning car, but it needs a compressor and condenser, but the hard-to-find compressor bracket is on the engine, and all the appropriate parts are on the firewall and in the cab. The transmission is the original Super-Turbine 300 2-speed, and it runs well and shifts smoothly. I also completely re-wired the car (with the exception of the trunk harness) with a perfect match of the original from M&H Electric. I put a new molded carpet in from Year One as well. Because it's been sitting the headliner is starting to fall apart, but if you exercise the "Buy-It-Now" option, I will install a new headliner for you before you pick it up. Basically it's an unmolested original. The bad news is a few years ago I was rear-ended on the side of the freeway when I stopped to help at the scene of an accident. The driver's side quarter panel and bumper are munched, but it still drives fine and tracks straight. I drove it to work for a while after that, then parked it when I got married, and now the wife wants me to "thin the herd". The good news is that the winner of this car gets included in the deal, a 67 Tempest parts car to go with it. That way you have a donor to repair the rear end. The parts car has a straight bumper and quarter panel that could be pasted right into this Le Mans. Also, someone before me put the wrong header panel and grille pieces in, so from the front it looks like a '66. The parts car also has the correct header panel, good grille inserts, and even a spare set of fenders and a good hood for "just in case". The parts car does not have a rear-end, but I can help load it with my tractor. I can deliver for a small fee within a couple hundred miles or so, upon prior arrangement.

Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Tue, Jun 19 2018

For General Motors, the W platform just kept giving and giving and giving for decade after decade, serving as the basis of Buick Regals, Oldsmobile Intrigues, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, and many, many more models. The final and most powerful Pontiac W-Body, the sixth-generation Grand Prix GTP, rolled off assembly lines for the 1997 through 2003 model years. Here's one in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard. GM bolted the supercharged 3800 V6 into vast numbers of cars during this era, providing a deep reservoir of cheap blowers for unwise high-boost projects. 240 front-tire-charring horses, complete with a Roots-type blower scream from the Eaton supercharger under the hood. I see plenty of blown 3800s during my junkyard travels, from the Bonneville SSEi to the Oldsmobile LSS. Depressingly, GM stopped putting manual transmissions in the Grand Prix during the 1993 model year, so '01 GTP owners had to take the four-speed slushbox. This one came close to the magic 200,000-mile mark, but fell 25,000 short. The interior took a beating during its life, ending its time on the road with shredded upholstery and dirty panels. Seven-band graphic equalizers were all the rage during the 1980s, but GM kept the tradition alive into our current century. This content is hosted by a third party. Drive plays Smokey, Bandit with turbo Trans Am

Sun, Jun 28 2015

The modern trend for powertrains can be summed up with the simple maxim: cut displacement and add forced induction. Whether you are looking at the just-introduced 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or a BMW M3, this adage holds true. However, Pontiac's attempt at the idea goes all the way back in 1980 with the Firebird Trans Am and its turbocharged 4.9-liter V8. Drive's Mike Musto takes out a 1981 example to explain what makes this largely forgotten muscle car so special, and it certainly isn't performance. While a 4.9-liter V8 might sound like a lot in the modern world, keep in mind that only few years before the second-generation Trans Am was available with up to a staggering 7.5-liters of displacement. Turbocharging of road cars in the early '80s was quite archaic by today's standards, and the Firebird only managed around 200 horsepower with this mill. Without much go, the turbo Trans Am made up for a lack of power with lots of show. As Musto points out, the famous flaming chicken adorns practically every surface you can see on the coupe, and boost lights on the hood illuminate when the turbo is spinning. Musto still finds a lot to like about the turbo Trans Am. He even calls it "Burt Reynolds as an automobile." Find out why the coupe is so special in this entertaining clip.

'We're not a hedge fund': Porsche plans to curtail speculators and flippers

Tue, May 30 2017

A sizable number of speculators view cars as an investment. Rare or unusual models are quickly snapped up and either parked for years or flipped for a profit. Cars from automakers like Porsche and Ferrari are more prone than others, and at least some people behind these models are getting a bit tired of it. While it's difficult to police what goes on after you sell a car, Porsche has some plans that might curtail the problem before it starts. Andreas Preuninger, the head of GT road-car development and the man behind the new 911 GT3, spoke to Car and Driver at a recent event. "I personally like to see my cars being used," he said. "That's what we build them for. They are just too good to be left to stand and collect dust." One recent example of this rampant speculation is the 911 R. While the special manual-only model sold for $185,950 when new, used versions were selling for nearly $1.3 million just months after it went on sale. While the car is a masterpiece and an instant classic, a good number will be parked and simply used as art and not the rolling testaments to the man/machine interface they were intended to be. The concern over valuations has become so fierce that some owners are upset that Porsche is offering the new 911 GT3 with a manual transmission, fearing that it may hurt the value of the 911 R. "When I said we're not a hedge fund, I'm talking to those people who are yelling at us for offering the manual transmission similar to the R," Preuninger said. "But if there are people wanting to buy cars like that, then as a company we should try to fulfill that, to meet that demand." It seems Porsche is keeping a close eye on who is flipping cars. Since there is often far more demand than supply with certain models, the German automaker has a name for every car before it's built. Buyers with bad reputations might not even make the wait list.
