I have owned this
wagon for almost 24 years (Sept of 1990). It has been kept inside most all of
this time. Sadly it is time to make some changes in my life and have chosen to
let it go. It has always been my dream to make a real 2 door GTO wagon out of it
as though it was a one of a kind concept car but never had the means to finish
the project. Several years ago I parted a beat GTO and saved the doors and cut
out the back roll up window section to weld into the wagon to create a two door
hardtop wagon. These parts are available but don’t come with the wagon. I am
selling just the car in this sale. I do have a lot of extra parts I have
collected and intend to sell after the wagon sells but will give the buyer
first option at these parts. Some of these being 1965 GTO Bucket Seats, a 1965
Tri Power manifold and carbs, and a bored 428 block with new pistons, rings,
cam and most parts to build a complete motor. I disassembled the
front clip, cleaned and repaired each part, hung, primed and painted all of
them individually. The GTO hood is painted on both sides and is very straight
as are both fenders. All of this was done with great attention to detail. The
grill and header panels were replace with GTO grills and header panels. The top of the dash was also repainted while
the windshield was out and an original dash pad was added. I had a new
windshield installed and it is still in great condition. The two rear side
windows have been removed to reseal and were tinted. While they were out I
cleaned and painted around the frame as I did around the windshield frame. I
have also cleaned and painted the underside of the car a few years back and the
floor pans are still in good shape. The motor is 1969
‘428’cu in. 2 bolt main from a Bonneville Wagon, cast # 9792968. It is still a
stock motor with about 140,000 miles. I believe the wagon to be around the same
mileage but had to replace the odometer several years ago. I have added an
Edelbrock 650 carburetor with electric choke, an HEI distributer and an Accel coil/cap,
a new power steering pump, a new clutch fan, starter, battery cables, all new
hoses and belts, and a chrome one wire alternator. The exhaust was upgraded to a
2” aluminized system with Magnaflow mufflers and tips, it sounds great and was
very professionally installed. The original ST310 two
speed transmission was rebuilt and works great. The combination works great
together and will bury the speedometer which I have done. When it was installed
I bought a new Hughes mild stall torque converter and new transmission lines.
It still has the column shift automatic. I have an automatic floor console
setting in the car but it is not hooked up yet. I have most of the linkage
which will come with the car. The radiator was
replaced with a 4 core desert cooler from OPG. The heater core and heater fan
were also replaced with new parts. The front steering has
had all of the following parts replaced, coil springs, KYB gas shocks, 1 1/4
front sway bar which eliminated front end roll, center link, tie rod ends,
pitman arm, a new 2 3/4 turn steering box, A arm bushings, as well as many other
parts. The steering is tight and you will be amazed how well it handles in the
corners. I have upgraded the master cylinder to a twin cylinder and added a
power drum. It was a single cylinder with no power originally. It has air
shocks on the rear and a light duty trailer hitch. Inside the wagon you
will find a color matched 442 steering wheel, color matched carpet in the back
and color matched bucket seats. The wagon did not have carpet but came from the
factory with color matched rubber floor mats and a rubber cargo mat with chrome
rub bars. All are still in great shape.
The cargo mat has been stored away the whole time I have owned the car and
still has the jute backing on it. The rear seat has come apart at the seams in
some places but is repairable. It appears someone had cut away the bead causing
the stitching to come out. The headliner is torn and needs replacing. I have a
new one in a box that comes with the car. I have added a GTO grab bar over the
glove box. I installed a Sony stereo in the glove box to maintain the factory
dash and installed a new dual cone speaker from The rear window is in
good working condition but has been scratched down the center due to rubbing on
something inside the tailgate. The Car still has the original key and all the
locks work. The bumpers are
straight but the rear may need to be rechromed at some point. You can get in this car
and drive it short of the fact the tires are completely shot. They hold air but
are not safe to drive on! They are on 17” Torque Thrust Wheels and are
255-45-17 BFG’s. The brakes will most
likely need work soon also. There is a small antifreeze leak where the water
pump rests against the intake manifold. I believe this is typical on I still have most of
the receipts for most of these parts as well as many others I haven’t listed. I
also have an extensive photo history which I will put onto a CD and include. I
still have the original owners manual and protection plan booklet with the
Protect-O-Plate. I have never completed
the exterior because of my hopes to create a 2 door wagon. It has some rust
issues and has light damage from being backed into as you can see in the
pictures, but has had no serious damage from any accidents. By the way, it is a
better looking car than most all the GTO’s out there and way more rare! |

Junkyard Gem: 1964 Pontiac Catalina Custom Ventura
Mon, May 22 2023Like Impala, Skylark, Malibu and Silverado (among many others), the Ventura name began its career as the designation for a trim level or option package used on another GM model, then became a model name in its own right. Initially a designation for a snazzed-up Pontiac Catalina two- or four-door hardtop, the Ventura name moved over to a Pontiac-ized version of the Chevy Nova for 1971. Today's Junkyard Gem, found in a Northern California car graveyard, proudly bears both Catalina and Ventura badging. Actually, the Catalina name itself started out as a trim level for the Chieftain and Star Chief models of the 1950s, just to confuse everybody. By the time this car was built, the Catalina was the cheapest of four Pontiac models built on the same full-size B-Body platform as the big Chevrolets and Olds 88s of the time (the Star Chief, Bonneville and Grand Prix ranked above it on the 1964 Pontiac Prestige-O-Meter). The 1964 Catalina four-door hardtop with the Custom Ventura package offered a lot of swank per dollar, with a price starting at $3,063. That's about $29,821 when converted to inflated 2023 dollars. The main benefit of the Custom Ventura package was an interior done up entirely in Morrokide upholstery. Morrokide was the name GM applied to Naugahyde fake leather when used in Pontiac vehicles; when used in Buicks, it was known as Cordaveen, while Oldsmobile Naugahyde was called Morocceen. Naugahyde took its name from the town of Naugatuck, Connecticut, where it was invented. This car's Morrokide is in rough shape. In fact, everything about this car is decayed and probably infectious. You know to be careful when a junkyard car has warnings about rat feces inked on the glass. That said, I couldn't resist examining the 8-track tapes that littered the interior. Here's The Best of Carly Simon, from 1975. The tapes were played on this Sparkomatic player, which probably lived in the glovebox or under the seat. The factory radio was AM-only, and includes the frequency markings for the atomic-attack CONELRAD emergency frequencies. 1964 was the last year for mandatory CONELRAD radios in the United States.
GM recalling 1.4 million older vehicles for oil leak fire risk
Tue, Oct 27 2015General Motors is recalling 1,411,332 older vehicles with its 3.8-liter V6 yet again due to a fire risk. Specifically, there are 1,283,340 of them in the US, and the affected models are the: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 1997- 2004 Buick Regal The fault with these vehicles is that oil can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold during hard braking, which can potentially cause of fire. In the last six years, there have 19 reported minor injuries from this problem but no crashes or fatalities, according to the company. Spokesperson Alan Adler also told Autoblog: "GM has reports of 1,345 fires in vehicles that were repaired under two previous recalls for this issue." At this time, GM is still developing a remedy for the problem. According to Adler, the company advised owners to park these vehicles outside for the previous recalls. "The cars can be safely driven. In cases where a customer reported an engine fire while driving, smoke was reported, which would be an indication of a malfunction," he said. This is GM's fourth recall for this problem since 2008, according to The Detroit News. At one point it was believed that aging valve cover gaskets allowed the oil to leak out and drip onto the manifold. A campaign in 2009 covered nearly 1.5 million of these models through the 2003 model year for the same issue. At the time, dealers installed new spark plug wire retainers as a fix. Woman Cleared In Fatal Car Wreck After GM Letter
Tue, Nov 25 2014A Texas judge cleared a woman Monday for a car accident that killed her fiance in 2004, after General Motors acknowledged that her car would have been among millions being recalled for a problem that may have contributed to the death. Candice Anderson was driving a 2004 Saturn Ion when it suddenly veered off a road about 60 miles east of Dallas and slammed into a tree. Anderson, then 21, was severely injured when the car's air bags failed to deploy. Her 25-year-old fiance, Gene Erikson, who was a passenger, was killed. She later pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the wreck. But during a hearing Monday, State District Judge Teresa Drum expunged the conviction from her record, according to officials in the Van Zandt County court andAnderson's attorney, Bob Hilliard. In a letter given to the court ahead of the hearing, an attorney for the automaker confirmed that Anderson's Saturn would have been among 2.6 million GM vehicles recalled in February to address ignition switches that can slip out of the "run" position, causing the engines to stall and disabling power steering, brakes and air bags. Anderson's crash "is one in which the recall condition may have caused or contributed to the frontal air bag non-deployment in the accident," attorney Richard C. Godfrey wrote. Hilliard provided a copy of the letter to The Associated Press, and Godfrey confirmed its contents Monday. Anderson was initially charged with criminally negligent homicide because there was no clear explanation at the time why the wreck occurred, according to court documents from the case. She pleaded guilty to a letter charge in 2006, and was sentenced to five years' probation. She also was ordered to perform 260 hours of community service, pay court costs and cover the costs of Erikson's funeral. "GM knew this defect caused this death, yet instead of telling the truth watched silently as Candice was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter," Hilliard said Monday. "It took 10 years for GM to find its voice." In a separate statement issued by the company, GM said it "cooperated fully by providing technical information that was requested to make a decision in this matter." The carmaker also said the issue in Anderson's case was for local law enforcement and courts to consider. "That's why we took a neutral position on Ms. Anderson's case," the company's statement said.
